Not up to DAP to decide who’s next PM, says Dr Mahathir

PPBM chairman says he will meet with his party president Muhyiddin Yassin soon to ascertain what was discussed with PAS on seat negotiations for next general election.

(FMT) – Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said that the opposition will collectively decide on who becomes the next prime minister should they wrest Putrajaya from Barisan Nasional, adding that the decision didn’t lie with DAP alone.

“Other parties have a right to voice out their choice too if they feel an individual is suited for the post.

“We are not rejecting their decision, but it is not the decision of one party,” the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman told reporters in a press conference held at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here today.

He was asked to respond to DAP MP Anthony Loke’s statement that PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would be named as prime minister should the opposition coalition win the next general election (GE14).

Wan Azizah is also the leader of Pakatan Harapan, a coalition comprising PKR, DAP and Amanah.

While PPBM is not part of PH, the newly-formed party has signed an electoral pact to ensure straight fights against BN in GE14.

Last year, the former prime minister said that PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin would be prime minister if the opposition won the next general election, but added that the party and the opposition coalition would have the final say.

In January, Mahathir also said he would not consider returning as PM if the opposition won, despite a survey published by Institut Darul Ehsan (IDE) revealing that he was the most preferred candidate for the nation’s top post among Malay voters.

Meanwhile, Mahathir said he would meet with Muhyiddin to get a clearer picture of the apparent negotiations on seat allocations between PPBM and PAS.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin revealed that there were ongoing negotiations between the two parties.

“I only read this in the paper and I don’t know what PAS has voiced out. I will meet with Muhyiddin to see what PAS really meant.”

On a separate matter, Mahathir said he was worried that over four million youths were not registered as voters as recently revealed by the Election Commission.

The youths, he said, must realise the importance of voting or else they risked having a bad government in place.

“If only they knew the importance of voting, they would go to the polls,” he said at a forum earlier today.
