Where the fuck were the Pakatan Rakyat leaders?

This is the reason why we should not blindly vote for Pakatan Rakyat. As much as we may want change and would like to see Barisan Nasional ousted, Pakatan Rakyat has to earn our votes, not expect to get it without any effort. I want to start by demanding an apology from those 20 Pakatan Rakyat Parliamentarians who are earning their salary without working for it. Then, and only then, will we consider whether they are worthy of our votes.

Fright for BN as Budget passed by 66-63 votes

It was fright night for the BN as the national Budget was passed by a wafer-thin 66-63 majority in Parliament last night.

That’s 48 per cent attendance for the BN MPs and a 77 per cent turnout for the Pakatan reps.

Najib and Ong Tee Keat reportedly had to rush to Parliament to vote – and this was for their “1Malaysia Prosperity for All” Budget.

The Malaysian Insider has the story here (Najib’s budget passed by a narrow 66-63 vote).

It just goes to show how much importance these missing MPs place in Parliament when they can be absent during such a crucial debate and vote.

Tapah MP saves the day for BN

Tapah member of parliament M Saravanan turned saviour for the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday with his vote ensuring the approval of the Supply Bill 2010, better known as Budget 2010.

The drama began late last night when the Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia called for voting for the passing of the bill, deemed to be an important component of the government's expenditure for next year.

The ruling coalition managed to get the bill approved with a one-vote majority, 64 against 63 votes of the opposition bloc, thanks to Saravanan's late-minute vote.

"I had a function to attend in the city last night. During the event, I got a call from someone in Parliament asking me to rush to Dewan and that a voting is being conducted in the Supply Bill.

"It was about 10.40pm when I managed to relieve myself from the function and rushed to Parliament.

"I was in the nick of the time as the Speaker allowed me to cast my vote. To my relief later I learnt that the Bill was passed by a single vote majority," Saravanan, who is also Federal Territories and Urban Well-being deputy minister, told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Najib was called back too

He also thanked his lucky stars, because the function he attended was close-by to the Parliament, enabling him to rush to the Dewan Rakyat within minutes after getting the alert.

The failure to pass the Bill, which is basically the 2010 government budget, would have resulted in the ruling coalition needing to retable the entire budget, resulting in throwing a spanner in the works of development projects planned by the ruling government.

It would also have been as major embarrassment for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who were both in the Dewan Rakyat until late yesterday, as this could have been the first budget not passed by Parliament in the nation's history.

Both Najib and Muhyiddin too had to rush to the Parliament to ensure the budget was approved in their favour.

MP Teresa Kok has explained the reason for her absence in the budget voting session. Go to her teresakok.com to read more. To err is human, to forgive is divine. I personally can not accept the reason for her absence as stated in the blog but am forgiving her because she was honest to admit that it ws sher choice to honour the Sultan of Selangor over the importance of passing, or rather objecting this budget. We have yet to hear anything from the other 20 MPs and beieve me this will not go away until they explain themselves. We will decide at the next GE for sure.

To my relief later I learnt that the Bill was passed by a single vote majority,"

Can you believe this?!!!!

And PR wants us to believe in their struggle for a change? This is the result of PR's complacency. Keep up this lackadaisical attitude and PR will lose its support and will be history.

This is why I never really liked PR - I would rather one opposition under one banner and vote for them - PKR if they stood alone without the others existing and splitting votes.

If elective representatives from both side of teh divide do not have the time to attend parliament, they should just resign and allow those who have the time and have the needs of the electorate in their hearts to represent us. Their absence truly reflects that these lawmakers have their own agendas.

Sun Line says to all who keep bashing Pakatan FT/Selangor reps who were absent from the Budget vote. If you really want to know, many of them were hosting a function for HRH Sultan of Selangor in conjunction with his birthday. Do you really want them to create a scandal by walking out on HRH in the middle of a dinner hosted for him? Think before you criticise la.

popuri,

77% of the Opposition MPs were there to vote. That is high compared to the low figure of 48% of Government MPs.

I see nothing horribly wrong in some of the MPs being absent - RPK being RPK is just making more noises than he should and all of you are jumping on his bandwagon simply because RPK hollered!

MPs have duties in their own constituencies. The Opposition MPs' lack of financial support makes things a lot harder for them in carrying out their duties. Many of them work late into the evenings. Give them a break!

No one expect them to be there 24/7. But by not attending such important event. What sort of leaders do you think they'll make? This shows that they don't give a damn about the country's affairs.

U know... He was late and yet he was allowed to cast his vote... I don't think he would say the same if votes were gaining for the opposition MP, or that person requesting to vote is from the opposition... So... even if all Opposition and BN MPs are in, Opposition will still loose... So it's a "no use" anger vented towards the opposition.

