Najib, Dr M can appear on telly at PAC hearing on 1MDB, says ex-minister
(The Malaysian Insider) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should both appear before a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) which can be telecast live, Global Movement of Moderates Foundation chief executive officer Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said today.
Saifuddin said the PAC hearing would be the best way to answer questions surrounding 1MDB, adding that security could be tightened at the venue.
“PAC can call anyone. Even Dr Mahathir and Najib can appear before them, and this can be televised live because the public want answers,” he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Yesterday, Najib did not show up at a forum on the state-owned investment arm and the cancellation was said to be on the advice of police over a security threat.
1MDB is currently sitting on a RM42 billion debt and Najib is its advisory board chairman.
Saifuddin said the events yesterday were proof that people wanted answers on the 1MDB controversy, but there should not be a confrontational approach to the end.
“The way forward is not a confrontational argument, an argument like that is not going to give the people answers that they want.
“What we should do is empower what is already in place.”
He said that organising a PAC hearing would be a better avenue as the committee has a “decorum of its own.”
