Abdul Wahid Omar resigns as PNB group chairman

Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar has resigned as Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) group chairman, according to a source close to the government-linked company.

Today (June 29) was his last day, and he is expected to be sent off at 4pm.

It is not known who will replace him as PNB chairman.

The Star previously reported that Abdul Wahid was expected to resign as early as July.

The Star also reported that he might go as part of a shakeup that is expected to see 100 senior officials from GLCs dropped under the new government.

Speculation has also been rife that the new administration is not happy with his defence of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) during 14th general campaigning.

Abdul Wahid was appointed PNB chairman following the completion of his term as a senator and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit from June 2013 to June 2016.

Prior to his Cabinet appointment, Abdul Wahid was the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank) from May 2008 until June 2013.

Maybank was the third major organisation that he has led as CEO. He was also group CEO of Telekom Malaysia Bhd from July 2004 until its de-merger with Axiata Group Bhd in April 2008.
