(The Malaysian Insider) KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein blamed the country's high crime rate on the demonisation of institutions such as the police.

He said this in Parliament yesterday evening, immediately drawing stinging criticisms from members of the Opposition.

"Institutions such as the police force are made to be seen as irresponsible, as bad when they are also at the same time just trying to do their jobs. Besides PDRM, the delay in the various trials and judging process is also one of the factors for the escalation of the nation's crime rate," said Hishammuddin.

He said one of the ways to deal with the matter is to speed up the legal process.

He also identified four major states in the country as havens for criminal activities — Penang, Selangor, the Federal Territory and Johor. However, he said that the crime wave in Selangor and the Federal Territory has gone down drastically due to measures taken by the ministry as well as the police.

Unfortunately, I have no longer regards for our Polis. Today, at 8.45am at Summit/Kesas junction, the polis manning the traffic kept all motorists turning to Subang really pess-off by having among me wanted 10 minutes before able to move. His action caused a big jam, and I saw a driver driving a tractor told him off when keeping all motorists waited too long. Guess what this Malay traffic policeman did, showed his MIDDLE FINGER up in the air. Is this what we call professional policeman????? Pls take action to discipline this guy!!!

2nd incident, there is VIP who stays at Bkt Antarabangsa who has been abusing all the traffic which using police rider escort to beat all the traffic jam and followed by his bodyguard. He is a cabinet member of Najib, and marked this car out, proton perdana WQV 7613. I have wrote and complained to The Star newspaper but fell deaf and no action. Don't believe, just go to Bkt Antarabangsa junction to MRR2 and wait for this VIP at around 7.40am every day. You wont miss him. What action are you going to take on him?

You are better off as a gangsta. Look at the way you wield the kris before the UMNO Youth assembly on a number of occasions. You also not only look like a mad man you are in fact one. We just wonder how you manage to pass your law exams.
You are a shame even to your former law partners from the firm which bears your stinking name. The senior partner whose name precedes yours as well as the short balding partner are both highly respected & honourable lawyers. You render them "guilty by association" with you. You are a shame to the good name of your father the good Tun. His hard-owned money to bring you up & providing you with education had gone down the drain.
Go to Hell the right place for you.

I think Malaysia is better off without any policing. In Malaysia when you see a cop everyone crowd around to see arrests or bashings. In the West the cops is to help and assist. The perception is different. To change that you have to start from the very top. That's not going to happen.

Hishamuddin's statement is truly god-sent. After one or two weeks of relatively stronger BN performance (as in play-acting, not doing actual work) under Najib, saying all the right things about improving internet penetration (some IT speakers probably getting some laughs when they quote the PM on this one), and other media blitz on 1Malaysia.. and at the same time PR suffering under increasing internal dissensions, Hisham and Nazri just have to put all that is wrong with the country under BN back into the spotlight again. If I were a Pakatan MP, I'd send the two of them a thank you card each, and ask them to keep this up.

The residents were very happy when DNP’s former sales office at Taman Seri Impian, Alma, Bukit Mertajam, Penang was turned into a Police Station. But it's a big disappointing show and and effort to spend more of the rakyat's money! And they even have a beautiful name for all this wastage: Community Policing!! If you pass by the Police Station at night, the lights are turn out and the door / garden gates are closed! I think they are more scared of the "hantu's" than the residents!

Even with the police station right at our door-steps, we can don't see policemen do preventive crime patrols around the “tamans” in the area. Burglaries, robberies, house breakings and snatch-thefts still go on like "business as usual". Young Mat Rempits without helmets (I am sure also without licence) recklessly ride their bikes around Jalan Alma Jaya (and also to the nearby schools) like there is no tomorrow, everyday.

Policemen hide at a sundry shop near the Alma main traffic lights junction and radio his colleague under a tree about 100m away to stop unsuspecting motorist who do not wear seat belts. A neighbour related that the policeman asked, “Minta tolong, bulan in tak cukup quota (meaning not enough to spend), kerajaan pun tak bagi bonus tahun ini"!! What shamelessness!

And the Minister expects us to have a high regard for his mata-mata? How can anyone (inc. children) have any respect for such useless public servants? I am sure they will now consider me as demonizing them too. To me it's just plain old "You Ask For It!" Still remember the TV programme?smilies/grin.gif

Know your Chicken from the egg! Demonising PDRM leads to higher crime or higher crime leads to demonising PDRM?

