DAP asks EC to explain Teluk Intan vote discrepancy
(TMI) – DAP is seeking an explanation for the discrepancy in the total number of votes in the May 31 Teluk Intan by-election which it narrowly lost to Barisan Nasional.
Secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (pic) had written to Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof to seek an explanation after there were discrepancies between the total number of votes after the close of voting and the final number of votes after the results were announced.
Party strategist Dr Ong Kian Ming revealed that at 5.30pm that day, the EC had announced the total turnout was 39,850 and together with the 392 early votes, the total number of votes would be 40,242.
However, when the final results were announced, the total number of votes was 40,619, with BN obtaining 20,157 votes, DAP getting 19,919 votes and 543 spoilt votes.
As such, he pointed out that there was a discrepancy of 377 votes, more than the 238-vote majority garnered by BN’s Datuk Mah Siew Keong.
“We are waiting for the EC’s reply before further discussions with the party’s lawyers. Our lawyers have advised us not to say anything until we get an official reply from the Election Commission.
