(NST) - A Pas leader yesterday slammed DAP chairman Karpal Singh for opposing the implementation of hudud, saying he did not understand Islamic criminal laws.

Shah Alam Pas Ulama chief Ahmad Dasuki Abd Rani said the party should fully explain hudud to Karpal and that he should not see it as something violent.

"Karpal clearly does not understand hudud, which is an integral part of syariah, or Islamic law.

"He should not comment on hudud, let alone oppose it, if he does not understand these sacred laws," said Ahmad Dasuki when contacted.

Hudud is a term used in syariah to describe the class of punishment for crimes such as theft, fornication and adultery, consumption of alcohol and other intoxicants, and apostasy.

Ahmad Dasuki said: "If he cannot accept hudud, how can he accept a colonial law that allows capital punishment, which is more violent?"

Last week, Karpal, who has been consistent in his objection to the implementation of hudud in Malaysia, said hudud was not part of Pakatan Rakyat's common policy framework and that it would not be included in its common manifesto.

On Thursday, Terengganu Pas Youth chief Mohd Nor Hamzah urged Karpal to quit politics because his "outdated views" were a liability to Pakatan Rakyat. "Although Pas says hudud is for Muslims, Karpal continues to attack Pas leaders.

"If he does not understand the issue, he should ask for a clarification, instead of outbursts through the media."
