Nik Aziz should step down, says Dr M
(The Edge) – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged PAS spiritual leader Datuk Seri Nik Abdul Aziz to step down.
“It’s about time (Nik Aziz) goes. Like me, after some time, you get old and senile,” he said, drawing laughter from a press conference after the opening of the National Asset and Facility Management (NAFAM) 2009.
“I believe that a leader should not stay for too long, otherwise people will call you kolot (outdated),” he said, adding that “fortunately, I left in time”.
The Umno veteran was commenting on the current crisis in PAS that has seen Nik Aziz calling for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to remove “problematic” leaders from the party.
The party’s central working committee has since called for a special meeting at 8.30pm Wednesday to discuss Nik Aziz’s call for an EGM which may not take place depending on the outcome of the meeting.
