By Mariam Mokhtar

Instead of engaging with the rakyat, Najib has ordered the city closed to NGOs and political reformists. He has conveniently flown to Europe, like a coward.

Malaysia’s leaders are afraid that the country will experience its own Tahrir Square. The Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is threatened by the Bersih demand for electoral reform and the rakyat has been energised.

Najib’s plans to outsmart Bersih have come to nothing. His idea to include the Agung in averting tension, has not endeared Najib to the public.

Najib’s co-conspirators have accused Bersih of a possible bloodbath. So called evidence has been planted to implicate Bersih in an uprising.

Several people in Malaysia, including social activists and opposition politicians, have been arrested and the government is now claiming that the ‘Bersih 2’ March for Democracy is being financed by foreign elements, with the intention of toppling the government.

The crisis is so deep that the government has declared that the wearing of yellow T-shirts is illegal, as it represents support for Bersih.

Hundreds of thousands of Malaysians are prepared to march peacefully to support clean and fair elections on 9th July. On that day, solidarity marches in America, Australia, London and Korea, will also be held.

After the first Bersih march in 2007, the performance of the Opposition at the 2008 general election saw them take over five of the thirteen Malaysian states and reduce the two-thirds majority of the government.

If Najib and the Election Commission have nothing to fear, why will they not engage with Bersih?

Western governments look away whilst the government of Malaysia declares the pro-democracy march illegal and the police arrest people wearing yellow T-shirts bearing the ‘Bersih 2’ logo and detain social activists and opposition politicians.

Umno / BN is in meltdown and reacting out of panic.

The Arab Spring in the middle-east managed to remove despotic and corrupt leaders from power. Encouraged by this show of public strength, Malaysians are determined to change their autocratic government.

No one in Malaysia is asking for a military intervention from the west, but there has been little international condemnation of Razak’s government.

The Obedient Wives Club is seen as more newsworthy than the corrupt and scandal ridden government of Malaysia.

This is probably because Malaysia is seen as a moderate Muslim country and so the west is courting Malaysia in the fight against Islamic terrorists and fundamentalist Muslim nations.

There are no suicide bombings or fighting in Malaysia, and western governments are prepared to turn a blind eye and ignore the injustices and human rights abuses of the Malaysian government towards its own people.

Perhaps the west sees Malaysia as a cheap source of much needed commodities like crude oil, timber and electrical components.

Malaysia is also a voracious purchaser of defence equipment and is eager to set-up twinning arrangements with British universities.

Furthermore, companies linked to the Malaysian government have made significant investments in real-estate in the United Kingdom.

Ever since independence was granted by the British in 1957, the Malays have held the upper hand in Malaysian politics, as agreed in the constitution.

Since the term of office held by Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, race and religion have been used as weapons to divide the people.

The non-Malays are not normally granted scholarships and places for them in the civil service and armed forces are limited. On the other hand, the Malays enjoy many privileges, including a generous subsidy when they buy houses. Malaysians of Chinese and Indian descent are termed illegal immigrants, and their contributions to the birth of the nation, overlooked.

In elections, there has been massive vote rigging, gerrymandering, abuse of postal votes and phantom voting including the buying and manipulation of votes. The Electoral Commission has not been able to discharge its duties and none of the complaints have been acted upon or investigated conscientiously.

The military budget increases annually but has not been spent wisely. Armed forces personnel, who speak in confidence, have expressed incredulity that millions have been squandered on military hardware from America, Britain, France and Russia, thus making maintenance and spare parts a logistical nightmare.

The purchase of three Scorpene submarines in 2002 has attracted international attention only because money politics and the murder of a Mongolian model were linked to the defence minister, Najib Abdul Razak, who is now Prime Minister.

Comparisons of the lavish spending, from the public purse by Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, have been made with the former President of Tunisia, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and his wife Leila.

Malaysians are aware that the west only sees the good side of the country; it has beautiful beaches and exotic food. Few foreigners know the ‘other’ Malaysia.

Bersih’s leaders have been subject to death threats and abuse. Many face arrest. The scale of panic and incredulity is such that even a poet laureate was brought in for questioning because of a few lines in one of his poems.

A circular was handed to the Malaysian students department in Adelaide, Australia, warning students that if they were to join the rally on 9th July, they would face severe punishments.

Malaysia is under siege from its own government and its citizens worldwide, are being threatened with reprisals if they support the call for democratic and electoral reform.

The rakyat is wholly behind Bersih and is prepared to defend their rights to proper governance, in a peaceful manner.

Najib on the other hand, is nowhere to be seen. Next week, the Pope should refuse to grant Najib an audience for running away from Malaysia and for abandoning her citizens at this crucial point in her history. The colour yellow suits Najib to a ‘T’.

PM is having a meeting to ask the Pope if it is true that Christians are attemting to take over Malaysia. At the same time he will be asking if the Pope is sending money to Bersih as well. After that he will be back and to Malaysia and says that he got the information from the horses mouth himself that Bersih got all the funds from Christians organisation around the world. This is Canland, the land of politoons.

"Western governments look away whilst the government of Malaysia declares the pro-democracy march illegal and the police arrest people wearing yellow T-shirts bearing the ‘Bersih 2’ logo..."-yes, they are all sound and fury for the ideals of democracy but when it matters they turn the blind, deaf and dumb monkey routine!!
My fellow Malaysians, we must take our destiny into our hands, for ours is a reasonable demand - electoral reforms for free and fair elections!!
If not we, then who?
All of us who have our nation's welfare close to our hearts must take at least that 2 steps in solidarity with those brave folks at the Bersih2.0 peace walk in KL tomorrow at 2 pm.
Please stop whatever u are doing then, and take that 2 peaceful steps for electoral reforms.

