We are not hiding anything, says MACC director

The commission is bound by law to not reveal details on ongoing cases

(Free Malaysia Today) – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) faces its biggest challenge when dealing with matters pertaining to their investigations that cannot be made public.

The commission’s Strategic Communications Director Rohaizad Yaacob said this gives the public the impression that they (MACC) are hiding something.

“Here lies the problem. We are not hiding anything. It’s just the law that prohibits us from revealing something at that point of time.

“But when everything becomes public after an offender is charged in court, we can reveal everything. Even then, some people will say it is too late (for us to reveal details),” Rohaizad said in an interview with the commission’s radio station MACC.FM today.

Rohaizad then questioned what the people really wanted.

“Do we want to punish an individual before he is found guilty? Or do we want to pursue the truth?

“Fighting graft is actually quite easy, we want to prevent corruption, and not find fault with people. We also want to prevent abuse of power,” he said.

Rohaizad pledged his department would channel all possible information to the public so that they would know that the commission is doing its job in line with the law.
