The Third Force has become a reality in the UK. Who ever thought the LDP would garner 30% of the votes even though they won only 10% of the seats? And none of the two major parties -- Labour and Conservative -- could form the new government without the involvement of the Third Force, LDP.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

I told Zaid Ibrahim a long time ago: don’t join PKR. This was when he was still in Umno and not even made a Cabinet Minister yet. I asked him to lead a Third Force, a ‘balance’ between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat.

Zaid said even if we create a Third Force we would still need a political party platform. Fine, I replied, then join DAP and bring a group of Malay professionals, civil society movement and NGO activists, Bloggers, and so on, with him into DAP -- maybe a core group of 30 or so people not yet committed to any political party.

“Why DAP? Why not PKR?” Zaid asked. And I gave him my reasons why DAP and not PKR.

Not long after that Zaid was made a Minister and I thought that that was the end of the story. Then Zaid resigned as a Minister and, again, I broached the subject. This time I proposed that if he does not want to join DAP, and since I do not agree that he joins PKR, then maybe he can form a new party to ‘house’ this Third Force.

Zaid was skeptical about the idea. He said that a lot of time and money would be required to get a new party established. The short cut would be to latch on to an existing party. We told him we did not like that idea but agreed to let the matter rest.

Now, we can tell Zaid: I told you so! We did not think PKR was suitable for him. He is too ‘independent’, does not have the ‘discipline to kowtow’ to what he does not believe in, will not be able to tolerate the nonsense in PKR (and we know there is a lot of nonsense in PKR), and is a ‘loose cannon’, just like the rest of us, and will always shoot at anything that moves -- friend or foe.

My final word to Zaid is this. Get out of PKR. Forget about contesting the party elections. Leave and come help us lead the Third Force. Let the Third Force make an electoral pact with any of the 20 or so political parties from both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat that may be prepared to make an electoral pact with us.

And if none are prepared to make an electoral pact with our Third Force then we shall contest the general election in three-corner fights even if we lose or lose our deposit.

Winning or losing the general election is not the issue. The issue is to offer the voters an alternative choice in the event they find both Barisan Nasional as well as Pakatan Rakyat unsuitable choices.

Let us call this Third Force Barisan Rakyat. It is neither Barisan Nasional nor Pakatan Rakyat. It is the alternative to both.

The Third Force has become a reality in the UK. Who ever thought the LDP would garner 30% of the votes even though they won only 10% of the seats? And none of the two major parties -- Labour and Conservative -- could form the new government without the involvement of the Third Force, LDP.

This is not that easy to realise in Malaysia, of course, because, in Malaysia, politics is all about money and the Third Force will not have that kind of money. But do not underestimate the intelligence of the Malaysian voter. If enough Malaysians are committed to a Third Force we might yet be surprised.

This may not happen this coming general election. It may take time to see a Third Force with enough clout to force both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat to agree to political reforms, which is going to be the agenda of the Third Force.

Heck, it took a long time for it to happen in the UK. 30 years, in fact, after 17 years of Conservative and 13 years of Labour. But finally it did happen. And, in time, it will happen in Malaysia as well.

But we must be prepared for the long haul. There are going to be no short cuts. We can plant the seed now. But we may not be around to see the fruits of our labour.

So be it!

It’s Zaid vs PKR, as criticisms mount

(The Malaysian Insider) - The gulf between PKR deputy presidential hopeful Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and the party leadership appears to be widening, with vice president Lee Boon Chye today rubbishing the former lawyer’s “bewildering” claim that PKR tried to stop him from contesting.

Newcomer Zaid cuts a lonely figure as senior party figures continue to slam the former Umno man for also alleging that underhanded tactics were being used to discredit him following his candidancy announcement.

“No one has prevented Zaid from contesting and campaigning for any post including the presidency,” Lee said in a statement.

In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia on Sunday, Zaid had alleged that he was being prevented from contesting for the deputy president post.

The former de facto law minister said that a party like PKR, which claimed to be democratic, should ensure that those who were qualified to contest were given a chance to do so.

“Even though we may love Azmin or Anwar, it shouldn’t be to the extent where orders are issued not to nominate me,” he had said.

