I have no disrespect for the Malay culture which is beautiful. We can all learn a thing or two from Malay adat. However, I do hold a grudge against the deliberate extermination of one’s own heritage. I further find it offensive when Indian Muslims, in their eagerness to convert, use Machiavellian means to identify themselves as Malay. It demonstrates a lack of dignity and self-worth.

By Mohd Ikhram Merican

“How shall a man escape from his ancestors, or draw off from his veins the black drop which he drew from his father’s or mother’s life?” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

For some time now I’ve felt that the Indian Muslim or Mamak community at large suffers from a pitiful cultural and identity crisis. Being a Muslim of Indian origin, I have first-hand experience with the dilemma afflicting this community that has contributed so much to the culture, politics, and economy of Malaysia for well over a few centuries. I also worry that so many members of this, my community, are shedding their identity by becoming over-zealous converts.

Some of the offensive and snide remarks by an individual with clear Indian ancestry at the on-going UMNO General Assembly have motivated me to finally pen this letter.

My ancestral beginnings in Malaysia start with my great-grandfather, K.K Daud, in Penang in the early 20th century; although I suspect earlier generations were already making trade excursions to the Malay Peninsula. My grandfather, D Mohamed Ibraheem, born in India, was brought to study at the Methodist Boys School in Penang. He was a scholar, a sportsman, and a gentleman. These exact traits, decades later, were to become my obligation at my Alma Mater, the Victoria Institution.

My grandfather was a linguist of sorts. He learned Latin, was sufficiently proficient in Malay, and a master in English and Tamil. All of his children bore a combination of Tamil and Muslim names, a testament to his pride as a Tamilian and an unashamed celebration of his Indian roots. He worked hard, contributed to Penang’s economy, was a well respected member of his community, and raised a good family. For all intents and purposes, he was well assimilated into the fabric of Penangite society. He did not have to shed his cultural identity to do this.

My father and his generation, like their preceding generations, spoke excellent Tamil. Most of them were privileged to have an English education. A significant number of them have gone on to becoming prominent captains of industry in Malaysia and abroad. None of them coveted handouts from the government or needed to shake-off their “Indian-ess” to progress in Malaysia. It was never an option. Their parents worked hard to educate them.

My generation does not speak Tamil as well as the previous generations. Most of us speak English or Malay. Suddenly it has become important to be seen as practicing Malay culture. Article 160 of the Constitution states that a “Malay” is a person who professes the religion of Islam, habitually speaks the Malay language, conforms to Malay custom and -

  1. was before Merdeka Day born in the Federation or in Singapore or born of parents one of whom was born in the Federation or in Singapore, or was on that day domiciled in the Federation or in Singapore; or
  2. is the issue of such a person;

Many Indian Muslims have used or would like to use this provision to “convert”.

Naturally, I feel sick when I read of the charades of UMNO politicians, academicians, and community leaders masquerading as Malays, spewing hatred against other races, sometimes against their own roots. Even when they’re challenged as to their real identity, they shamelessly defend their false Malay roots. For some, Tamil is still spoken in whispers, in the privacy of their homes, like it were a “dirty” parlance.

Why? For special rights? For economic handouts? My grandfather worked very, very hard for providence. So did the men of his generation. The early Indian Muslim traders who came to these shores were an industrious lot who earned their bread. They contributed to Malaysia’s rich heritage without becoming cultural orphans. They cherished their roots. Hardship and experience polished them. It earned them monopolies in certain trades that last till today.

This legacy is being destroyed. A culture and heritage is disappearing only to be replaced by a false sense of security. In the process, the Indian Muslims are offending not only their own race and the Chinese, but many Malays too. In the long run, we as a community will isolate ourselves from our roots and the nation in which we want so much to assimilate with.

“Distinguished ancestors shed a powerful light on their descendants, and forbid the concealment either of their merits or of their demerits.” - Gaius Sallustius Crispus

I am against race and identity protection. It is the same basis that there are still malaysian chinese and malaysian indian. Mamaks or no, we are all malaysian and should be uphold the rights of every malaysian and not just a race. You can practice your ethnic culture but when it comes to your rights, it should be equal rights for every malaysian regardless of whether it is pribumi, prabumi,or 1st generation immigrtant, as long as they are given a blue ic, born in malaysia with at least 1 parent is citizen of malaysia, he or she should have every right as any other malaysian regardless of race and religion.

Well said. Its a curse on oneself and one's descendent to discard and dishonour one's God given racial background no matter what. These are the real PARIAHS.

If God had wanted, He would have given the person's father the grace of being born in that particular racial group. How can man play God and change his racial origin ?.

Dear Mohd Ikhram Merican...

