Kevin Morais’ murder trial begins April 4

(Bernama) – The High Court here today fixed 16 days from April 4 to hear the case of seven men, including a doctor, charged with murdering and abetting in the murder of Deputy Public Prosecutor Anthony Kevin Morais, whose body was found in a cemented drum in September last year.

Judge Azman Abdullah set the date when the case came up for mention.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Razak Musa, who prosecuted, informed the court that the prosecution had submitted 79 types of documents, including 700 photographs, on the case to the defence.

“We will hold a pre-trial discussion on exhibits to be produced in court and witnesses to be called. So far, the prosecution has 60 witnesses.”

Abdul Razak also informed the court that another accused in the case, A. Murugan, had been sentenced to two years’ jail by the Shah Alam High Court for abetting in Kevin’s murder.

Murugan, a mechanic, had pleaded guilty to a charge of abetting six men in Kevin’s murder by disposing of Kevin’s car and its chassis number at his workshop.

Last Jan 27, the six men, namely G Gunasekaran, 43, R Dinishwaran, 23, A Thinesh Kumar, 22, M Vishwanath, 25, S Nimalan, 22, and S Ravichandaran, 34, had pleaded not guilty to a charge of murdering Kevin, 55.

They were charged with committing the offence between 7am and 8pm on Sept 4, 2015, while Kevin was on his way from Jalan Dutamas Raya Sentul to No. 1 Jalan USJ1/6D, Subang Jaya.

They face the mandatory death penalty if convicted under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The doctor, pathologist Colonel Dr R Kunaseegaran, 52, had pleaded not guilty to abetting with the six men in the murder of Kevin at the same place, date and time.

He was charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 302 of the same act.

Lawyer V Rajehgopal represented Gunasekaran, Vishwanath, Nimalan and Ravichandaran, while lawyer M Manoharan represented Dinishwaran and Thinesh Kumar. Kunaseegaran were represented by lawyer N Sivananthan.

Meanwhile, lawyer Simon Sabapathy is holding a watching brief for the deceased’s youngest sibling, Richard Dilaan Morais, who was also in the court today.

Kevin’s remains were found in a cemented drum at Persiaran Subang Mewah, Subang Jaya, near here on Sept 16 last year.

Kevin was reported missing on Sept 4. He was last seen leaving his apartment at Menara Duta here for Putrajaya in a Proton Perdana car bearing registration number WA6264Q.
