(The Straits Times) - The Malaysian government has warned against excessive use of micro-blogging sites like Facebook and Twitter, arguing that they could erode the country's culture, a report said on Sunday.

Rais Yatim, the information and communication minister, said Muslims and other religious groups must be wary of the Internet as it was introduced by the West.

'We are not saying they cannot use Facebook or Twitter, but when using such facilities, they must upkeep the values taught by Islam, Buddhism or Christianity to maintain our culture,' he was quoted as saying by the New Sunday Times newspaper.

Mr Rais said users must not be influenced by what they see and hear when using the Internet. 'We must be strong in our belief and culture because the identity and image of our country depends on us,' he said.

The government decided last August not to implement a controversial plan to create an Internet filter blocking 'undesirable' websites after coming under fire from rights groups.

Malaysia's lively blogosphere has been a thorn in the side of the Barisan Nasional government, which was been in power for more than half a century but was dealt its worst ever results in the 2008 elections.

IF OUR ANCESTORS had Rais' train of thought (oops, I mean hypothetically, and I do mean hypothetically cos even apes have better brain power than Rais, which I'll prove later), we'd all still be living in the Dark Ages since starting a fire would've been seen as a form of deviance of act against God and a fireless culture.

Then again, we may all still be apes. But apes could think better than Rais, so they allowed the wheel of evolution to move them on and thus gave birth to Homo-Erectus. (Make no mistake Mr, Rais, Homo-Erectus and 'Saiful having an erection' is NOT the same thing).

So? Why not ban internet? I think it's better to go back to the past. We really don't need civilization. I suggest that we close all avenues to civilization and return to Stone Age. We are indeed very lucky because we've a minister who's very intelligent and a real genius. He could smell disaster if we take a step further. Hurry up! Our future is in the past. Abandon all your notebooks and all modern gadgets because they're going to take you to ruins. Hey! Rais, why not leave your notebook to me, or do you have any?

Internet doesn’t, its goons like Rias himself and those from UMNO/BN that systematically erode our country’s cultures. Good culture and good will has all been dilute and eroded, only bad corrupted culture remains.

Culture of corruption, inciting hatred, spinning, lying, deceiving, terrorising its own people, have been fine tuned into an art form. Legalise robbery through NEP and issuance of AP to selected few are our culture, lately, walking away with murder seems to be part of our culture too.

Do Malaysian really have any culture to be proud off?? A culture of bravery to kick-out these UMNO/BN crooks would be a good start.

So,minister ,sorry, I mean buffoon, you love the ancient way of doing things. Not surprising ,your followers still have a problem understanding the difference between race and religion. You can never ever be a statesman

The government has got 100% control over the news papers, TV channels and radio. The only media that the government has not got complete control is the internet and SMS.

Everything that comes out of the government media are 100% lies, deceptions, racist, incitement of hate towards other races/religions and spinning of the truth. While on the other hand the internet is truly democratic. Some information are true, some are lies and some are spins etc. It is up to the reader to make up his or her mind.

All the government is worried about is that they are loosing control of information flow and the rakyat are getting wise to UMNO’s behaviour and tactics. If UMNO does not get control of the media or change their ways they are in serious trouble.
Pakatan at the moment is our only hope to a path to democracy.

Chicken Rais: Internet can erode the country's culture

We fully agree with the learned and western educated Minister. This is the type of wisdom that we hope is not merely another bit of “academic exercise” that he proclaimed of his western generated “doctoral” dissertation when he accepted to position of a minister. We might wish to add, not as an academic exercise, to his profound pronounce that “Internet can erode the country's culture” the some selected “stuff” that “can erode the country's culture”
1.Exchanging one’s principles or a ministerial position can also erode the country's culture
2.Misinforming the rakyats by distortion or omission can also erode the country's culture
3.Rampant corruption of your ministerial friends can also erode the country's culture
4.Abuse of power can also erode the country's culture
5.Thefts of rakyat’s money can also erode the country's culture
6.Murders not investigated can also erode the country's culture
7.Perverting judicial processes can also erode the country's culture
8.Perverting constitutional processes can also erode the country's culture
9.Perverting law and order by the government and polis can also erode the country's culture
10.Selling one’s principles for a few pieces of silver can definitely erode the country's culture.

