I have been urging Pakatan Rakyat to introduce free wireless Internet in the states they are governing since March 2008 but to no avail. Soon we shall be celebrating the second anniversary of the 12th General Election and still no free wireless Internet in sight.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Raja Petra Kamarudin

Pakatan Rakyat is sleeping and thinks it can win the next general election by doing nothing. I am fed up of trying to convince them about the importance of the Internet to the opposition cause. If Pakatan Rakyat has a death wish then so be it. But just so that I can say “I told you so” when the results of the next general election is announced and Pakatan Rakyat gets sent back to wherever it crawled out from, I want you to see the video presentation below to understand why I am so upset.

Pakatan Rakyat does not seem to understand that it is at a disadvantage when it comes to the mainstream and electronic media and they therefore need the Internet to get their message across to the voters. Ten years ago there were only 280,000 Internet users against eight million voters. Today, the ratio is one-to-one and in time the number of Internet users are going to outnumber the number of voters.

It is plain and simple. He who controls information on the Internet can influence the thinking of the voters. At the height of the Vietnam War, four out of five Americans bought newspapers. Today, it is only two in five because Americans now obtain their information from the Internet.

The number of newspapers sold in Indonesia today is half what it was during the Reformasi days -- at the height of the anti-Suharto era -- in spite of the increase in population. And this is because Indonesians now also depend on the Internet for their news and information.

Rupert Murdock has predicted that by 2030 the print newspaper would be totally replaced by the Internet. So Pakatan Rakyat ignores the Internet at its own peril. Let us just hope that on 19 December 2009 the delegates to the First Pakatan Rakyat Convention will discuss this issue and do something about the matter.

Murdock said by 2030, the print media would be replaced by the internet. Good, that will be the end of Utusan. In fact their sales are so bad that they are surviving on UMNO support.smilies/grin.gifsmilies/grin.gifsmilies/grin.gif

RPK rightly says that the internet is a powerful information dissemination tool, and has been asking for pakatan controlled state governments to provide free wireless internet.
This is good, as we need not pay for RM12.00 for a cup of latte to get access, tourists would also be very happy.

I would also like to add, people clamor for a balanced view, that is why The Sun has now just surpassed The Star and the long languishing NST as the most circulated English language daily.
Kudos to The Sun team for their balanced reporting.
I have been an avid reader of Harakah since 1997, but of late their quality of articles has declined, sometimes focusing on trivial issues, ditto Suara Keadilan, DAP rocket circulation is once a month, by the time it hits circulation much of its news items are stale news.
We have had enough BN style MSM reporting, please don't become the opposite side of the same coin.
There is a law under the PPPA that allows state governments to escape the to escape the act but Selangor newsletters are available at obscure places like MPK (Majlis Perbandaran Klang) why not get private funding to circulate it to as many households as possible. What about Penang ? Where is your newsletter ? The rest ?

In 1987 the Mahathir government made an amendment to the PPPA,
that gave sweeping powers to the home minister to ban any publication at his discretion without
judicial review (kinda like an ISA for books)- and guess what ? the home minister was Mahathir himself.
So I find it laughable that former Home Minister cum clown Albar did not even know the powers he was vested with, quoting trivial matters like publishers address, The Home Ministry confiscated a book by public intellectual Dr Farish Noor on the grounds that it did not contain the publisher's or printer's address.

I could see Mahathir banging his head on the wall......

But.........there is a loophole

Section 25(1) of the PPPA states:
“Nothing in this Act shall extend to the publication or making of any
documents or periodical by or for the Federal or any State Government
or any statutory body.”

It is about time that authors like Farish Noor, Zunar and others get the endorsement of Selangor MB Khalid or any other pakatan state governments or at least explore the possibilities of getting such an endorsement, section 25(1) to my understanding overrides even the home ministers discretion, you see way back in 1987 BN never dreamed that 5 state governments would be in opposition hands.

