(The Star) – A PKR lawmaker has come under fire for sharing a fake TIME magazine cover featuring Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as being “no.2 on the most corrupt list”.

Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah said he had no idea it was fake, when he shared it on his Facebook on Wednesday morning.

“I honestly didn’t know. I am taking down the post now,” he told The Star Online.

The Subang MP had earlier posted the fake cover with a caption: “PM Najib Razak has made the headlines once again! For the wrong reason, sadly. This is a very serious title, rank or even accusation directed towards him. Will he now ‘claim’ to sue Time magazine?”

However, the link Sivarasa shared on his post was an actual link to a TIME article dated March 17, that listed five countries which are now grappling with corruption scandals, with Malaysia listed at number two.

A popular Facebook anonymous political commentator that goes by the pseudonym Lim Sian See was quick to hit back at Sivarasa, accusing the lawmaker of intentionally sharing fake magazine covers.

Lim also produced a fake TIME cover featuring Sivarasa with a heading that says: “Sivarasa Rasiah: MP who likes to spread fake TIME magazine covers”.

“Such mangkuk (So stupid). Or he did it deliberately? It is true that 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad) is listed in an article in TIME Magazine “scandals” but Najib’s face was not on TIME as per that fake cover.”

“Stop spreading fake covers as anyone can do one. As a Member of Parliament, you must be more responsible,” Lim said, adding that Sivarasa should also issue an apology.

The actual cover of the American weekly news magazine for the March 28 edition features Apple CEO Tim Cook in relation to the ongoing Apple-FBI debate over unlocking an iPhone belonging to deceased San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.