That is a magnificient piece you wrote straight from the heart, syabas.

I do read your intellectual & enlightening Blog (Kadaram)

It all goes back to Cultural History, lineage, upbringing, education, critical thinking & hard work to make a person “Educated , Cultured & successful”

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education - Martin Luther King, Jr.

I am not interested in power for power's sake, but I'm interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good - Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I further find it offensive when Indian Muslims, in their eagerness to convert, use Machiavellian means to identify themselves as Malay. It demonstrates a lack of dignity and self-worth….”

Yes indeed, those “Pseudo- Wannabe” who have the “Kiasu” Mentality…short cut to their agendas..
Indian/Chinese Convert > Muslim Convert > Bumiputra Status > More Melayu than a Malay…

In truth KIMMA should be a component party of UMNO like MIC, MCA, etc…BUT

For whatever reason, the UMNOputra Leaders decided to include them as direct UMNO members

And end up with some who are the New Monsters insulting the Party, the Peace loving citizens & this nation.

Talking about “dignity and self-worth….”

I would like to share this very fine example of one of Malaysia’s noble & honourable statesman…

An Indian Muslim, Founding member of MIC since it was founded in 1946, was the former permanent chairman of MIC.

He had received the Tokoh Maal Hijrah award in 1989.

He is non other than SENATOR TAN SRI DATO S.O.K. UBAIDULLA, D.P.M.S. J.M.N.

Everywhere in the world throughout history there are people that crave the easier life accorded by unequal advantages accorded by the systems they live in.

Those mamaks are merely taking advantage of the prevailing system in Malaysia just like what your forefathers probably did after Aurangzeb imposed his decree for non-muslims to pay higher poll-tax (than what muslims paid) with the expressed intent of spreading Islam and suppressing other faiths. Indians that could not afford that tax conveniently converted to escape it. It was just a case of if you cannot beat them, join them.

Today there are fools who do not know all that that go round claiming that the religion's large following is proof of the religion's 'greatness'.

Shabash Sdr Ikhram,
You're the rare few who's prepared to call a spade a spade Given your ancestors' history of diligence, it is most shameful that Malays' laziness and fondness of blaming others for their mistakes are the very traits which your Mamak friends have adopted from them. Bank Bumiputra, where almost every other staff was MANAGER, and subsequently failed, was testimony of the Malays' unworkable mindset. GOOSTEE.

A good, prospective and harmonious multi-racial Malaysia has been heavily damaged under the leadership of a Mamak who completely lacks dignity and self-worth. For decades, this Mamak had not let go of his vicious bite in advancing racism to cover up his ancestral transformation and intentionally promoted his confusing and misguided notion that Malaysia is still Tanah Melayu even after Independence was achieved 54 years ago!

Achieving Independence in means the citizens of the country are all Malaysians and this government must move away from the evil ways of that racist Mamak who had completely lost his dignity and self-worth. All Malaysians must be equally treated as Malaysians, none as second class Malaysians!

Mamak Mahathir remains the misguided spirtual head of racism in Malaysia just as Osama was the misguided spiritual head of terrorism in the world. Racism will lose its strength in Malaysia just like terrorism had lost its strength in the world when Osama's ashes were finally sprinkled at sea! The big question remaining for and eagerly awaited by Malaysians now is when can Malaysia finally free herself from the Mamak menace, that recalcitrant Mamak, who had completely lost his dignity and self worth to mislead Malays and created the enormous social troubles now facing the country!

AND to Mohd Ikhram Merican... we are very proud of you as our fellow Malaysian and upright countryman! Kudos to you and Best Regards.

Atansian, the Muslim population of China is about 10 percent of the total China population which is about the same of India(if your statistics of India is correct) that is 150 millions muslims in China versus the total population of Malaysia of 26 million of all races and religion, being Muslim as a majority 'race' in the Malaysia!

Islam arrived in China more or less 100 years after Prophet Mohamad's death that means not less than 800 or more years earlier than umoOno's Islam!

Thank YOU.

CAn I also add that only in Malaysia an amazing , unexplained phenomena or miracle or a delusion is happening. Suddenly after embracing Islam the DNA changes. and adacradaba..the convert becomes fully Malay...pisses and fartrs in Malay and shits in Malay. And then like you said he starts grabbing and demanding the 30% . This leaves the real Malays having to share the cake with these c**kraoches. Now the ultimate Mamak who started this frenzy is the Interlok Kerala Pariah dog who is the cause of Malaysia's polarization...The dog who stole the Malay rights.

There are 150 million Muslims in India, and about 22 million Muslims in China.

