If Marina Mahathir had truly wanted to show up the lack of press freedom and the extent of government and party thought control, or even of inequities in syariah law, why did she choose to put The Star, already under attack, further on the defensive?

By uppercaise

Why did she not attack the blatant use of government machinery, such as KDN, and the blatant connivance of civil servants such as KDN, the police, and the Attorney-General, in stifling the voices of reason and giving free rein to the voices of hate and bigotry?

Instead, Marina chose to push The Star to the wall by writing on the same subject that had already put the paper and managing editor P Gunasegaram under the always-present guillotine that is the KDN publishing permit. (And it was a good column, too, worthy of public discussion.)

By doing so, she’s turned The Star into the villain — and walked away with an injured air, a supposed victim of “censorship”.

She’s turned the tables neatly around. She’s moved the spotlight away from Umno and the government and from the gathering forces of Ketuanan Melayu and left The Star trapped in its glare, even though the paper and Guna personally have been victimised by the Ketuanan Melayu mob of Perkasa — which has her father’s backing — and by KDN officials so quick to issue a show-cause letter.

I wanna add my 2 cents worth.

For a while now, I've been observing some of Marina's "musings". I think it's true what they say: The sins of the father come back to haunt the children.. At the time that Badawi was in power, Marina often used to slam him for his slip-ups & boo-boos. Not once did she even sound the tiniest bit apologetic on what daddy Mahathir had done in the past when he was PM. So I always felt that it was hypocritical of Marina when she "positioned" herself as something of a reformist minded individual.

How can she sell reform or change when she don't care to first admit, the role daddy dearest played into turning Malaysia into the desperate situation she finds herself to be today? Any clean up of Malaysia - if we ever get there - will have to also address all the mess that corruption had done to this country. Mahathir's name is just about everywhere in all of the major "deals" done in this country in the past 20-30 years; Barry Wain wouldn't have plucked his figures while reading the morning newspaper at breakfast.

What take did Marina ever offer on the USD100b that was lost through corruption during dad's days on the throne?

Say, if any anybody comes up to you & calls your father names & accuses him of being the possibly most corrupt man in Malaysia, what will you do?

And yet, Marina seems to have adopted her father's genes well by being thick skinned about it. I'm sure by now that as she sits in her silver spoon lifestyle villa, bought by daddy's riches, she would have read most of the comments that follow. It's all over cyberspace :- just check Mkini. It will be too difficult to miss it.

But, just like daddy, she choses to ignore (a bit also like that Rocky Buru fella), and continues to pretend that she is well loved by all the masses.

Say Marina, what or who are you when compared against the likes of real men & women who sacrifice for this country?

You can't hold a candle when compared with the likes of Lim Guan Eng, Anwar, Raja Petra, MG Pillai, Teoh Beng Hock, Steven Gan, Lim Kit Siang & Karpal Singh, Wan Azizah, Irene Fernandez.

These are the real heroes of Malaysia.

Not someone who sits in front of her PC & writes articles to fill up time between shopping hours, while sipping tea on silver cups.

Marina,

Run to your dady and ask him why he created KDN as an UMNO lapdog? Than let us know what he tells you. . ., we are eagerly waiting for the answer!

Otherwise, shut up and stop whining!

Unwittingly, marina has done all a favour - now, one more little favour. Close down The Star! Take away its permit, make the chinese more angry. After all, khir toyol said, to recapture Selangor, UMNO NEEDS THE SUPPORT OF THE CHINESE!

Dont cry for the Star. Dont cry for Marina. They are all crooks and it is good that they are at each other's throat. If Marina is truly the person she claims to be, she should acknowledge that most of the ills we see in this country today is the poison injected into the system by her father. And it is quite difficult to remove the poison now.
Casper has made some very valid observations. Marina is no angel.

Well done uppercaise for being able to see through the woods but your essay has that tinge of civility, keeping back the punches when you should rightfully let fly.

I for one will not be so charitable.

M'sians in general are a soft touch, too easy to forgive and all the while, too easily hoodwinked as well. Never forget, Marina is the Devil's spawn and right now for the entire family, they have painted themselves into the corner and assuming Custer's last stance.

Already, a big chunk of the family's liquid assets have been shifted abroad, just in case the inevitable happens. It would be all too easy to persecute Mahathir and family because once UMNO falls, there will be too many willing to talk (some to save their own hide albeit there would be some who will come forth for more altruistic reasons). And let me just say, it is no coincidence the old man is on a war path, with him leading the first line of defense as no one else has proven capable and before anyone credits Mahathir for trying to bolster UMNO, please reassess and realise the old man is more interested in saving his own skin and that of the family while UMNO's interest is secondary (to hell with Najib and handlers and Rosmah too, who can only stare while Mahathir flexes to exert his will - just like old times).

Currently, it is no coincidence the ultra's have picked up the pace. Often times, even Najib has no control over internal affairs in UMNO and please, don't wonder why as all commotion on the sidelines are the handiwork of the Devil himself. What a difference a year makes - is the saying - but it is actually two years on from Dollah Badawi's administration. At the height of Dollah's prowess, he and KJ had Mahathir by the balls but failed to press on. If there was a moment when the old man truly feared for himself, it was the time he checked himself into IJN for an extended spell (doing a 'Suharto' and hoping to pass himself off as senile if Badawi and KJ really did squeeze and let fly at the height of Lingamgate). And don't for one moment think the old man didn't talk to Marina about his personal sins, vulnerability and the family's fortune.

Marina remains coy but she is very much in the thick of it all and does enjoy the ill gotten largess of riches amass. There is nothing exceptional in her writings and having assumed the role of a 'sleeper' all the while, now more than ever, her prowess and cunning will be put to test - in service or should I say, in defense of the Devil and family but fortunately for us, she's not too bright.

Never forget, should UMNO fall, she too should be subjected to scrutiny like all them crooks.

Yes, that is one Interesting way to look at Marina indeed.
Now, the ball is in your court. Marina. No more crap that the Star wont print your article.
Because of your blood line, your motives will often be viewed with suspicion. You have to double/triple up to convince otherwise, including selling part or most of of your bloodline soul.

Say it loud and clear here. You have the whole floor to yourself.

We have stopped listening to you. Thrash ISA. For Malaysia.

Although I would also agree that they deserved it. I got a feeling too that something is not right.

Why the Star and not Ugutan M? Well, I'm sure Ugutan M is also under their control, which would listen to the daughter of the BIG BOSS, right? Or... They refused to let her even touch their biggest "supporter" of evil propaganda, fearing that it will be put to the spotlight?

Well, I do have high regards for Marina. But this is getting a little fishy, especially with the recent moves by CSL, the rich WKS and team.

Well, serves The Star right!!
Marina is no unbias, fair nor unprejudiced commentator.
But being a public figure in her own right, she has every right to cry bloody murder to the spiking of her column.
Yes, The Star is the villian . Too many times now, it had crawled away from speaking up for what is fair and unbias public scrutiny of the state of affairs of our country. It had actually lost the right to call itself The people's paper!!
Of course we know there's the KDN-permit, but when u give in time and again to the UMNOputras manning the KDN permit bureaucracy, u need to shi* in your pants once they raise their voice at u!!
