MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek urges the government to take a second look at the race-based quota.

(Free Malaysia Today) - MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek today urged the government to review the racial quotas for Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships for overseas courses.

However, he said that MCA supports quotas for the socially disadvantaged groups, students in Sabah and Sarawak and those based on merit.

“We support the quota for socially disadvantaged groups and students in Sabah and Sarawak. That’s only fair because school facilities in Sabah and Sarawak are not of the same standards as those in Kuala Lumpur or even Ipoh.

But he suggested that the 60% racial quotas should be reviewed.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Aziz, who is in charge of the PSD scholarships, said that the government had allocated 1,500 overseas scholarships to top students.

Of this, only 300 or 20% of the total were given based entirely on merit to students who score straight 9A+.

The rest of the scholarships are divided under the categories of Sabah and Sarawak (10%), the socially disadvantaged (10%), and race-based (60%).

“We fully support the 60% quota but there is a need to review it,” Chua said.

Although I think Chua Soi Lek meant well but I truly believe he will never be able to change anything.

Singapore will love this list. Does anyone has the list of top scores in Malaysia? If yes, please forward it to Singapore Embassy as I hate to see a someone future goes down the tube.

If I were the CEO of Talent Corp, I would quit as all the policies are against him and he is swimming against the tide and fighting a loosing battle.

You see how stupid MCA was until I raised the quota issue ...... next step ....

go to court and find out how many rich people got PSD scholarship ........ I think even the judge will throw himself through a non-existent window !!!!

All this Malay Muslim paper work allocation by quota looks good only on paper ..... in real life ....... allocations are done under the table .... a very big one at that .... probably on Wednesdays !!!!!!!

Convert all to study loans and only for local universities and see how many rich people are interested ....... only poor dying people with no choice will take ... next to doing prostitution.

No issue .... no corruption .... and no political mileage ....... but cannot be done because no moral courage !!!!!!!smilies/angry.gifsmilies/angry.gifsmilies/angry.gifsmilies/angry.gifsmilies/angry.gifsmilies/angry.gif

"We fully support the 60 % quota, but there's a need to review it."

WTF are you talking about Chua Soi Lek ? It's the same as saying that you fully agree with being screwed by UMNO, but please can you be more gentle ?

Aiya, ah lek, they will not change their policies lah. They do not care much for the chinese votes now as long as they can maintain a section of stupid mca and gerakan chinese votes. They are aiming for the additional malays votes, so there is no point barking out loud now, they will not listen. They will just "give them a few more (scholarship) to shut them (mca) up" lah.

Getting a scholarship is like getting a good screw. It makes a difference. I'm sure you appreciate that Chua.

Whatever the criteria you implement, make sure all students get a scholarship, or study loan. I would think that getting even 5 As is a good student and should not be excluded. With such a large window there is no need for another special allocation for the 'socially disadvantaged', whatever that means.

There is no need for scholarships to foreign universities. This should be phased out.

Why can't the PSD get this scholarship issue right?
Why the recurrent controversy every year[since the award of it became acountable to the stakeholders]!!!
Precisely because the selection process is not above board: politicians' cables and racial qoutas I dare reckoned are the main reasons.

What is the use of giving overseas scholarships.
many who get this won't be coming back home anyway.

best use the money on improving local education and makibng it affordable for all. We can get the best brains from overseas and we can give the best equipment if need be. These guys will be required to spend a certain amount of time doing lectures. The rest, they can spend doing their research, using post grad students as asistants. That is how we advance forward.

And this is how we keep the best brains.

Presently, the best brains are selling insurance and doing something which are not suited to their qualification, as their job scope is not available locally.

Give according to merits first and then according to mercy and compassion if one wants to see a great nation Malaysia. Only these truth can set us all free to prosper together . Or are we still fools who care not that we are forever quarreling about how selfish we are while the house is on fire?
