Arrest Dr M over WSJ claim, former deputy minister dares IGP
(Malay Mail Online) – Police should arrest Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Datuk Seri Najib Razak has named the former prime minister as the mastermind behind a Wall Street Journal report accusing him of corruption, said a former deputy minister.
In a post on Twitter today, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah challenged Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to detain the former prime minister over the report that Najib has categorised as false and political sabotage.
“PM kt Tun M dalangnya. Apalagi, @KBAB51 , tangkaplah. Go PDRM go [PM said Tun Mahathir is the mastermind. What more, @KBAB51, arrest him. Go PDRM go]” he wrote; @KBAB51 is Khalid’s Twitter handle.
In a report on Friday, the WSJ, citing documents from Malaysian investigators currently scrutinising the troubled 1MDB’s financials, claimed that the money trail shows that some US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) were moved between government agencies, banks and companies before it ended up in Najib’s accounts.
These documents, the international business paper claimed, include bank transfer forms and flowcharts put together by investigators to shed light on 1MDB’s cash flow.
The paper said this is the first time a direct connection to Najib has been established in the probe on 1MDB.
Later the same day, Najib said the allegation against him was just another in the series of claims made by Dr Mahathir in his campaign to oust the prime minister
“The latest allegation is that I have taken state-linked funds for personal gain. I believe Tun, working hand in glove with foreign nationals, including the now discredited political attack blog Sarawak Report, is behind this latest lie,” Najib wrote on Facebook then.
Yesterday, an aide said the prime minister will take legal action against the WSJ tomorrow.
