Sarawak Report editor Rewcastle-Brown steps on to Malaysian soil

(The Star) – Clare Rewcastle-Brown is back in Malaysia following the fall of the Barisan Nasional government.

The return of the Sarawak Report’s editor, who was persona non grata during the administration of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, went through Malaysian immigration without a hitch, reported a news portal on Saturday.

“I had a really smooth arrival. My heart went a little bit (faster) at immigration, but everyone was very nice as ever.

“I had no problem, so that was great,” she told the portal upon arriving at KL International Airport on Friday.

Rewcastle-Brown had been on the police wanted list following an arrest warrant issued by Bukit Aman since 2015 for allegedly committing offences detrimental to parliamentary democracy, and spreading false reports and statements to cause public alarm, under Section 124B and 124I of the Penal Code, respectively.

She told the news portal that she had spoken to a few friends who had assured her that the charges are being dropped.

Rewcastle-Brown added that she is here on a personal visit and plans to meet up with some friends.

The Star reported on Thursday (May 17) that the Sarawak Report website was now accessible again after being barred by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for more than two years.

In July 2015, the MCMC blocked access to the Sarawak Report on grounds that it undermined the stability of the nation.
