In the year 638, after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Umar, the second Caliph, led an army to conquer Jerusalem. The Christian leaders of Jerusalem invited Umar into the Church of Holy Sepulcher so that he could fulfil his prayers. Umar, however, refused to do so out of respect for the Christians. Instead, he chose to pray outside the church.

First, see the video below from minute 6:23.
At minute 6:23 in that video, the Member of Parliament for Kulim Bandar Baru, Zulkifli Noordin, said that the Caliph Umar refused to enter a church when invited to do so. This is proof, he said, that Muslims should not enter a church.
He does not care about the law, argued Zul. Malaysian law may not have made it illegal or haram for Muslims to enter a church. But he is not concerned with that. He is guided by the example (sunah) of the Prophet’s Comrades (Sahabat Nabi) and Caliph Umar, one of the Prophet’s Comrades, refused to enter a church. This is all that matters.
Zul did not offer any details on this incident he quoted. He did not clarify when and where this incident was supposed to have happened. Either he is not clear about the incident or he is intentionally trying to mislead his audience.
Well, in that case, since Zul is either not too clear about the incident or refuses to clarify his statement with intent to mislead his audience, let me help with the clarification.
Umar’s main concern was that, if he entered the church to pray, future generations of Muslims might misinterpret his action as he had ‘acquired’ or ‘captured’ the church and had turned it into a mosque. That was why he chose to pray outside the church rather than in the church. This was to safeguard the church and not trigger a precedence where churches are taken by force and turned into mosques.
That was the real reason why Umar refused to enter the Church of Holy Sepulcher to pray. He intentionally prayed outside the church to avoid any misunderstanding and conflict. He wanted to demonstrate that even though the Muslims had conquered Jerusalem, they did not disturb any churches or took these churches by force. Churches would remain churches and Muslims would have to build their own mosques if they wanted to pray.
I don’t wear a songkok or white skullcap like Zul. But I know my history. And that was the history of what happened when Umar conquered Jerusalem. And that was the real reason why Umar declined the invitation to enter the church to pray. It was to avoid any misunderstanding and conflict, and not as Zul is tying to mislead us.

1.To develop and strengthen our powers of self-control, so that we can resist wrongful desires and bad habits, and therefore “guard against evil” (extract no. 1). In fasting, by refraining from the natural human urges to satisfy one’s appetite, we are exercising our ability of self-restraint, so that we can then apply it to our everyday life to bring about self-improvement.
2.To attain nearness and closeness to God so that He becomes a reality in our lives. As we bear the rigours of fasting purely for the sake of following a Divine commandment, knowing and feeling that He can see all our actions however secret, it intensifies the consciousness of God in our hearts, resulting in a higher spiritual experience (see extract no. 2).
3.To learn to refrain from usurping other’s rights and belongings. In fasting we voluntarily give up even what is rightfully ours; how can then we think of taking what is not ours but belongs to someone else? (See extract no. 3)
4.Charity and generosity is especially urged during Ramadan. We learn to give, and not to take. The deprivation of fasting makes us sympathise with the suffering of others, and desirous of alleviating it; and it makes us remember the blessings of life which we normally take for granted.
Fasting in Islam does not just consist of refraining from eating and drinking, but from every kind of selfish desire and wrong-doing. The fast is not merely of the body, but essentially that of the spirit as well (see extract no. 4). The physical fast is a symbol and outward expression of the real, inner fast.
Fasting is a spiritual practice to be found in all religions (see extracts no. 1 and 5). The great Founders of various faiths (Buddha, Moses, Jesus, etc.) practiced quite rigorous fasting as a preliminary to attaining their first experience of spiritual enlightenment and communion with God. This kind of communion is indicated in extract no. 2.
I got this from some research on the web. If this is true, then the schools in Malaysia that are disallowing non Muslims to eat in front of those that are fasting is not letting the Muslims fulfill their purpose of fasting?

