Sodomy II – why you should care

If our judiciary cannot rise above politics and be the beacon of truth and justice for ordinary Malaysians, then the seeds for future anarchy are being laid, one case at a time.

In another couple of hours, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, defacto leader of PKR and parliamentary leader of the opposition, will be facing his second trial on another charge of sodomy. As I write this post, I wonder how DSAI is feeling right now, and how I would feel if I were in his shoes. Well I do not know how DSAI is feeling but I do know how I feel.

I feel that things must be really bad in Malaysia when I and most of the people I know do not have faith in our judiciary to be fair and impartial. And it is this judiciary, which is the last refuge for ordinary Malaysian citizens to seek protection from others from within civil society and institutions controlled by the executive branch of government, that through its fairness and impartiality can guarantee a Malaysian society and country that works along the lines of democratic principles on which this country was founded upon.

Frankly I fear for DSAI but more importantly, I fear for Malaysia and ordinary citizens like myself who call Malaysia home!

If our judiciary cannot rise above politics and be the beacon of truth and justice for ordinary Malaysians, then the seeds for future anarchy are being laid, one case at a time. There will come a time when ordinary Malaysians lose faith completely in our judicial system and take matters into their own hands and disregard laws that are meant to protect civil society and us within.

Already we are seeing too much of that frequently for my liking and I believe, the liking of many fair-minded and law-abiding ordinary Malaysian citizens.

Over the course of the next few weeks and months, I’m sure the government controlled MSM will portray this trial as nothing political but merely the rule of law taking its course.

This cannot be further from the truth! This case is not about the rule of law but about DSAI and politics! About power and keeping it by all means. By snuffing out all opposition to our political elites, even if it means subverting the very highest institution in a democracy – the judiciary!
