EPF contribution for housewives a top priority for Wan Azizah

(Bernama) – Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who signed in for work today as the women and family development minister, has made obtaining an Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contribution for housewives one of her main priorities.

The deputy prime minister said she would propose a contribution of 2% of the husband’s salary and RM50 from government funds.

At a press conference after reporting for duty at the ministry here, she said she would meet with EPF officers next week to discuss the mechanism for the contribution, as well as criteria for eligibility, among others.

“We also have to consider the contribution for first and second wives in the case of Muslims,” she added.

The EPF contribution for housewives was one of the promises made in Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto.

Wan Azizah said she was confident that the ministry staff and officers would extend their cooperation and assistance to enable her to discharge her duties.

“I feel that we are going to be a good team,” she said.

Wan Azizah arrived at the ministry at about 9am, where she was welcomed by secretary-general Suriani Ahmad and other ministry officers.

At the minister’s office, she was presented with a note on the handing over of duties from former minister Rohani Abdul Karim, and given a briefing by senior officers.