Coming to Zul, this is the worst type of munafik who blatantly quotes wrongly on an Islamic precedent to justify his arguments.
In one of the clips, Zul also insisted that JAIS hadk already issued a report on the raid, when JAIS had not done so.c

This, to Muslims, is the third holiest site in the world. For Jews, it is the exact Site where anciently two successive Jewish Temples stood, over a period of some 1000 years preceding the Common Era - First, the Temple of Solomon, a masterpiece of ancient architecture until its destruction at the time of the Babilonian Exile, six centuries BCE. Second, the Temple of Herod, where Jesus, the contending Jewish Messiah, attended Jewish worship Services. It also is the Site where, according to the Bible, the future Third Temple of the Jews are to be erected and where God will appear in Great Power at the time of the War of Armageddon.
And that is what makes this Temple Mount Site, which is pivotal to the opposing interests of the world's three major religions, the real flash point in "The Battle for Jerusalem.
Another account :-
In the 10th century BC, after King David captured the city of Jerusalem and made it the capital of the Israelites, he chose this high place as the site of a great temple to house the Ark of the Covenant (2 Samuel 24:18-25). Prior to this, the Ark had moved among several sanctuaries, especially those of Shechem and Shiloh. The construction project was undertaken by David's son, King Solomon, and completed in 957 BC.
In 614, Persian forces invaded Jerusalem, slaughtering the inhabitants and destroying the churches. Thus, Islamic historians record that when the Muslims captured the city in 638, Caliph Umar I found the Temple Mount completely destroyed and began immediately to repair it. In 688-91 the fifth Umayyad caliph ?Abd al-Malik ibn Marw?n built the Dome of the Rock on the restored platform.
The Temple Mount in Jerusalem (specifically the Al-Aqsa Mosque) is regarded by Muslims as the third holiest site outside the cities of Mecca and Medina. The main reasons are these:

When I was in Spain, I visited a city in the south call Cordoba. Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years and they built mosques in many parts of the country. The center of the Muslim civilization was Al Hambra (readers may want to read Washington Irving's, Tales of the AlHambra to see a glimpse of the civilization). Cordoba is another city that have a lasting impact in terms of architectural and cultural of the Muslim civilization in Spain.
In the center of Cordoba, one of the tourist attraction is the "Masqueta" or mosque. After Spain was retaken by the Christians the building was turned into a church but you can still see all the trappings of a mosque inside the building which includes the prayer hall and the Imam podium and some verses of the Koran on the walls. Currently, it is just a tourist attraction and not much of a place of worship of either faith.
But a local Spanish friend of mine told me something very interesting. Before the building became a tourist landmark, local Muslims and Christians prayed at different parts inside the building but within the same roof. I do not know how far this is true, but that was what he told me.
Another interesting thing happened while I was on a bus touring the city. The bus is similar as our Rapid bus where you have to put coins, i.e. the right fare in an electronic money box. No conductor only driver. See. . ., I was sitting behind the driver of this bus. The bus make a stop somewhere near the market area and a blond elderly woman boarded the bus. When he was about to drop the coin in the bus, she said "asslamualikum". The bus driver nonchalantly replied "muailkumsalam"! I was surprised as I knew the blond elderly woman and the driver are not Muslims. You may ask how do I know? Well, in Spain the Muslim minority especially elderly woman wears head scraf (tudung). This blond elderly woman do not wear head scarf. I related this incident to my Spanish friend, he says it is normal for people in that city regardless of Christians or Muslims to greet each other with "assalamualaikum". It is just a culture thing and not religion.
Imagine, first it was about the Muslims and Christians praying in the same building. Then, about non-Muslims greeting like a Muslim which I think if done in Malaysia by the non-Muslims would have people like Zul Nordin, Ezam and Ibrahim Ali foaming in their mouths calling for jihad that non-Muslims should not greet "assalmualikum" to other non-Muslims.
Bolehland sure have religious tolerance and acceptance issues!

That's when they pollute their faith with a mixture of politics to champion their own personal agenda in the name of the religion.
These people are plenty in Malaysia as you can find salted fish in the wet market.

Upon Umar's arrival in Jerusalem, a pact known as The Umariyya Covenant was drawn up. It surrendered the city and gave guarantees of civil and religious liberty to Christians in exchange for jizya. It was signed by caliph Umar on behalf of the Muslims, and witnessed by Khalid, Amr, Abdur Rahman bin Awf and Muawiyah. In late April 637, Jerusalem was officially surrendered to the caliph.[18]
Umar allowed Jews to live in Jerusalem. It was first time, after almost 500 years of oppressive rule of the Romans, that Jews were allowed to enter and worship freely in their holy city.[2] It has been recorded in the annals of Muslim chronicles, that at the time of the Zuhr prayers, Sophronius invited Umar to pray in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Umar declined, fearing that accepting the invitation might endanger the church's status as a Christian temple, and that Muslims might break the treaty and turn the temple into a mosque.[10] After staying for ten days at Jerusalem, the caliph returned to Medina.[19]
