Govt Makes Brave, Unpopular Decision In Face Of Twin Crises - Khairy PDF Print E-mail

A government backbencher Monday said the country had never faced two crises simultaneously, which were the oil and food price hikes, and as such the government had to make an economic decision that was brave and unpopular.

Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau) said the restructuring of the fuel subsidy by the government was a responsible and honest decision that had a positive effect within a short time, besides being fair.

"The fuel price hike is also not unprecedented as alleged by the member from Bagan. From 1996 to 2008, the world crude oil price has risen by 600 percent but only 145 percent in Malaysia," he said when debating the motion on price increases in the Dewan Rakyat Monday.

He also agreed that Petronas should be more transparent so that the people would not have any misgivings about the national petroleum company.

Khairy, who is also Umno Youth deputy chief, disagreed with the suggestion by Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Bagan), who wanted Petronas to use commercial airplanes instead of having private jets to save on fuel expenses.

"This is because Petronas needs to use its jets to go to countries like Kazakhstan, Iran and others to explore for new oil wells.

"Don't make a suggestion that is so simplistic and childish," said Khairy.

He said comparing Malaysia as an oil producer with Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and other oil-producing nations was also unfair as these countries had a much higher production than Malaysia.

Khairy also suggested that the levy received from independent power producers by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) be channelled directly to reduce consumers' electricity tariff.

He also slammed the opposition's suggestion that the government they hoped to form after Sept 16 could reduce the fuel price as this would only raise the budget deficit and caused the nation to borrow money.

He said when the country borrowed money, it would cause its credit rating to drop and would lead to conventional banks not lending money.

"The international 'along' is the International Monetary Fund (IMF). I believe this is a trick to achieve (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim)'s struggle and be a puppet of the IMF and borrow money from it," he said.

At this juncture, Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali (Independent-Pasir Mas) stood up and angrily referred to the parliamentary Standing Order and asked that his sitting be changed as he was not given a chance to speak although he stood up earlier than others.

"This is the Standing Order. If not, I will throw this book. Under the Standing Order, whoever stands first must be given the chance to speak.

"Although I am an independent member, I had been a two-term member of parliament and can be considered a senior. I should not be ignored although I am an independent member," he said.

Deputy Speaker Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar replied: "I hear, YB."

Lim, when debating the motion, also suggested that the government channel RM500 a month to each poor family using Petronas' profits as a measure to lighten their burden following the rise in the price of fuel and goods.

"Petronas has received more than RM570 billion in profits since its formation and from that amount, more than 60 percent has been channelled to the federal government. Why can't the government give each Malaysian family RM6,000 a year or RM500 monthly?" he asked.

Datuk Mohamed Abdul Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) said Lim's suggestion was unrealistic and could confuse the people.

"I understand our (the government's) total income is RM168 billion. From that amount, RM40 billion is for development, RM48 billion for management, RM35 billion for education and RM11 billion for health. After subtracting this, the balance of RM7 billion is distributed to 29 ministries.

"Does it make sense if we give each family RM6,000? Let us be realistic a bit so as not to confuse the people," he said when interrupting the debate. - BERNAMA

What Oxfart quality talking. Seems he never understood basic accountabilities & economics. He should at least raise the issues of rampant corruption, cronynism, no meritocracy, politician greed, wanton wastages, inefficiencies, crime etc instead of just price increase & reasons for it. Is this the standard of UMNO/BN politicians. If so, we must work harder to give them hell & the big BOOT.

It appears that dealing with challenges is beyond your capability.
If its too hard for you to manage, just step aside - and take the easy life.

We need politicians who can deliver - not useless rhetoric trying disguise the incompetence of this administration.

Dear YB SIL Pak LAh,

No 1. Kazakhstan is easily accessible via Dubai. Almost daily flight if I am not mistaken.

No 2. From what I know, even Shell employees from Singapore travel commercial to Iran.

So, either Petronas is too spoilt or just too stupid. Maybe just lazy to check for cheaper alternatives. And your father-in-law's gang had the cheek to tell the rakyat to cut down on wastage - while Petronas is burning away oil money that rightfully belonged to every rakyat. What humbug.

YB seems like a mixture between Rasputin and Borat.

On the other hand, YB may also be pleased to know YB's fellow Malaysians are no longer as ignorant and blind.

Think before you speak. If you have nothing better to say, do restrict your comments to the weather. (see Jane Austen).

Youve got billions of RM since youre the SIL (sial) but us we've got nuthing. Petronas is a public listed company, my pensioner neighbur next door have a share in it. Besides they have less than Shell service station in the country. What have Shell is doing in their 100 years of occupation in Malaysia? Probably you cant suck their money since they bring their wealth directly to Hague. Why dont you make some home made porn movies rather than talk rubbish mr YB.

"Brave" but stupid and utterly heartless!

Stupid --> no programme to combat the inflationary effects of the steep
increase in the price of petrol
Heartless --> no programme to help the poor who are hardest hit by the petrol price increase
Stupid --> responding to the resulting anger of the people by one ad hoc
hare-brained scheme after another

What is sad about this is he adds nothing to the debate when there are so many of his peers have better ideas and perspective on the issue.