Lee said Zaid’s “unkind insinuations” that other PKR leaders, such as chief strategist Chua Tian Chang and N. Gobalakrishnan, had also been prevented from contesting were equally untrue.

He pointed out that Chua had won the Batu division chief post and Gobalakrishnan was still vying for the same post at Padang Serai.

Lee also questioned Zaid’s motive in choosing to air his grievances publicly to the press — citing his interview with Mingguan Malaysia, the weekend edition of Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia — and urged the PKR Federal Territory chief to go through regular party channels instead.

“He should stop playing the victim to gain sympathy at the expense of the party,” the Gopeng MP said.

Lee added that he was “perplexed” by Zaid’s claim that PKR was blocking his reform agenda as the party was always trying to enhance its reform-based policies, and challenged him to explain the agenda.

“Zaid should also reveal the so called ‘reform agenda’ and proceed to advocate them through the usual decision making process rather than providing sound bites to the press,” he said.

Lee pointedly reminded Zaid to focus on the “real adversary”, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno, even in the midst of PKR’s intense party election.

The hotly contested fight for deputy presidency — largely between Zaid and vice president Azmin Ali — has revealed deep divisions within PKR and thrown the party’s commitment to direct elections into sharp focus.

Azmin, who is also Selangor chief, is believed to be PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s preferred choice, while Zaid is said to be popular with East Malaysian and non-Malay members.

The party leadership, however, has warned of “Trojan horses” in PKR — thought to be a veiled reference to Zaid — intent on using the direct election to take over the party.

PKR amended its constitution last year to give one member one vote in direct elections.

Earlier this month, some 400,000 PKR members began voting for divisional leaders and the 25 members of the central leadership council, including president, deputy president and four vice presidents.

The party’s 218 divisions will hold two separate meetings, one for the annual general meeting and election of divisional leaders, and a second to vote for national leaders.

The divisions will vote for national leaders on weekends, from October 29 to November 21.

At the rate the UMNO/BN goons are looting the country, we may be left with a bankrupt nation by the time we wait for the Third Force to come along. I still believe Pakatan Rakyat is the fastest way and the best hope for a change; at the very least we have the strength and maturity of PAS and DAP both of which are holding up admirably so far! I say we go for PR's march to Putrajaya!

Thank You for the exchange. This is the first time we cross path and it wont be the last. Since you have mentioned Ridsect spray on me- the flies, you are quite interesting to engage. My comments in (brackets)

written by pixieface, October 01, 2010 14:18:30 Better My.
This is the last time I will change remarks with you. I am with MT for the last fIve years.
I am with Pakatan i.e. DAP AND PAS.
(Good that you have strong MT/DAP/PAS credentials)

NOT PKR. NOT WITH AA AND ANWAR. I ALWAYS HAD APPREHENSION ABOUT ANWAR.
(Misplaced apprehensivon on a reborn Anwar, to me. He has worked his guts to try to put the best show for the good force. For that, we ought to pat him the bac, say out loaud "Well done" , give him his due reconginition and leeway.)

IF ANWAR HAD NOT BEEN KICKED OUT BY MM, WOULD YOU STILL SUPPORT HIM ???
(Emphatic NO. We all all be condeming him in no uncertains terms)

WHY DO YOU THINK MM KICKED HIM OUT, HE WAS PLOTTING TO BE NO.1. REMEMBER GHAFAR BABA ???
(Dont care the reasons. That is past & gone. If you are 100% UMNO supporter 6 years ago and switch to DAP/PAS, others might question you but most others & I wont. The current and the future is MORE important. )

LOOK BACK AT HIS HISTORY !!!! THE BIG QUESTION IS, WHAT DID ZAID DO, FOR YOU TO DOWN PLAY HIM ???
( I supported him fully to win in HS. I supported him to go for VP but his credentials as unelected MP and a newie to PKR were distinct disadvantages. From a more objective criteria and marks set up for Nurul, Azmin, Zaid, in my general observation/biasness, he came third but the winning post is not insurmountable to Zaid. Think of the scenario that you are Azmi, pixe guy. Long history of dedication, and elected MP, capable in the eyes of the PKR supremos, how would you feel?

