Wan Azizah rejected PM post despite offer from the King

(The Sun) – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V had offered the prime minister post to Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail but she refused the offer, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed.

Anwar said the matter was raised during a meeting held by Pakatan Harapan leaders with the King following the coalition’s victory in the recent 14th General Election.

Wan Azizah, who is also the PH and PKR president, turned down the offer as she honoured the promise made by the coalition to appoint Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to the prime minister post.

“After the votes were counted and PKR won the most (parliament) seats, Wan Azizah was suggested by the King (to become the prime minister),” he said.

“She replied that an agreement has been made within PH that Tun Mahathir would be appointed to the post.

“The King decreed that it was rare to find a politician that honour a promise despite being given the opportunity,” Anwar said in his speech at a gathering to celebrate his release from jail at Padang Timur.

Wan Azizah, who now holds the position of deputy prime minister, however had requested to the King for Anwar’s immediate release, Anwar said.

He added the King had then given his guarantee for Anwar to be released as soon as possible.

He added that the King understood that Anwar’s incarceration was a miscarriage of justice.

“The King had consented (for Anwar to be pardoned) as there was no justice in our judicial process,” Anwar said.
