(The Malaysian Insider) - The MCA, the second largest component party in the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, has shrugged off a recent independent survey that indicated falling support among Chinese voters for the prime minister.

The Merdeka Center survey, carried out three weeks after the April 28 rally for electoral reforms, showed that only 37 per cent of Chinese voters are satisfied with Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s leadership, a huge drop from 56 per cent in February.

“I am not dismissing the poll, but you have to read it in light of events,” MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said today.

He said the party was not influenced by the survey’s result and will “continue to work.”

“If we function according to polls, we won’t be able to do our work.”

Asked about the reforms that the MCA would be undertaking in the face of the survey results, he said it would work harder, adding that “working harder is already a reform”.

He added that although the MCA is a “Chinese-based party, when we collect donations we give it to all races, all our programmes are multiracial.”

He contrasted the MCA with opposition party DAP, saying that “DAP takes but seldom gives back to society” and it was only interested in “grabbing power”.