How can a coward flee and be allowed to flee?
All we ask is for a transparent election.
WE want the re-delineation exercise based on citizens per Parliament Member.
WE do not want postal votes. We do not know where their constituency is.
If they cannot come back and vote..we do not want them.
Stop dumping postal votes last minute to win.
We know you know that the number of registered voters sometimes do not come..so you dump the votes here to win to tally these numbers.

MORE TIME FOR THE CITIZENS TO CHOOSE DURING CAMPAIGNS..not idiots like Bung Dung Moktar or Toyol or Derus or Ibrahim Ali..

ALL WE ASK IS TRANSPARENCY.AND FAIR PLAY..

Najib may regret he ever left this country in this hour of crisis! For this may be a repeat of the episode experienced by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman. Then Tunku only left KL for Kedah and yet it had to happen! He lost his premiership! Should the Bersih rally on July 9, 2011 Saturday turn into a blood-path, possibly caused by his hardliners UMNO 'brothers' in or aligned to the government, intentionally or otherwise, he would find his PM post likewise taken over straightaway by his ambitious Deputy.

Play coward Najib and you will likely lose everything this time! No Malaysian will ever forgive you as PM for deserting them when you should have taken firm and correct measures to overcome your hardliner and unrepentant colleagues in the Cabinet! Running away at this hour is both stupid and irresponsible! There is no excuse! When you can shorten your trip overseas recently to return to Malaysia over a landslide, there is no reason for you not to stay now and face Malaysians over possible blood-path threatening the whole nation!

Behave like a true PM, a Malaysian PM, confront your misguided colleagues, throw them behind bars if you must and you will find the reasonable Rakyat running to your side. Turn the tide and be brave to create positive Malaysian history! Otherwise, the winds of change will continue to take over and the peoples' power, with sacrifices, will sweep you all off your feet! Stay and face the music either way, Mr PM! Do it for Malaysians!

Mariam is right. So far no western country and USA have comeout to condemn the arrest of innocent people. If you have the chance to read this book, 'Sleeping with the Devils', you will know that Mariam Mokhtar has hit the nail on its head. In the said book, it details how the US leaders look the other way when sme Arab leaders were corrupt . Why is it so? Simply because the US needs oil more, never mind the wrong doings of the leaders. Similarly for Malaysia.

The Sultan of Perak has already set the trend for the sacking of the MB (read IIUM Law Prof Abdul Aziz Bari). Now the King can do the same by sacking of the PM while he is away by seeking the advice of the acting PM, namely Muhiddyin (Muhhydin as PM??? might be not so good an idea!!!!). Nevertheless, after Muhyddin is PM, the KINg can then sack Muhyiddin when he is away by getting the advice of Mukhriz as Acting PM. Then finding Mukhriz real dumb the King can appoint Mahatir as the new PM. The people can then revolt and hang him in the confluence of Sg.Gombak and Sg. Klang where we can release some piranhas to feed on him. Hopefully he lives through all this.

IN PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS AND FREEDOM FROM A TYRANT REGIME

Folks,
We are going to have a peaceful march and rally on Saturday. Hope everything is ok. But just in case to protect you from being gassed or have been gassed, here are some tips;-

I have read about some blogs describing youth around the world improvise anti-gas face mask by soaking the face mask or bandanna (large handkerchief) with apple vinegar (or apple cider). You can get both the face mask and apple cider from the pharmacy or sundry shop.

This article I found in Freedommanual.blogspot.com also informed us about using onion (instead of salt?) as a protection from tear gas. Break an onion and spread some of its juice under your nose if you whiff some oncoming gas in the air (remember, gas move according to wind direction) and got sprayed with gas.

(Source: http://freedommanual.blogspot....r-gas.html). Excerpts: -

1. Improvised Gas Mask
Find a bandanna (or large handkerchief), or a rag: something to wrap around your head made of strong material. Now find some charcoal. Smash up the charcoal. Soak the bandanna/rag in water. Line one side of the bandanna/rag with charcoal dust. Fold bandanna or rag over and wrap around your nose and mouth.

2. Onions as Protection Against Tear Gas (alternative to salt?):
If you don’t have any vinegar or water-soaked bandannas, carry an onion with you (a small one will do). If gassed, break it in half and sniff it, and get it close to your eyes….it greatly reduces the irritation in the eyes and nasal cavity. I Learned that from a photojournalist in Gaza.

Get each friend to carry an onion in their pocket before you head out.

3. How to Safely Get Rid of Tear Gas – DO NOT APPLY WATER (?)!
Do NOT wash your face with water if you suffer tear gas. You should not wet your skin: it increases the effect of the tear gas. Instead, apply vinegar or lemon juice to the skin in order to get rid of the effect of the tear gas. Cloths with some apple vinegar or pure lemon juice are very useful in riots. You can press some lemon in a plastic bottle before going to march. So you can wet your mask with lemon juice (or vinegar), and it will decrease the effect of tear gas.

However, can someone enlighten us on no. 3 as it suggest not to use water (?). Perhaps the water is used only to wet the bandanna, handkerchief or rag to cover your mouth before the tear gas strikes you.

Anybody out there can give a better alternative?

Good luck, and see you on July 9!
