DAP slams MCA, Gerakan for failing to ensure sterner action taken against Raja Petra

(TMI) – DAP today slammed MCA and Gerakan for their “disgraceful failure” to get the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take sterner action against blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin.

Raja Petra, who is living in exile in the UK, recently made false allegations on his blog, Malaysia Today, that billionaire Robert Kuok had donated money to DAP to overthrow the Barisan Nasional federal government.

Guan Eng regards the attack on Robert Kuok as an attack on the entire Chinese community

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the “failure” of MCA and Gerakan, which have ministers in the cabinet, is another “betrayal of truth and justice”.

“Instead of a heavy fine, MCMC merely gave RPK (Raja Petra) a slap on the wrist by asking him to remove the three articles (he wrote) on Kuok, for violating Section 233 of the MCMC Act,” he said in a statement today.

On March 5, MCMC ordered Raja Petra to remove the three articles, titled “Robert Kuok wants Chinese rule in Malaysia”, “Malaysian Insight funder fingered” and “Robert Kuok’s last chance at changing the government”, which were published on February 21 and 23.

In its letter to the blogger, MCMC said after receiving complaints on the articles, it found that they are in violation of Section 233 of the MCMC Act, which criminalises the use of the internet for communications that are “obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character, with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person”.

Lim said although Raja Petra failed to show proof, his allegations led several top Umno leaders, such as Prime Minister and party president Najib Razak, Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, and Supreme Council members Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Tajuddin Rahman dan Azlina Othman Said, to attack Kuok.

The Robert Kuok issue has shown that DAP is more Chinese than MCA

He said MCA president Liow Tiong Lai has openly promised to take action against some Umno Supreme Council members or Raja Petra, but so far, nothing has been done.

“Is this another example of a toothless tiger making threats when it is subservient to Umno? If MCA cannot even get the cabinet to take sterner action against RPK with a heavy fine, there is no hope that Umno leaders will apologise and withdraw their false allegations against Kuok and DAP.

“How, then, can MCA be trusted to deliver promises made to Malaysians, especially the Chinese community, in the run-up to the general election?” said the Bagan MP.
