Dr M says he has lost faith in people, won’t endorse next PM
(The Malaysian Insider) – Days after calling for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s resignation, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today refused to endorse any successor for the prime minister’s post, saying he had lost faith in people as they would “misbehave” once appointed to power.
The former prime minister said that while it was party convention for the Umno deputy president to take over the top post, he refused to comment on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s capability to take up the mantle as he was already disillusioned.
“That (who should be the prime minister) is for the party to decide. See, of course, there are people who are quite qualified. If we go according to the party constitution, the person who is the most eligible would be the deputy,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference in Cyberjaya today.
But when asked his thoughts on Muhyiddin becoming prime minister, Dr Mahathir said, “No, I have lost faith in people. Before they get appointed, they are the cleanest people in the world but then when they get some authority, they misbehave themselves, so I don’t know.”