But there is "Something WRONG about Zaid" in recent weeks on his speeches, from my observation and confirmed by Lee Bon Chye, VP PKR. His statement also published in MT 1-2 days ago.

Now Zaid should be relegated to a distant third with odds like 10 to 1 for him to get to the top, dropping from 3 to 1. I like to see a contrite Zaid to start again in PKR because he appears to have the potential to contribute. However, it does not mean others in PKR can't contribute like Zaid - we like to think he can do the job better for PKR but some doubts are creeping in on the "Something is wrong about Zaid"

WHAT'S WRONG WHEN HARIS/SABM PROPOSED A THIRD FORCE TO COMPLEMENT PAKATAN ???
( The negatives been been listed past few days, much as some want to go that way on the spur of the moment of disagtreement with the present. You CAN"T go thro the whole cycle again to setup the 3rd force at this current moment unless you are calling it quits for the next GE and wait for the third GE after the next two to contest meaningfully. On the way to the third GE from now you will have the same problems popping up again. THEN what? If you are a insider bn trojan womie, this is what you want for PKR/PR).

IN FACT ONLY OF LATE, I NOTICED YOUR COMMENTS. SO, WHO'S THE NEWBIE AH !!!!!
(Yes, I more newie than you based on your declaration but your thinking (or too much or lack of) in the past years are beginning to cloud your judgement on this issue, even a day 1 other newie may be able to see your folly instantly.)

WHATEVER IT IS, YOU ARE FREE TO EXPRESS YOUR " WORLDLY VIEWS", BUT DON'T FORCE IT ON OTHERS.
(Yes, I do keep abreast of world events and have been around many places - all these news are available free at the touch of some keystrokes. We can learn from them. instead of trying by trial and errors. We could throw away 10 years for something we can do in 1 year - that is effectiveness - efficiency and utilisation at the max.)

AND KEEP YOUR RELIGIOUS OPINIONS TO YOURSELF !!!!
( you have something against religous discussion? If you dont agree with my opinions, thast is fine. State your points and we agree to disagree and move on) )

YOU NEED SOME RIDSECT ???? THERE SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF FLIES AND VERMIN AROUND YOU.
(Now this is what prompted me to reply. When a chap can say this, you are already an interesting character by my account , a buddy that I go out with for a beer anytime, rather than some boring inactivated hibernating cold-reezed kinds who only read and read MT, and wont pay the mickey mouse fee to subscribe to MT to write their points of views, and wont go and buy/pay for the beer when it is their turn to buy the beer. I say they are cheapskates. You are a champ for staying with MT as a paid subscriber and writer , pixie, for 5 years.

It was not too bad in our engagement, Pixie? Common, extend your hands for a handshake,as I have extended mine already more than half-way to you.. The things your hands are touching in both your pockets can wait. Talk to u more next time ! )

When Zaid kicked umoono, many had asked him to form a new party. But he went ahead with joining PKR without realizing that PKR is still wearing the sheep clothed wolves of umoono!
Reading Zaid's comments in the last 2 years, I felt his pain of not getting the leadership to set for change. Anwar has his umoono clothed, Azmin is kind but the umoono traits remain crisp in his approach to change.
Zaid being a liberal, a Parti Liberal Malaysia is apt for the 3rd force. I will join Zaid even if the name of party is something else.

There won’t be any room yet for a meaningful Third Force until UMNO/BN can be removed from power. UMNO/BN need to out of the scene before any positive movement can be realistically implemented or take root.

Although weaken, UMNO/BN is still a formidable force. Come-on, be realistic, stay focused and keep the pressure on. Stick to the original game plan of “one on one” contest, a three corners fight will only benefit UMNO/BN.

In this loop-sided playing field, a Third Force would be of no help in wrestling power from UMNO/BN and more likely a hindrance to any realistic opportunities for opposition to kick out the UMNO/BN government.

Whatever you start as the 4rd force, what guarantee do you have that it wont have the same problems as we see now. Lets say Zaid start the 3rd force, following your recommendation of penisnular & East malaysia. Hoola 2x at the start. Some rakayat like you wil be excited. After awhile, the members of Zaid 3rd force do EXACTLY the same what Zaid has done in the recent past - openly criticise own party at the wrogn time/wrong place and speak to Utusan, all this without the authorisation of the central PKR committee.(re Lee BC , Vp PKr report) or not under proper managed open discussion forum, then WHAT? Discard Zaid and team and setup 4th force?

