Amanah Youth leader arrested for sedition

Shazni-Munir-Mohd-Ithnin

(The Sun Daily) – Amanah Youth deputy leader Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin was arrested under the Sedition Act today for allegedly suggesting that massive street demonstrations was the most effective option of overthrowing the government.

The 29-year-old political activist had showed up at the Dang Wangi police headquarters at 3pm with his lawyer Lim Lip Eng after being summoned by police.

However, before he was quizzed, a federal police team from a special investigations division turned up before arresting and taking him away.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had ordered an investigation on Shazni after coming across the news report.

Lim, who is also Segambut MP said his client had spoken to a webnews portal on post-GST issues and the hardship faced by the masses.

However, he alleged that another news website had fetched the report, re-written and manipulated it before publishing it in its portal.

He said this led to his client’s comments were taken out of context by the portal.

Lim said Shazni had also lodged a police report against the news website after his arrest today.

He said his Shazni is being investigated for acts detrimental to parliamentary democracy and sedition under the Penal Code and Sedition Act.

Federal police CID director Commissioner Datuk Mohmad Salleh said Shazni is being held at the Jinjang police station for investigations and a remand order will be sought on Tuesday to detain him further.