From all the comments above it appears that the majority are in agreement with YM RPK over the frustration of PR not seeing or doing anything to turn the Internet to their advantage. Two readers have offered to donate laptops or computers. To these two good people, syabas for being a little more pragmatic. The only point I would like to raise is that these two good people assumed that the receivers of their donations are already connected to the internet. Thus their admirable efforts may or may not increase the number of net users. As such may I suggest that all the readers who claim to be loyal fans of YM RPK find some way of implementing his idea by sponsoring the registration of just 1 new net user ( one a month or one in so many months, depending on how financially sound the reader is). The sponsorship maybe of a short duration, but who knows during that time what spark might have be ignited which over time may turn into a roaring fire?

After this article. Many West Malaysians are mocking the PKR's too. When previously, all they do is blame it on the Sabahans for not voting PKR. How fast your loyalty changes. So, West Malaysians. May I ask. Who should the Sabahans vote now? You want us to vote PKR before this. Now what? Are we going back to BN? Tell me.

Dear RPK,

PR got no strategy. They rely on you to do the work. Without MT PR would have only 1 state and PKR with be decimated. PR is only a group of lucky guys that happen to be there when the Rakyat decided to make a change.

There are ton of policies offer by PR that are beneficial to the Rakyat and there are even more bad information coming from B-END. The media that transmit it are critical to their success. Yet they do nothing.

You are correct when you said the non-Malay vote UMNO into power. On the other hand, the PR is useless, stupid, got no strategy and waiting for the durian to fall.

PR should focus on the moderated Malay stop wasting your time on cow head and stepping on frog. The animals are not the problem, we need them to make mistake anyway so why stop them. UMNO is at it weakest, their vote derive from moderated Malays folk that is poor, live in the rural/suburban area that have minimum excess to information. I would even give out free PC to their school.

It’s not going to happen unless the rest of the durian falls. PR stops dreaming.

RPK is quite right. The battle is going to be decided by those trying to close the windows of people's mind and those working to open them.

Considering that idiocy involves less endeavor, the odds is already against the latter.

Yes, Pete, I can see the exasperation even in your first para.

if Pakatan Rakyat wants to sleep on, they'll get a rude shock come GE13.

They have been bickering and bitching for one year and when........sigh....... that is finally over, we can only hear loud slumbering.

PR should not only make full use of the internet to help their cause and counter the mainstream media, they should rally sympathetic bloggers, supporters, PR voters and the fence-sitters to their cause in a build up to GE13. They should find no lack of young, enthusiastic supporters and people who believe in a just, united Malaysia or just plainly fed up with the BN government.

Take a leaf from Barack Obama - he used the internet so successfully that he could energize and rally young voters nationwide to his cause, sign up countless volunteers to work for his candidacy, build a massive election fund from just ordinary people (because he rejected funding from interest groups) and has a dedicated blog to daily counter the Republican propaganda machine. He had the influential Fox News Network and many redneck media groups and radio stations working against him, yet he prevailed mainly because of his smart, tactical use of the internet.

PR, get organized. Move with the internet age. Let your internet savy supporters be your invisible branches in every kampong, town and district. Let them disseminate who you are, what you are fighting for. Let the rakyat know that you are fighting for change, that you are fighting for them.

Hurry, please, time is running out.

This is another open wake-up call, Pakatan! RPK must have got so frustrated over the prolonged delay after the initial strong interest generated over the promise of free wireless internet in PR States that he has to bring it out in the open now.

In order to fight political battles convincingly, PR must first deliver her promises quickly. Your supporters need to be informed on why there is this undue delay over such an important matter!

PR state governments must re-examine her strategy-priorities before it’s too late! The sooner free wireless Internet services are provided to the people the better the chances for PR to improve on the last GE results.

God-damned it, PR, you gotta move especially fast on this matter to achieve better public perception of your capabilities!

You are spot on RPK. There is hardly any feedback from the coalition which is very disappointing because even their MPs and state reps are very proficient in the electronic media and very capable of articulating various issues. I though Tian Chua is in charge of information. There are so many current issues affecting the rakyat negatively. Bringing them up would give the opposition a lot of brownie points. So what the heck is going on, Pakatan?