Professional & intlectuals have refrained from participating in Malaysia politics due to insecurity and other factors. This shall remain that way now and the the future, until the PR government can open the government, restore proper fully functioning instiutions, rewards the polticians properly, in line pr close to private sectors CEOs pays, then you get real professionals clamouring to come into the public sectors to make more differences.
.
"A thrid force would complement PR."
No, the 3rd force will seriously DISTRACT strongly Pakatan agenda. We must focus on bad governance of bn and restore good governance that Pakatan wil bring WITH our help post GE.

"And I suppose you are a worm trojan for PKR, Better my ?????? "
No, I am not. If I had not come across your name in the past, and you are a newie here or writing as a "guest", you are more likely a bnda fide trojan worm that should be put to sleep with some insecticide that kill in 2 seconds. As you are a regular, I may just spare you the label of the revolting sleeper cell worm but whether the label stick shoudl stick on you will depend on what you are on about in the future. I am for Pakatan, through thick and thin, by hook or crook. I am on the bandwagon that there is one and only objective for us all - that is to get into Putrajaya. The vehicle to get there is Pakatan. Nothing else matters. And to all those wavering their support due to some minor incidents like Zaid (which has been cleared by Lee VP, PKR) I like to invite all to rejoin this bandwagon to push to Putrajaya in this Pakatan vehicle. There is NO other party alternative, as of now, to take us there.

And thank you kenny for raising some points that have not been brought up on the impracticality of the 3rd force as of now.

A third force must be implemented into politics very carefully otherwise it will just split the votes between PKR and the new party. The UMNO/BN crazy supporters will still vote for UMNO/BN. This third party is just what UMNO is praying for to save them.

If a third party should run for elections it should be where PKR is not contesting or in cities where well informed well educated people reside. This third party should not be like PKR or BN where only party faithfuls are rewarded and a few control freaks grab all the power. In this new party for a person to be eligible to run he must be the best i.e education, working career, experience, maturity, brains or IQ level etc. Only the smartest and cleverest person regardless of race or religion will be chosen and not because of popularity. The reason why Singapore is doing so well is because there are many clever people in the government. The application for a job as a government minister must just be like an application for the post of a CEO of a company. A selection panel must decide who is most qualified for the job not chosen because he is a party loyalist.

The way government ministers are currently being chosen by BN and PKR will result in many crooks being elected. These crooks will then become power crazy and greedy will play dirty politics to stay in power. We see this happening not just in Malaysia but even in UK, Australia, USA to some extent. Malaysia should not blindly follow the defective British Westminster System, we should set the standard for the rest of the world to follow.

With all due respect to the proposers of a 3rd force, allow me to state my point of view. Having our present government and all our enforcement and electoral agencies now working against the people, to deliberate on a 3rd force at this moment would be, as they say, putting the cart before the horse. We should have a real 2-party system first before bringing the 3rd force into existence. And the criterion for having our 2-party system is to give Pakatan the experience in federal governance. We are already seeing much higher quality people in Pakatan after 2 short years than in BN after 53 years.

With our present situation, creating a 3rd force now would only serve to weaken Pakatan Rakyat. Any 3rd force will never have the luxury of siding with Labour or Conservative like they do in the UK. Invariably, the only choice for our 3rd force to align itself with would be Pakatan. If the sucessful candidates from the 3rd force align themselves with UMNO/BN, they will be crippled in time like what happened to Gerakan in 1969 and PAS in 1974. Moreover, please don't forget the bad old Umno could be called a saint compared to the blatant crooks in the present Umno Baru. Which means to say, setting up a 3rd force to be the kingmaker in the battle of Pakatan/BN now would be premature as it can only pro-Pakatan. In actuality, I think all of us have no choice presently but to join forces in bringing down Umno instead of rocking the boat. It would be wiser to set up the 3rd force only after the next GE, win or lose, if we insist on having it.

