(The Malaysian Insider) – After challenging Attorney-General (A-G) Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali to swear on the Quran, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he is willing to do the same over his criticism of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s involvement in alleged financial scandals.

The retired statesman said he would swear on the Quran if anyone felt that his claims against Najib were lies or slander.

“If what I say is considered slander or untrue, then ask me to take an oath. I will do it.

“If I ask others to swear, I myself must be ready to do it, with the right intentions,” Dr Mahathir said at a press conference today after launching a campaign to read the Quran in Kuala Lumpur.

The former prime minister recently slammed Apandi for his decision not to press charges against Najib over the RM2.6 billion donation and SRC International Sdn Bhd.

He wrote in his blog that Apandi had “no credibility” in his decisions to take no further action against Najib.

Apandi had also last year made a similar decision over Bank Negara’s findings on certain overseas transactions by Najib’s brainchild, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Dr Mahathir is now facing investigations for criminal defamation for his remarks against the A-G.

In another blog post, Dr Mahathir also challenged Apandi to swear on the Quran and accused him of “hiding” the truth when the attorney-general suggested amending the law to impose life imprisonment for leaking government secrets.

“As a good Muslim he should swear on the Quran in a mosque witnessed by mosque officials and the public that the reports did not implicate Najib in any way.

“He should not try to cheat by vowing in his heart something else, and swearing aloud something else,” Dr Mahathir said.
