‘One should not follow examples of Tanggang’

Umno Veteran Club secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Yaakub said it was unfortunate that some had chosen to “bite the hands that had fed them”.

(NST) – Those who became rich through opportunities provided by government policies should not emulate the traits of Malay folklore character, Tanggang.

Umno Veteran Club secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Yaakub said it was unfortunate that some had chosen to “bite the hands that had fed them”.

“If it is true that they are being ungrateful, then they are what we can describe as the modern ‘Tanggang’. They are being ungrateful despite owing their successes to government policies.

“We know that they have been benefitting from government policies that had become key to their accomplishments,” Mustapha said when contacted today.

Tanggang is a tale of an ungrateful son, whom upon marrying a princess, shunned his poor mother due to shame and embarrassment of his origins.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said “Sugar King” Tan Sri Robert Kuok would not have made his fortune without various government policies that had become a key to his success.

Earlier political blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin had recently reported having claimed that Kuok harboured an agenda seeking to replace the current government with one led by DAP.

The New Straits Times Press had contacted Kuok Group for comments on the allegations but had yet to receive any response.
