Azmin hails Mahathir’s new direction
PKR deputy president urges opposition parties to return to seat negotiations
(FMT) – Opposition parties have been urged to return to seat negotiations in preparation for the coming by-elections in Perak and Selangor.
PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali welcomed the “new direction” of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had called for opposition unity to defeat Barisan Nasional.
Dr Mahathir was Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman for two decades in power as prime minister.
He called for a straight contest between the combined opposition and the BN in the by-elections on June 18.
In response, Mohamed Azmin said: “This is a new direction revealed by Mahathir, and this has inspired our spirit to learn from our mistakes in Sarawak. All parties must therefore return to the negotiating table to ensure the aspirations of the rakyat can be fulfilled.”
He said Pakatan Harapan had not decided yet which of the three parties would contest in the two seats.
“What is important is the principle that we uphold and which Mahathir has also shown support for tonight, that the by-elections should be a one to one contest and we must take down BN in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar,” he was quoted as saying.