What a sorry excuse, Mr. Minister! But blaming the public for escalating crime in a stable nation? There's only 2 ways about it, either criminals are getting better and more organised or the policing has gotten worse. Guess what the solution is? Get the police, AG, etc to do their jobs... properly! Get their priorities right! Sedition, criminal defamation, illegal assembly should be down the list. Don't waste your time on crimes that do not clearly harm the public you're out there to protect. And also get rid of the dead beat IGP. Time to pencen pencenlah! Dah tak guna tak malu lagi!

theory is simple. if u r someone with cash, u can settle anything with the PDRM. murderer can be innocent; drug trafficker can stroll the street or victim of rapist can be accused of defamation. HOW TO CONTROL CRIME RATE, Mr Hisham? it's not a rocket science, is it? Wat's past is history and it's your choice to create history or continue to live with history. It's always not too late to reform the PDRM. Pls look at HK, Singapore, etc. CHANGE OR BE CHANGED! Rakyat is here to change you... :-)

Why do you blame others for your incompetence in running the Ministry? Of course, in the eyes of the people the PDRM is irresponsible and bad. How else can you deny the peoples' perception when the top Chief of the Police is working hand-in-glove with such people as Tunku, the Ahlong King, How else could you deny the peoples' perception when a murder case involving high profile UMNO leaders are being covered-up by non others then the Police themselves?

Stop being stupid. . ., or are you really stupid?

The thing is, we demonized the police because they are corrupted, tell me, anyone here in MT has not been approach by a police officer and ask for some 'duit kopi' to get urself of the hook? I had such experience, and it was not even an offence from us but of course the power of the police, we just dont have any say in it. What the police say will always be true and you are always on the wrong. And most of my friends in KL that I ever talked too all had such experince. Police here in Malaysia are mostly corrupted.

The high crime rate is not because we demonized the police, it is because the POLICE ARE CORRUPTED! And we demonized them because POLICE ARE CORRUPTED! Bodoh punye menteri.

Dear Hishammuddin,

You obviously have your brains in your backside. The continuing use of the Police force to keep UMNO in power and not to keep crime down gives the citizens no confidence in either the Police Force or UMNO. When your promotions are based on loyalty to UMNO and not on crime busting skills, you cannot expect the citizens to have any confidence in the Police force.

In fact, we don't even have confidence in you to begin with. You have retained a clearly retarded chief of police, you have allowed the prison slaying to go on without charging the murderers in the Police force, you have used the Police to exert unlawful force against the opposition and against the citizens, you have selectively prosecuted opposition members, you shield your cow head protesters and the list goes on. Clearly, you are incompetent and also without balls to make tough decisions. Your analytical skills required as a leader is lacking - this is proven by your current statement and backed up by your numerous non-decisions in the past - clearly set you apart from the normal morons in UMNO - you fall further below the line.

The increase in crime is a symptom of the lack of governance and leadership by example. If the Federal government can breach its own Petroleum Act, the Constitution, the rights of the States, infringe the rights of the people, selectively prosecute opponents and shield friends, change the goal post at every turn, then what is the difference between the Federal government and the normal criminal? There is no longer the moral force of government governing the consenting through the rule of law. This country is following by example the antics of the Federal government. Don't blame the law abiding citizens for demonizing criminal acts OR equating the lawlessness of the criminals with that of the Federal government.

Oh, how more stupid can our Home Minister be? Imagine blaming the poor performance of the police force on public perception! If the top cops had not been indulging in politics and spent more commitment on their work, even small time social problems like snatch-thievery would not have become so prevalent and big time business in the country! And the mat rempits, why had it taken so long to haul them up?

It sticks! Their lack of conviction to do the proper things shows! Quick to bodek UMNO and quick to go against the opposition is a glaring weakness of the police force. Their actions are not consistent with what they say. How then can one expect the people to praise the police force?

Come on, Hishammuddin, you don’t even want to look at things as it should be look at and have the cheek to openly blame the escalating social problems on the people. Be wise, in the final analysis, it is still the people who decides and says who and what’s wrong with the systems and that also includes you! You have failed miserably to help the police’s poor credibility in this case!

The High Crime rate is causing the demonisation of the police!

High crime rate implies police not doing good enough job. Or even implies police are working with criminals for personal gain. Coupled with accidents and political forces, the police have a uphill task to set things straight. Police must not only do a good job, but must also be seen to be doing a good job!