Dll.

But of course the various item listed are mere “academic exercise” but picking on internet is wholly befitting that of a typical sellout, principle deficit chicken Rais.

Chicken Rais Yatim, the information and communication minister, said Muslims and other religious groups must be wary of the Internet as it was introduced by the West. Chicken Rais should know what he is talking about, he got his "academic exercised" PhD introduced by the West.

Like every invention, it can be used for good or bad. To say that its from the west and so must be cautious its a stupid advice and to say that we must not be influenced by it ,comes from an ignoramous.

How is one going to learn and advance when most of the informations are either censored or altered to suit the agendas of the ruling party. ? Its good that the internet was here or else the people would still be in the dark. Another step we need is to liberalise our education system to a more 'opened' and 'truthful ' style. An education that encourage the student to think and not just 'drink' as it was today.
If one were to look at an advance country, one would see that all are free to think and 'drink' what they want to 'drink' . Not here where before the only drink is Amno-Cola.

Wake up old fashioned Rais ! You belong to the old guards. This is the new decade 2010. This is precisely the kind of modern day living technology needed to rid the country of archaic mentality such as yours. Your era of the controlled newsprint on paper pulp is over. You have lost control totally over the media. However you dinosaurs can slow it down by reducing the internet penetration into the population. That way you guys can still rule for another 1000 years much like the Talibans. No need for any high speed broadband connection for the people. The faster we get the information the faster you guys get extinct. You should slow it down. Throttle it back to the good old 56kbps dial up, that way we would not get videos on youtube of misdeeds.

Dear Rice
I always thought that our culture is about the following:-
1. Foundation based on discrimination along lines of creed, colour of skin, ethnicity, country of origin & other artificial divides.
2. Religious bigotry.
3.Corruption.
4.Abuse of power.
5.Theft of public coffers.
6.Rent seeking.
7.Handouts for some so-called "lucky souls".
8.System of handicaps, privileges, discounts & benefits accorded to some only.
9.Non-meritcracy.
10. Exclusivity of certain businesses to one class of people & prohibition to others.
11. Non-admission of certain educational institutions to some communities.
12. Never Ending Policies.
13 And many other forms of discrimination, exclusivity, special treatment etc.

I think the statement by the minister is valid in the sense that yellow culture has indeed polluted our culture and may erode our beliefs. Likewise, it has opened our eyes to the one-sided propaganda and mainstream media controlled by the gomen.

It has allowed persona like RPK and his knights to shed light on half-truths and outright lies. Personally, I have benefitted from the internet and have since stopped reading the newspapers and viewing other gomen-controlled media. This has allowed me to shape new and balanced opinions which I regularly share here. So here's to the lesser of evils, the internet, facebook and twitter is here to stay and enable us to call a spade a spade. May RPK and knights light the way into a new Malaysia.

Rais has ulterior motive: he is worried UNMNO/BN will lose more support if it has not already done so! He is worried that Malaysians will get wise and be more aware of politics and current affairs in the country especially the explosive contents relating to scandals, corruption, abuse of power and what not.

Internet, e-commerce, email, e-everything is the world's culture, the culture (if that's what he says it is) that is the same for everyone in their millions the world over; in fact 600 million people.

Why doesn't Rais try to ban the internet all together for the "safety" of Malaysian children and all adults.

He must realise that people are not stupid and want to enjoy what he enjoys on the internet. The internet is a double-edged sword much like everything else.Just like the hand phone which is so capable and ubiquitous, the internet by itself is not a problem. Going by his worried, if not paranoid and small-minded view, the hand phone should also be banned cos it can promote negative culture as it is empowered with 3G mutimedia and camera capability!