Lets say if Opposition MP's number exceeded BN's MP... U think the vote will be passed? I don't think so... I'm sure the vote will be re-called again and again... Unless of course if the BN MP's were overseas... They'll either "tangguh" the proceeding, or... re-read the budget again...

Then this time, they will ensure all BN MPs are around when they start voting again.

So... Fair or not? I still put mu thumb down for them...

Yet you all expect MPs to be available 24/7 :-( Sheesh!

An apology is not enough, .Since they are absent from work duties, a warning letter should be given to them and their salary deducted for the days absent from work. After three such warnings they are automatically dismiss from their posts. Its only fair that they like us working for a salary should be given the same treatment as any body else. Right?

Actually this lack of supporters for both BN and PR are the deep rooted culture in Malaysia for many years. Previously, it went by unnoticed as BN outnumbered oppositions (no PR then) many folds. BN will always got their bill passed hands down. How ever, there is no excuse for PR for not attending the so important Bill for the nation. and worse still this is the 2nd time PR missed it. However, I do not wished that PR object the Bill just for the sake of objection (pardon me for my ignorance as I did not quite follow this issue).
Next time, not only full attendance but do it quietly - should not let Nazri know that something is cooking!!! Just go for a drink somewhere near the parlimen and show up just in time to vote. Some times you must know pretend to play dead and strike it when their guard is down. Good luck PR.

Guys, stopping the budget may not be as good as it sounds. While this is a good lesson for PR MPs and serves as a dress rehearsal for more important legislation to come, stopping the budget may just be giving an excuse for the BN to accuse PR as show stoppers and destructive politicians who wish to screw things up for the sake of screwing things up. This enables the BN to put the blame on PR for a lousy budget.

I stand corrected by anyone who can show that it is a benefit for the PR to stop the budget.

I feel there is no necessity to whip up hopes.... before the votes are taken, the clerks and officers of parliament would have given the parliamentary attendance and the whereabouts of BN MPs vis-a-vis PR MPs to the BN whip and the speaker.

If the motion could be defeated, the Speaker would have, in his own absolute discretion which is unquestionable by anyone, including the courts, adjourned the meeting to the next day.

Much as I share the sentiments of RPK, I still think we should use our votes wisely and not be overly emotionally in action. Opposition MPs do not have a common discipline. Since we already have a formal coalition for the PR, what we need is for the position of a Chief Whip for opposition MPs. Pushing for this is a much better solution than casting our votes for UMNO in retaliation for the disappointing discipline of opposition MPs.

PR missed an opportunity to make a huge impact ! sad...

Having said all that, it did scare the daylight out of BN. We need someone like Nazri in PR to kick some butts in PR.

TheMalaysiaInsider's reports:

"Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, stressed that BN lawmakers have to be more careful and must take this matter seriously.

“I think now they have to be careful because nothing can be taken for granted now. This is a different parliament and I hope the MPs will take their jobs seriously on both sides. So I hope this a lesson for all.

This is the second time and this is more frightening because it involves the Budget bill. So I hope this matter will awaken the MPs especially from Barisan Nasional so they seriously take their responsibility to attend the parliament,” he told reporters in the Parliament lobby here.

The BN deputy added that there was nothing he could do as the lawmakers had been informed.

“They are all very important people and they have been informed to attend the Parliament. If they want more than that then maybe they can give me a gun and I will place it near their head. If they don’t come then I will shoot them. That will show that I am doing my work,” he added."

As we know most BN MPs - 52% did not bother to turn up. (we know who you are)

So for the NEXT GE - we need more Pakatan Rakyat Parliamentarians to back up the 23% of those who could not make it due to the the reasons like Gobind , as he is still under the ban or Ibrahim Ali ( he is pro umno ).

Seriously, after looking at the whole picture yet again, unemotionally, it looks like its time to migrate.

With a competent Pakatan Rakyat alternative, Malaysia had hope, not much hope, but enough for us to work on and re-build Malaysia, like a phoenix rising from its ashes. Now that Pakatan Rakyat is so INEPT as to have so many MPs absent at this most important session, things are starting to look hopelessly bleak for Malaysia, for even if we hand the reins of power to Pakatan Rakyat, can INEPT idiots like these run and lead Malaysia ??

Of course Barisan Najis is a no-no for certain as that is the ROAD TO DESTRUCTION by CORRUPTION, but it is starting to look like the Pakatan Rakyat route is also a ROAD to DESTRUCTION through INEPTITUDE & IGNORANCE ... sigh ... will there be a Malaysia in 20 years' time ?? This is to avoid conflict when Parliment and state sitting is running simultaneously. The practice of one eying for state and parliment appears to be one of buying insurance (in case you get defeated in one, you will still have the other).

