Activist demands criminal action against Mahathir
Police report lodged against former PM for spreading lies and being a threat to public order
(Free Malaysia Today) – A social activist has lodged a police report accusing former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad of spreading lies and being a threat to public law and order.
Noor Hasni Saad, president of Persatuan Pembela Insan Malaysia, made the report at 10am at Jalan Patani station.
He said Mahathir’s incorrect public statements in the past few months had confused the people and caused panic among foreign investors as well. “We urged the police to promptly investigate Dr Mahathir for endangering public peace, law and order,” he told newsmen later.
His report is the first to urge criminal action against Dr Mahathir of spreading lies against the Najib Razak government and attempting to create political unrest. More similar reports are now expected to be lodged in coming weeks.
Last night, Najib had said Dr Mahathir was working hand in glove with foreign nationals to topple him. “These gutter tactics – in some cases criminal tactics – to overthrow the government will fail. Where appropriate, they will be met with the full force of the law,” he said in a late-night statement.
Hasni, 48, said Mahathir had disrupted a conducive investment climate in Malaysia by disseminating false information in his relentless attacks on the government investment arm, 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
“His statements based on falsehoods have caused public anxiety, confusion and panic, especially among local business community and, existing and imminent foreign investors. It’s a threat to law and order,” he said. He had submitted copies of several Mahathir statements published in the media and some blogs.
