Mahathir’s Anti-Najib Campaign is showing signs of falling apart

(Malaysian Digest) – Since stepping into the political limelight with his portfolio in the Defence Ministry until he ascended the leadership of UMNO and became the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has weathered my challenges and attempts to ambush him politically, the biggest impact being that of the scandal surrounding the death of Mongolian national, Altantuya Shaariibuu.

The high-profile case is once again being dredged up in international media after Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was interviewed in ABC’s Four Corners programme where he purportedly revealed damaging confessions in relation to Sirul Azhar Umar who had received the death sentence for his role in Altantuya’s murder.

“The media reports say that Sirul was Najib Tun Razak’s bodyguard. The Special Branch, on the other hand, has investigated Sirul’s alleged links with Najib and came out with a report that clears Najib of any involvement in Altantuya’s murder. However, because the Special Branch officers involved are supporting the ANC (Anti-Najib Campaign), they refuse to make public this report.

“Maybe the Home Ministry would be able to get to the bottom of the Mahathir-Sirul relationship, which may result in Mahathir getting charged for aiding and abetting a convicted murderer to escape to Australia,” Raja Petra Kamaruddin also popularly known as RPK wrote in malaysiatoday.net, explaining Sirul was also the bodyguard of Mahathir and later served with Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

RPK highlighted that the uneasy alliance between former foes is showing signs of disintegrating as their combined efforts which was aimed at toppling the prime minister is not bearing any result.

Now Mahathir’s former nemesis, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has had a change of heart in expressing his support for Mahathir and Kit Siang’s ‘Save Malaysia’ campaign.

“Anwar was hoping that the Save Malaysia campaign would include his pardon and release from jail. However, now that Anwar knows that Mahathir does not want to make that as part of the Save Malaysia agenda, Anwar no longer wants anything to do with it,” RPK observed.

Even Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Ku Li) who had been on Mahathir’s side previously has decided to end his cooperation with the former Prime Minister.

“Ku Li tried to get around 30 Barisan Nasional Members of Parliament to combine with the opposition Members of Parliament to vote Najib out of office. However, they failed to get the required 112 votes and instead Lim Kit Siang was suspended from Parliament for six months.

“This is the second time this vote of no confidence exercise has failed. The first time was in September 2008. At that time they were trying to oust Abdullah and Ku Li was supposed to deliver 30 Barisan Nasional Members of Parliament to support the opposition’s planned vote of no confidence,” he added.

The blogger who is based in the UK said that various meetings were held between Ku Li and Anwar after Abdullah resigned as prime minister and they had an unspoken agreement to appoint Ku Li as the Prime Minister for one term prior to handing over the post to Anwar.

“However, the 2015 plan was a bit more complicated because it involved Mukhriz becoming the Deputy Prime Minister and then in 2020 he would take over as Prime Minister. Anwar now realises that the new plan does not include him and that he would need to remain in jail until 2020 and he would not be able to return to politics until 2025 when he is almost 80 years old.

“In fact, the new plan would not include Ku Li as well because there is no way Mahathir can agree to Ku Li taking over as the interim Prime Minister. If Ku Li takes over he will make sure that his people and not Mukhriz takes over as Prime Minister in 2020.

“There is also talk that once Ku Li takes over as Prime Minister he is going to bongkar all Mahathir’s wrongdoings and make him pay for his transgressions which he committed in his 22 years as Prime Minister. The fact that Ku Li’s people are going round boasting that Mahathir is going to jail once Ku Li takes over more or less blew Ku Li’s chances of taking over,” he explained.
