Muhyiddin, Mahathir not in sync over PAS cooperation

Speaking at same event, both Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia leaders send out conflicting messages.

(FMT) – The top two founding leaders of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) contradicted each other on the same stage, over the issue of cooperation with PAS.

At a PPBM event here last night, party president Muhyiddin Yassin continued to emphasise the importance of working with PAS.

He said if leaders from both parties, along with Pakatan Harapan, can set aside their differences, then the opposition has a good chance of winning the next general election (GE14).

“We (PPBM) have negotiated with PAS, to determine if all parties can set aside their differences and create a new form of cooperation, where everything can be agreed upon based on discussions and solidarity.

“(And) to prioritise the people’s interests above all else,” Muhyiddin said.

But the PPBM chairman, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, sang a different tune as he called for unity among just four parties, which was believed to be in reference to PPBM, PKR, DAP, and Amanah.

These four parties have agreed to work together in their shared goal of defeating Barisan Nasional (BN). This alliance was also formalised through a memorandum of understanding signed last December by PPBM and Pakatan Harapan.

“Although we only have four parties, if we merge and focus on just one goal, then I believe we will be able to compete with BN,” Mahathir said in his speech.

“A coalition of parties that does not fight together will be weak. They must realise that in order to defeat a strong coalition such as BN, we have to become one party.”

Mahathir had last year, repeatedly called for all opposition parties to unite and fight against BN under one banner. According to the 91-year-old, anything other than a straight fight would only benefit BN.

But after repeated snubs from PAS, whose president Abdul Hadi Awang insisted would never again work with DAP and Amanah, Mahathir had resorted to labelling the party as a friend of BN.