For example, in popular polls, 50% of people agree with hike while 50% disagree with the hike, clearly the issue is about division of our society about haves and haves not and this bloodly UMNOputra who is in the top 0.01% income range have no clue and out of touch desperately trying to look like he gets it when he does not.

Surprised that the Umno Youth deputy chief (SIL) has lots to say
in Parliament instead of the UMNO youth Chief.
90% BN "senior" MPS must be "giggling mad" behind his back I "think"?

1) Restructuring of the fuel subsidy by the government was a responsible and
honest decision that had a positive effect within a short time.
(Right to the point - Negative effect, immediate hardship & it hurts v bad.)
2) Petronas should be more transparent.
( Now? So simplistic and childish.)
3) Saudi Arabia, Venezuela...unfair.. they had higher production than Malaysia.
( M'sia fuel increase was unfair compared to many non producing countries.
Repeated again & again by millions of people in coffee shops, offices,
factories, estates, wet markets, petrol stations, news media...
Plse don't you repeat this or it's a confirmation that your brain is...)

4) $ Levy received from independent power TNB channelled directly to reduce
consumers' electricity tariff...
$ Opposition's suggestion that when they form the government after
Sept 16 could reduce fuel price, caused budget deficit and nation to
borrow money...
$ Credit rating drop, conventional banks not lending money...
$ RM48 billion for management, RM35 billion for education...

( Let's leave it to "The people" to judge. My mind suddenly jammed.)

5) Let us be realistic a bit so as not to confuse the people.
(Confuse? No, we are already in a "coma")

This will be my last response to you SIL

Oh God, help us. Especially now.

Khairy,
You too had better do your own home work before you rebute Lim`s suggestion. Do you know how much it cost to fly a private jet compare with using a commerical flight. Its just a fraction of the total cost. Do you know beside the fuel cost, there are other cost that need to be paid . Have you heard about landing and take off fee, navgivation fee, airport handling fee, overnite fee, parking fee, service fee while on ground, taxes etc etc . Just say the CEO want to have class , don`t bluff those who are not in the know . Now, who is more childish and simplistic in suggestion ! Bodoh .

A government backbencher Monday said the country had never faced two crises simultaneously, which were the oil and food price hikes, and as such the government had to make an economic decision that was brave and unpopular.

Actually we face 3 crises simultaneously. The third being the crises of corruption and overspending by the government.

By raising the price of petrol it seems to solve the government's crises of corruption and overspending while the other 2 crises had been made worst.

So it seems obvious to us now the reason for the recent rise in fuel price. The government is unable to pay for it's corruption and excesses. The people have to suffer due to the corruption and incompetence of a government that had serve the greed of many in government. We have so much in Malaysia and more than adequate to serve the need of everyone but unfortunately we will never have enough to serve the greed of a few fat cats in government.

Our fuel and food crises are linked if this KJ fellow knew what he was talking about. Fuel is such a basic commodity that EVERY aspect of our lifes are linked to it. And this monkey thinks that the solution to these problems is an economic one. It is like using a screw driver to hammer in a nail. If the fuel price had remained the cost of everything would have been moderated and Malaysia would have been one of those blessed nation that would have been spared the hardship. The government, instead of reducing her own spending - excesses that had been built up over the years, had decided instead to impose on the rakyat the wide-spread suffering.

So oxford boy (down boy, down) spare us the rhetoric of how the country would lose its credit rating and the simplistic and childish lesson on economics.

The bottomline is this ; the current is no longer viable or functional without the deep pockets of Petronas and such a state of affair is not sustenable.

A short story to end. I had travelled to Myanmar and thailand over the years. I often like to visit the rural areas to get a feel of how these people survive. Myanmar for eg. is a very rich country but because of the corruption and excesses there the people never get to enjoy the riches. And yet the people could survive. The simple reason is agriculture. Take away that and you take away the food security of the nation.

Malaysia is richly endowed with rich farming land and yet over the years due to mismanagement, narrow view and small-mindedness of the BN government, corruption, cronyism(this is why we have all these mega projects) we have become a net importer of food. We are so obsessed in building pie in the sky that we could not produce food for ourselves to fry smilies/grin.gif

Food security is far more important and will become more so than national security - all those SB budak smilies/grin.gif should learn farming instead of lepaking with their black spectacle and pouch tailing that are a threat not to the nation but to those corrupt in power.

All the purchases of military hardware due to some perceived threat is like fighting the windmills of our mind.

We have many windmills that could be used to fool the people but what is real is corruption in high places in Malaysia. This is an inescapable fact and this was the real reason, as revealed by this oxford boy(down boy, down).

What shame. Tak tahu malu kerajaan BN ini.

Just 2 points. One, If IMF is an 'along', why is Malaysia a member? Two, why should our credit rating drop if we borrow money? It drops if we don't pay our debts. If you don't borrow, banks will have difficulties rating you. As you have no borrowing record with banks and they would not know if you are credit-worthy, i.e that you can repay. Even wealthy Singapore and Brunei have created debt-market so that they can be rated.