You are right. They ignore you at their peril. I some times despair that the pseudo politicians seem to be stuck in a space warp, what my missus called "airheads living in fairy land". The key point is that PR is definitely at a disadvantage with the Government strangle hold on the MSN. Getting the right message to the people is so powerful and PR have no control. They should start with the States they now control and make advances in BN controlled States before the next GE and they must start right now. As you rightly said, if only 300K more people voted for PR, history would have been rewritten and there would be a PR government today.

Wake up PR. You won't get a second chance, not that BN goons will let you win easily anyway.

Another cheaper alternative will be a FM radio broadcast.
The older generation will be more comfy with their trusty radio.
Such station will be simple ,easy to set up,quite mobile, easy to manage , low budget and it generates advert revenues. Not easy to jam the signals.
WiFi is good as well , provided our infamous talikom do not block access or slow down the bandwidth.

Knock Knock!! Numbskulls. Wake up!
Like RPK says, How are you going to disseminate information to the voters (people)???
1) Going to purchase advertisement space on your favourite newspaper UTUSAN MALAISE???

2) DSAI, LKS & TNA use bicycle and hand out flyers on polling day?

3) All PR ADUN & MP planing protest against unfair media coverage on voting day? (Free accommodation provided by FRU in Hotel ISA, sponsored by Home Ministry).

4) Planning for MASSIVE foreign media coverage (CNN, Al-Jazzera, BBC, etc) about BN abuses.
Hello kawan, the makcik, pakcik, datuk, nenek, aunty, uncle, aney, tangachi, dan lain-lain want to know who to vote for lah! Vote CNN or BBC, ABC or 123. You guys have to show your faces.

Find an alternative to mainstream media. The internet is an idea (like RPK says). Start in your own PR states first. The news will spread fast to other states. Do it first! Stop giving excuses!!

MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS SMEARING YOUR PR NAME. YOU GUYS ARE LOSING YOUR TOUCH WITH THE PEOPLE. WHO DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WILL GO TO FIND MORE INFORMATION....Berita pukul 8 (which is run by your favourite supporter...NAJIb.raZak)

Pete -- I hear you and agree that free WIFI would be a great asset for PR. However, from what I see/hear the quality of Internet connectivity speed in Malaysia still SUCKS BIG TIME!

I am no computer-techie but is it due to the overall infrastructure (bandwidth capacity) or is Telekom Malaysia controlling it?

So even with free WIFI, what can we ensure the "pipes" are in place and free flowing?? Also, not to mention the Malaysian internet police monitoring & filtering the information and blocking access to some websites.

It is true that the Internet is a powerful tool. For educational purposes, research, or to influence voters among other things.

I can imagine myself for instance, not having read anything about opposition parties via the Internet - my only source of news will be the mainstream media - imagine my predicament.

Imagine not being exposed to the atrocities of the present racist regime - I would never get this on the local newspapers. Imagine that.

I will probably not know what Pakatan stands for and who it wants to represent. I would not know much of keADILan.

Just imagine never being exposed to any negative deeds that UMNO and its members are indulging in.

Heck, I would probably vote for BN - not knowing who they really are and what they are doing.

Imagine not knowing there are people like RPK exposing corruption and racial and religious bigotry in UMNO.

Let me put it this way - before the Internet, I voted for BN. Then with the inception of Malaysia Today and other sites that expose the ruthlessness of a racist regime - would I ever vote for BN?

But, that does not mean that Pakatan can sit on its laurels and wait for accolades without making an effort and proving that they indeed are a force to be reckoned with by the ruling party.

With all the independent news we get, it is now up to us to make decisions that will shape our future. Pakatan, in my opinion is falling apart - I would suggest waking up earlier than BN and prove to the people that you oppose the wrongdoings of BN and truly represent the Rakyat.

This is another case of "It's OK, the rakyat loves us, that's the reason why we won the GE in 2008". Aiyo. If you cannot be trusted with small things such as this, can we really trust you in bigger things, such as the administration of this country?

I see no difference in PR and BN then, aside from the fact that PR is really slow in moving for the kill. But both are still dumb-a** slow in executing the most fundamentals of things.

Pete, your article shows a very important fact. Half of the battle is won by he who controls the line of communication and this Pakatan Rakyat is not doing.
