Guan Eng: Tough but necessary to work with Dr Mahathir
(The Star) – Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pic) says it is difficult but necessary to work with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The former premier along with some 50 politicians and activists from both sides of the political divide had signed a “Save Malaysia” declaration to oust Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as Prime Minister.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament here Monday, Lim said it was necessary for everyone to put aside personal problems for the sake of the national narrative.
“I think we agree on ‘Save Malaysia’. If you want to talk about our personal feelings, our personal sufferings, then I think that narrative will never begin.
“So are we bigger than our country? I think that’s the question we must ask. If we feel we are bigger than our country, then nothing will happen,” Lim said.
He said the people must discuss Malaysia’s future and the way forward.
“If you stick to the status quo, the ringgit and the Government Services Tax (GST) will continue to cause suffering to many people.
“So ‘Save Malaysia’ needs to be considered seriously,” Lim said.
Asked if there was some form of trust between the signatories to the declaration, Lim said it was not about trust.
“We talk about this narrative first before we talk about trust.
“We start on this basis first. Trust takes time to build. We are not going to say there are no problems,” he added.