As it is, with the kind of bad losers in Umno around(think Perak), we can foresee that the country would momentarily be in disarray at least, even if Pakatan wins the GE by itself. Would anyone imagine what the situation would be if there's a hung parliament caused by a 3rd force in Malaysia like what happened abroad? One thing for certain is that there will be no gentlemanly behaviour as shown by the Australians and English recently. The likelihood of chaos here will be extremely high.

Umno will never lose the GE quietly, but it would be very much more difficult for it to defy world opinion if there's no hung parliament. The fact for world pressure going for us here is Malaysia is not Myanmar or Zimbabwe, yet.

Lastly, we have to remember that institutions like the EC, judiciary, MACC, PDRM must all be given back some semblance of independence and fairness before we can even think of comparing any unborn and distracting 3rd force with the LDP in UK. And Umno must go before anyone can have any hope of anything happening.

And, no individual, not Azmin nor Zaid, is as important as our seeing the downfall of Umno. After that, we can discuss or pile on the pressure on any bad guy.

Agree. it is irresponsble for anyone to talk about 3rd force now. We have waited for so long and are so close to victory. Bn victory is more likely in a seat with 3 parties contesting than 2 parties contestants, as it had happened in the last election, with PKR/DAP/PAS contesting in the same seats and lost ot bn . Isn't that so?

All the problems faced by PKR/DAP/PAS today will confront the 3rd force, no matter who lead the party. Then what do we do? Go for 4th force? Youi got to be kidding.

We just can't let one individual like Zaid or incidents to derail our march to Putrajaya. I am very surprised that regular active pro PR contributors to MT would abandon ship just on 1-2 issues. What does this tell you of your conviction? We have to be much2x stronger than the wavering support, so easily shot down by some "minor incidents.

We lost 2 weeks of arguing PKR direct election, instead of cases agaisnt bn. get the diect election out of the way asap and we can refocus on the main issues. PKR needs to re-examine the negatives of long drawn out direct election of this large scale of 400,000 members(?) or imprvements to it. However, one of the objective was to neutralise any corrupt influence is a good one.

I finally feel HOPE again for our country. I thank God for Pete and Khoo Kay Peng for sharing similar thoughts online today. Nothing is a coincidence. I believe both were God inspired and affirming the direction we should take. Barisan Rakyat it is!

We certainly need a single political party to challenge both coalitions. History is going to repeat itself. The Pakatan Rakyat coalition is going to fail too. Coalitions don't work. Too many "bosses". And the in-fighting and intrigues within EACH component party is destructive, time consuming, at the expense of the nation and killing the country just as BN's component parties did...

OK, I'm in for the long haul in whatever capacity I can contribute to make this a reality for the sake of our children. much too soon for that sort of political approach in our country. zaid is right in opting for an existing avenue, not start a new one.
that blustering heavyweight that has been ruling the roost for half a century has just got a stunning punch-up from a new coalition force of once impossible partners. it's reeling from what can be described as a near-tko, but with its vast financial strength and long and wide connections, not least control over state institutions, only a concerted bout will knock it out.
what can a Third Force, drawing from the performance of the ldp in UK achieve? ldp's surprising performance, most forget, is the result of that pool of pro-labour voters disenchanted by their bungling new leader gordon brown. can you imagine the letdown from the switch from that inspiring new labour tony blair to a portly, error prone brown? so what do they do? they vote ldp as a second choice. but bear in mind that UK has had these 3 parties for decades, a 2-party system always with a third force.
will this Third Force help PR at all, or will it split the opposition votes? the last GE has proven that straight fights give the opposition a chance. a third force will only produce 3-cornered contests and we all know who will win.
no third force.

Yes, Bro Pete, I remember vividly when you lamented then about Zaid should start another party or join DAP so that DAP will become a more multi-racial party and that was about the time that he called it a day with umno before Najib took over.

If he had joined DAP, he would have also been attacked the way he was attacked during the HS by-election but the only difference is he would not have to face saboteurs from internally apart from external forces but now it is all water under the bridge.

I have always supported him morally and hope that will a solution that PKR resolve this issue otherwise I fully agree a third force should be led by him and others from Sabah and Sarawak new blood join the fray and bloggers, NGOs, all unite behind the Barisan Rakyat banner. Somehow Pakatan Rakyat must work with Barisan Rakyat. We are at the last hurdle, practically. One more jump and we are at the stretch sprinting towards Putra Jaya by 2013 or so. I have waited for this likely victory for a long time, so why talk about Third Force now.

