PUTRAJAYA, Aug 2 — Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today it is up to the prime minister to decide whether members of his administration must declare their assets publicly.

“Currently we declare our assets to the prime minister,” Muhyiddin told reporters here.

“It is up to the prime minister, whether there is a need for the new move it has to be studied, but it is for the prime minister to decide,” he said.

“According to the present regulation, we make [the] declaration to the prime minister. It is up to him if it needs to forwarded to MACC,” he added.

Last weekend, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed supported the move for Cabinet members to make public their asset declarations.

Currently, Cabinet members disclose their wealth to Datuk Seri Najib Razak annually but it is not made public.

The nation’s top graft fighter was responding to a suggestion from former Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan that the assets of politicians — particularly those in the Cabinet — and the judiciary be made publicly available for the sake of transparency.
