Abu Backer claims trial to uttering offensive words
(The Rakyat Post) – Former Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohamad Zan, claimed trial at the Sessions Court for uttering insulting and provoking words to a Tamil daily reporter on May 12.
Abu Backer, 46, who is a lawyer by profession was represented by counsel Rosli Ismail.
He is being charged under Section 504 for causing intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
Upon conviction, he is liable to jail not exceeding two years, fine or both.
According to charge sheet Abu Backer, was said to have uttered the words,“India p*****, Melayu b****** dan Cina … saya pernah dengar perkataan Cina apa tapi sudah lupa,” at 10.20am on the Bukit Gelugor by-election nomination day to evoke the anger of D. Alappah at the porch of Dewan Sri Pinang.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Razali Che Hassan, who is also state prosecution unit chief, prosecuted the case. He was assisted by Siti Fatimah Talib.
Razali had proposed a bail of RM5,000 with a surety, while Rosli pleaded for it to be reduced on the grounds that this was Abu Backer’s first offence and that he had cooperated with the police.
Sessions Court Judge Zulhasmi Abdullah set bail at RM2,000 with a surety and fixed Oct 16 for case mention.
