MALAYSIA'S government put off a politically risky plan to enforce a 4 per cent goods and service tax, cheering opposition critics on Sunday who claimed it would burden the poor.

Prime Minister Najib Razak's administration had previously planned to debate legislation in Parliament later this month to impose the tax by 2011 in an effort to boost revenue by about 1 billion ringgit (S$418 million) annually.

The plan stirred fierce criticism from social activists, who insisted the tax would cause inflation to rise and unnecessarily trouble poor and middle-class earners.

Second Finance Minister Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said on Saturday the government will indefinitely delay plans to debate the legislation until it can convince people that the tax would aid the country's economic well-being. 'It will depend on our engagement with the public and acceptance of the people on its implementation,' Mr Ahmad Husni was quoted as saying by the national news agency, Bernama. 'We do not want to put a time frame on that.'

Opposition activists, who had threatened to stage a protest against the sales tax outside Parliament on Monday, urged the government to completely scrap the plan. 'Perhaps the tax is not being imposed now because (the government) does not have a solid hold in Parliament,' said Mahfuz Omar, vice president of the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party.

Analysts have said the sales tax might spur public dissatisfaction against Najib's ruling National Front coalition, which is expected to call for elections in a large state on Borneo island sometime over the next year. The broad-based consumption tax is supposed to replace a narrowly applied 10 per cent sales tax and five percent services tax. It is meant to be levied on transactions at all stages of production of goods and services. -- AP

Congratulations to the rakyat. .

beEND is arrogant. Thet are not likely to bow to political pressure. But there is a good chance, they will to Peoples Power.

A lesson learnt. All Malaysians should lend their full support to issues raised by Pakatan ,including those from the states. One such example is the Kelantan royalty. Unity is strength.

Anything the govt do is for their benefit and anti-rakyat. Why when there a billions being squandered here and there as per the PAC/Audit reposrts yet no appropriate measures taken? Why no accountability for all the Petonas money? If this GST is another way to squeeze from the people to fund all your wastages and pilferings shame on you.

You people have no credibility left. You refuse to take action against the racists and allow them to drum up seditious and inflammatory statements which drives away investors and non-malays from the country and yet pretend to try to attract FDI by all the NEM etc which is sabotaged by your own racists b4 it can take off. Such bodoh leaders, cannot even run the country properly.

You better step down and give Pakatan a chance to run the country properly. For 52 years you not only failed to run the country properly you mismanaged the resources are bringing it to ruin.

Pakatan for Malaysia!!!

Let's celebrate while we can.
Many an analyst has claimed that the GST is a necessary evil.
But the UMNOputras should come clean and tell the rakyat the truth instead of lying that the average rakyat will not be burdened.
Also leakages of public funds must be plugged!!

People must realise - the govt must be AFRAID of the rakyat, not us rakyat cowering in fear. I just got some berita angin - GE may be called as early as this year - possibly last quarter?

After the bn morons vote for BN again, the govt can then go ahead & implement GST. That's you get for supporting BN. Next, I predict, will be the govt announcing, no more 100% EPF withdrawal at age 55. Just mark my votes. Vote PR. And stop reading the msm - it's poison is misleading & deadly to your brain matter, if any.

Instead of burdening the poor people by introducing the unworkable sales tax, why didnt the government go after some of the big time cronies and probe into their billions and find out how their riches came about.

What about Baginda who got away with the RM500 millions commission? Did he paid his taxes?

NO gst under current bad muslim UMNO mob with proven records on "implementation failure, revenue unaccountability and corruption"

Under open PR Federal government in future, open debate on pros & cons is highly desirable. Writer is in favour for its contribution to budget & accounts surplus

Abolish ISA. We have stopped listening to you. For Malaysia.