I put in the picture all of you out there, if we cannot make it this time, Mahathir will be in slow walking motion and laughing all the way to his grave.

If that were to happen, the only decent thing left for us to do is close your computer.… Balik kampong tanam jagung!

RPK. there may not be anything left in the nation after the umnoputras and their eunuchs in BeEnd are through voraciously plundering it, even as we read this now, let alone in the long haul before Barisan Rakyat gets on her feet. The cancerous rot that is BeEnd must be lopped off asap and time is not on our side. The Change Acceleration Process (CAP) must be initiated asap with all stakeholder buy-ins identified, garnered and committed. May the Force be with y'all. smilies/wink.gif

"But we must be prepared for the long haul" - I like this advice, RPK & I take solace in it.
It is becoming increasingly clear PR will not be able to dislodge the UMNOputras from Putrajaya come GE13.
So adopting this perspective is soothing.
I like the adoption of the Third Force agenda -well, if Britain's Third Force took 30 years to mature, we can jolly well afford to be patient.
But we must still work at the agenda of change.
Change towards a more mature, fair, just, civil and democractic society.
Change, we can.
Change, we must!!

"And if none are prepared to make an electoral pact with our Third Force then we shall contest the general election in three-corner fights even if we lose or lose our deposit."

NO NO NO, Not yet, not until badly needed reforms - free and fair election, independent EC, Judiciary, MACC plus viable 2-party/coalition in place.

there is some semblance of a third force, the ultra right perkasa loaded towards giving a leg up to umno when the time comes.

it is the nemesis of the third force intended for zaid to head.

Why DAP and not PKR? Simply because the immatured malaysian politics is still operating along racial
lines and DAP is considered a chinese chauvinistic party. I am a british chinese and I am proud to say that recently I joined the BNP and EDL, both are welcoming non-whites members, who are sympathetc to their policies( anti-immigrants/ not so much against chinese. anti-multiculturalism and ant-islam). In malaysia, is chinese allowed to join UMNO or would a malay join the MCA? A fouth political force is developing in the UK which could not be ignored. Nick Griffin may be a PM one day and I hope he will.

The idea for the third force remains only that, an idea. Until the parties that can carry some weight so it can truly be called a 'force' subscribe to the idea, it will remain a chimera.

There are some talented individuals behind this move, but it requires more than individuals to make this a reality. That will only happen when enough Malaysians voice out that they want an alternative to the supposedly antipodal forces of BN and PR. As long as the majority believe that PR is the antithesis of BN then the third force will remain an idea not made corporeal.

Hope comes from East Malaysia, as the need there for a third force is more apparent than in the peninsula, but in reality this nation as a whole needs better than the existing contenders. SABM, for all its visibity cannot swing it on its own, and even though I believe that SABM is more in tune with middle class issues than truly egalitarian concerns, perhaps they can be the catalysts needed to move us out of this quagmire.

Or we can just shoot all the politicians and be done with it.

No, I see a 3rd force clearly dilutes the Pakatan effort to reach Putrajaya.

Malaysian needs a strong alternative government to carry out the good overnance/good reforms over time, not being held back by independendt or 3rd force. we dont have the luxury of some developed country getting into the stalemate of 3rd force, like in UK or also of the same nature in Australia well.

Now, if Zaid is very much "too "independent", does not have the ‘discipline to kowtow’ to what he does not believe in, will not be able to tolerate the nonsense in PKR ", he should take the indepedent route as it appears he might want tot be a team player , or specially assigend postion in PKR for his ability to contribute. But he must be a team player first.

Geting Zaid to start the 3rd force?
His very strong individualistic character, shown quite clearly recently, confirmed by PKR Lee BC vice-presidents, PKR is a negative. If he allows every of his rd force members to do what he has done in PKR recently, the 3rd force would go "kalam kabut" , a laughing stock. No, no 3rd force for him.

third force should be a coalition of politicians from sabah and sarawak. By doing this, they will decide who leads the nation.
