Tian Chua: Azmin within his rights

(NST) PETALING JAYA: In his capacity as a state assemblyman, Azmin Ali has the right to call for a reshuffle of the Selangor executive council, Parti Keadilan Rakyat member of parliament Tian Chua said yesterday.

Azmin is making the statement as a backbencher. It is the responsibility of a backbencher to highlight issues of concern and urge improvements. This is part of the democratic process. One cannot expect only praises just because you come from the same party."

He said it was a common thing to highlight such issues and the people should not read too much into it.

"I cannot comment much since I am not from Selangor or an assemblyman there. However, whatever an assemblyman says represent the views of the constituents."

Tian Chua said this when he was asked to comment on Azmin's statement last week that there was a need for a reshuffle in the Selangor executive council.

Azmin, who is the assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa, urged Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to reassess the performance of his council members.

He claimed that he had received many complaints not only from the grassroots but also from the business community over the manner in which the Pakatan Rakyat government was administering Selangor.

Azmin cited shoddy road maintenance, falling standards in the city's cleanliness, dissatisfaction over the appointment of local councillors and the sluggish state of the local economy to support his call.

On Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's 100th day in office, Tian Chua said the premier started with a disadvantage and had to turn the tide and prove his leadership capability within a short period of assuming office.

"Najib had resorted to popular measures in order to win the support of the people. We will give him more time to prove his sincerity in his administration and his willingness to carry out changes."

Tian Chua said the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor PKR would organise a forum entitled "Najib's 100 days — what went wrong" at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre at 8pm on July 31. The speakers would include Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.
