Anwar to contest for PKR president post in August party polls

(The Star) – PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be contesting for the presidential position in the party elections next month.

Its deputy Youth chief Dr Afif Bahardin said the move will serve as preparation for Anwar to take over the Prime Minister’s post in future, succeeding Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“As a party under the ruling Government, we need to be prepared for the future.

“If Anwar Ibrahim is the candidate (for the next Prime Minister), then it is compulsory for him to first contest for the PKR president post.

“I believe PKR members will support this move, as it will mark his active return to the party,” said Dr Afif during a press conference after attending the Penang Parkinson Disease Update 2018 course at Penang Hospital on Friday (July 6).

The PKR party elections will be held by the end of next month, while nomination of candidates will be held on July 29.

Dr Afif, however, declined to comment if he was eyeing the vice-president post as rumoured.

“I have not made up my mind yet on which post I would be contesting,” he said.