Indian and Chinese Muslims in Malaysia should be proud of this heritage which historically goes back much further than Malay Muslims.

It is this realisation of insignificance and smallness that explains the seige mentality of some Malays which UMNO leaders unethically exploits.

A very heart-felt rendition of the sad state of affairs in Malaysian politics. The original Mamaks and their decendents are in fact very smart people having hundreds of years of trading experience in the SEA region. They were the ones partly or mainly responsible for bringing Islam to this region as seen by the many similar cultural influences of the Malays such as the berstanding ceremonies, etc.

Therefore, it is very easy for Indians to be assimulated into the Malay entity by just converting. I guess it is a matter of survival by all means After all, it is not illegal to convert and marry a Malay and become a Malay overnight. The problem boils down to the loose definition in the Constitution. The real Malays are not protected.

Until the 60s, ALL Indian Muslim I know always identify themselves as Indian Muslim. After NEP, and as more and more special privileges, subsidies and quotas are created for bumiputras, more and more Indian Muslims decide to identify, even demand that they are Malay, and therefore bumiputra.

Is it coincidence, or is it the smell and taste of easy money that has made them wanting to be Malay? I have been to many parts of the world and to me, mamaks who proclaim themselves to be Malay are among the most disgusting group of humans i have ever come across.

Dear Mohd Ikhram Merican, you are like 'the last of the Mohicans'. A rare breed indeed. RPK had always condemned those who wrote insulting words as racists on the Mamaks but it seemed like the majority of the Mamaks deserved these insults with their uncouth and primitive behavior. The boycott on Mamak stalls and shops will continue as long as these hooligans continue to insult and incite others. Let the other sane Mamaks take action against their own to stop this madness once and for all so that we can start patronizing Mamak shops again.

Finally you have spoken,it must have taken a lot of courage only a true tamilian could do that.
Its a known fact of the manipulation of the article160 created to suit the Grand Mamak.
Nobody worries or questions others interest in any religion as guaranteed in the constitution but by falsely accepting and practicing others culture as their own is like wolf becoming a sheep.
These is prevalent not only with the mamaks but also with the indian christian community who tends to be and act more like the whites.
They unable to distinguish whats religion and culture and been brain-washed by their leader to act in such a way.
Thus ones true identity is lost and whats left is falsity.

For these are the people who chose to convert but harbour a personal ambition be it for personal or otherwise and not so much for the loves of islam. If one cannot be proud of his or her own race and family's roots then it is no better than being a scum! A typical example is that troublemaker Ghani in Penang. We are given the impression that here in Malaysia where a Muslim is a Malay and a Malay is a Muslim and this is where the confusion lies. But how does one went about changing his race just by changing his religion is simply beyond me!

Dear Mohd Ikhram Merican,

It is refreshing indeed to read of an Indian Muslim expressing sane and reasoned thoughts about the wayward people of his own community.

The bad impression and behaviour shown by the Umno Mamaks affects all Malaysians and Indian Muslims as rightly alluded to in your letter.

Therefore, just as the awakened and patriotic Malays and Chinese are attacking the plundering and treacherous Umno Malays and MCA Chinese in our effort of saving the country, it would be more heartening if more decent Indian Muslims like you could find the time and courage to stand up for yourselves against those Umno Mamaks who are offending everyone with their nonsensical politics.

Donno who you are, Mohd Ikhram but it is so refreshing to know what you stand for. Time to start a United Mamak National Organization for yourself and all mamaks who are proud of their heritage. It should have been a unique culture like that of the Baba's. But too bad, the cheapo pseudo malay mamaks have soiled the reputation of all mamaks. They have also managed to con their way into umno when everybody was not looking.

As for the ethnic Malays, don't you think it is time to kick them shit heads out of umno and keep umno for the malays? If them cheapo mamaks want to be in umno, they can start a united mamak nincompoop organization for themselves. How the mamaks have destroyed the genuine Malay culture that we used to respect so much during the times of Tengku Abdul Rahman.

What I see these so called Malays and so called Muslims talking and doing tells me that something is very wrong with these people. They seem uneducated, uncultured, rude, arrogant, corrupt, liars, shameless, blind, and mindless.
Somehow they seem drunk with daily indoctrination and rituals that they performed with pride. Either they are filled with pride or deceived that they are heroes and serving a right cause. Therefore we must ask, seek and knock at every doors or be deceived. For this world belongs to the dark king.

There is no issue if Mamak or Chinese Muslims want to become Malays and if the Malays accept them with open arms. It become an issue to the rest of the non Malays citizens only when they (converted Malays) started attacking the non Malays. Ah Tee is a very good example of new Malays who try to proove to Malays that they are more Malay than original Malays.