PLEASE NAME THE 20 PAKATAN MPS and asked them one by one for explanation or justification of their absence.

THEY SHOULD know very well the timetable of BUDGET motions and should re-adjust their personal schedules to suit.

Also remember that being in Opposition, most of them are not busy as compared to the UMNO BN regime MPs who are in power and busy stuffing themselves with the rakyats money through the passing of the budgets which ensures they have big projects for themselves.

SO IT IS ONLY RIGHT THAT FOR ONCE A BUDGET MOTION BE DEFEATED, HOWEVER GOOD IT MAY SEEMS TO THE COUNTRY.. because all these budgets are mostly for the benefits of UMNO and their cronies..

For all my life, i have been hearing budgets after budgets and until now as i write my comments here, I cannot mention any budget that was uselful for me. All i can see is my salary being deducted heavily to taxes, something like 3 months salary per year, the money that i really need for myself.

RPK,
I think we the Rakyat have to step up our pressure and start to think about a 3rd force. You see, in purchasing we are required to ask for 3 quotations. This is because if we have only one, or two quotations, we cannot really ensure sufficient competition among the suppliers. Therefore we the customers run a higher risks being taken advantage of. Worse still if the two suppliers who quote know each other and play us out.

Similarly to ensure the Rakyat's interest are well protected, we cannot rely only on two parties, especially so when democracy is immature and the MPs do not yet have first-class mentality like in developed nations. So, I think we need a third force. Even Britain has their Lib Dem, apart from Tories and Labour.

Sir, please can provide your thoughts on my suggestion above.

If you think we voted for you to be absent and "makan gaji buta" . . ., you are dead wrong!

At last some light has dawned.

We cannot blindly give our support and votes to Pakatan, and it was not just because of non attendance in the parliament. That may be a trivial matter. Pakatan has come to take our support and votes for granted, thinking we have no other choice. That seriously needs to be addressed. In fact, we have to make that clear to Pakatan right away.

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the 2nd time this happened. And it's leaving much more than a bad taste in the mouth; those buggers responsible deserve to be vomited on. The Whip of Pakatan must answer for his obliviousness and ineffectiveness.

This reflects badly on their coordination, seriousness and strategic planning so important in the world of politics. Are those absentees really representing their constituents or are they just passers-by?

Sigh!!! What are the Pakatan leaders doing???

PR is not even ruling the government yet and these spastic people are already behaving like their BN counterparts skipping parliament sessions. Watch out they may secretly harbour sentiments for BN all along. They had better have a good excuse otherwise first kick them out before we can even think of voting BN out later. These will be the same guys who will bring about the downfall of PR government in future as the writing is on the wall.

Maybe you could be kind enough to publish the names of those twenty irresponsible MPs,
so that we voters can decide whether to give them our votes the next elections.

DAP, PAS and PKR should make it mandatory for all their YBs to attend every parliament ary session. They are paid to attend it. They can claim their accomodation, transport and food. Their is no reason for them not to attend.

To PR leaders, dont underestimate us. We're constatntly watching what you do and what you say. Be warned.

From now on, let's watch them closely. For those who play truant, let's not give them our vote the next time. We must also insist that Pakatan do not field them in future. What a bloody waste. It would have been a victory to savour for a long time if the budget was rejected. Let's have the names of those lazy morons.

As highlighted. It is regrettable that the PR Mps who should have been there to thwart any majority by the BN as slim as one would have turned them into heros. But as it is they are being scorned for their absence at the voting.

The PR MPs should have been more responsible and concentrate on the well being of the rakyat for which they have been elected. All the PR MPs should be remorseful of their carelessness and say sorry for their action to have betrayed the trust.

How irresponsible can these 20 PR reps be. No excuses if they are in the country & not trerribly sick. Don't they know the budget is being discussed. This kind of tidak apa attitude would never see PR in power. I sure hope someone can put up the list of missing PR MP's.

Could someone get out the list of those who missed the session?

If it's the MP from my constituency, I'll give her and her boss a call and tell them they won't be getting my vote in the next election unless they change to a new, more responsible candidate.

It's expected behaviour from the BN boors, but I definitely expect better from PR.

I wonder whether the Reformasi Icon was there.

Maybe he had more important things to do like giving lectures in the West quoting eminent Christian and Jewish Philosophers and trying to convince a cynical audience that Islam is compatible with a Secular Democracy and why it is important to have a 'Jeffersonian' Focus.

I also wonder whether the 'Puteri Reformasi' was present in parliament. Her contributions in Parliament and to her constituency in Bangsar and Pantai Dalam has been noteworthy by its absence. What has she been doing?

The twenty irresponsible Pakatan Rakyat Parliamentarians who were absent certainly owe those who voted for them an apology. Don't they know that it is their core business to attend parliament meetings?
