(Bernama) - Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar describes the statement on the crime rate by former inspector general of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan as his personal view.

He said the crime rate in Malaysia is still low compared to other countries and that the statistics were based on overall crime cases as determined by the Global Peace Index (GPI).

"It was his personal view (Tan Sri Musa) abd being the former police chief, he did not receive information on the latest statistics," he said after the passing out parade and presentation of certificates for Kor Sukarelawan Polis Siswa Siswi (Kor Suksis) Institut Pengajian Tinggi Awam (IPTA) SeMalaysia at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak here today.

Ismail admitted there are criminal cases in the country but they are under control.

He urged the public not to worry as the police will always ensure that the people are safe from criminal threats.

Recently, a news portal quoted Musa as saying that police were trying to conceal the actual crime rate and that public security was at a worrying level.

The crime rate reportedly dropped 10.1 percent to 63,221 cases between January and May compared to 70,343 cases over the corresponding period last year.
