Selangor Sultan criticises PAS for objecting to two singers PDF Print E-mail

By Hazlin Hassan, The Straits Times

A VISIBLY angry Sultan of Selangor has lashed out at the opposition Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) for trying to stop two singers from performing at an upcoming football match between the state and Singapore.

INAPPROPRIATE: PAS Youth says that both dangdut singer Mas Idayu and rock star Ella present too daring an image that does not conform to Islamic standards. -- PHOTOS: FREDA HASSAN, THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

The issue has created tension in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition as PAS tries to push its Islamic agenda, while the Democratic Action Party (DAP) says it will not allow this to happen.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah told The Star daily that the protest over the planned performances by rock singer Ella and dangdut singer Mas Idayu was 'hypocritical' and 'trivial'.

'If this is going to be so difficult, we might as well hold this annual event in Singapore,' he said of the Sultan of Selangor Cup match. 'I am sure they will be more than happy to play host.'

The Selangor PAS youth wing sent a note to Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim on Monday saying that performances by Ella and Mas Idayu at the July 6 game were inappropriate for young people.

But the Sultan said: 'They are performers suitable for the family, and I don't know what the fuss is all about.'

He said that Selangor's residents were not 'just PAS and Muslims'.

Selangor PAS Youth chief Sallehen Mokhyi told The Straits Times: 'The image of Ella and Mas Idayu is very daring. Their performances do not conform to Islamic standards. We have many other artistes like Mawi and Siti Nurhaliza.'

He said that PAS leaders would meet the Sultan today to discuss the issue.

At the weekend, PAS Youth urged opposition-run states to implement strict Islamic syariah laws.

Such laws - like those in Kelantan, which has been ruled by PAS since 1990 - would likely ban gambling, limit liquor sales and mandate a dress code for women.

The opposition coalition of PAS, the DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat won control of Selangor, Perak, Penang and Kedah, and retained Kelantan, in the March election. But the PAS Youth demands have shown how fragile the coalition is.

DAP chairman Karpal Singh and DAP's Lim Guan Eng, who is Penang's Chief Minister, dismissed the idea of implementing syariah law.

'There is no need for us to discuss such things further,' Mr Lim was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times. 'We will not impose any laws on any particular segment.'

DAP MP Tony Pua warned on his blog: 'If there is continued and increased lobbying by PAS leaders for implementation of laws such as the above, it will at some point make the Pakatan Rakyat coalition untenable.'

The sultan is correct

Aurat
---------------------------------
Muslim men cannot show knee, as in women cannot show even a strand of hair to public.
Why not protest against men playing football? Why has it to be women singers? Why the 'double standards' ?
PAS Youth cannot simply pick a gender , they should also demand that those footballers not show their knee and thighs

Mat Rempit is a lot more dangerous and the Sultan is correct this time round!!!

One day during a lunch break from your job in Washington DC, you're waiting for a friend on a street corner when a strangely dressed couple approaches you and asks if they can speak to you for a moment.

The man has powdered wig on his head and is wearing a silk shirt, a waistcoat, breeches that reach only to his knees, silk stockings, and black shoes with a silver buckle on each shoe.

The woman is wearing a powdered wig and a long, flowing dress that reaches almost to the ground. They look like a couple that has just stepped out of a movie set for an American Revolutionary War film.

The couple starts to explain that they are followers of a religion in which George Washington was a mighty prophet of Ba-al. Everything that George Washington taught, believed, said, and practised must be accepted as the inspired Word of Ba-al.

The couple went on to explain that because Washington was a prophet of Ba-al, we must lived as George Washington lived. For example, all men should wear the way George Washington dressed, and all women should wear a dress such as Mrs. Washington wore.

We must even eat the food that the Washingtons ate. For example, George Washington did not like peas. Thus no one should be allowed to eat peas today.

Washington's political views must be viewed as the only valid form of government. And since he owned slaves, slavery must be viewed as being a valid political structure for today.... aseertion from a book by Morey, R.

Just some food for thought to share. No offence.

Good to see young people voicing their concerns on public issues. BUT, wrong subject.

I would have thought that PAS youth wing should voice out against more nobel social issues affecting the whole country like, eradication of poverty, child abuse, molestation of women, rape, crime, snatch theft, public law and order, security and safety and other social issues more worthy of our attention.

This will bode well for them as a party.

In The Qur'an there is a verse that read

" Ati-Ul-Lah wa ati-ul-rasul wa ulil-amri min kum"

which can be translate to mean OBEY ALLAH, AND OBEY THE PROPHET, AND THE LEADER AMONGS YOU.(excuse my limited direct translation)

In The translation, the sequence of which the directive is given is taken to mean the priority is to the earlier against the latter.

It can be taken to mean if Allah say NO, and the prophet say NO, the leader cannot supersede Allah and supersede rasul and say YES.

Are such people from PAS politicians who would do anything to score mileage or do they really believe in what they are saying?
If that is their belief, the conclusion is that Malay men can not control their sexual urge so much so that :-
1) need seperate check out counter or Malay men will get hard on and do bad things
2) need thicker/darker uniform for female students or Malay men will get hard on and molest, rape, or pre-marital sex
3) need cover hair and ears or Malay men will get hard on.
4) Girl can not go to park with Malay man alone or they will commit zina.

Are Malay men different from others?

Why NOT ban Muslim women from driving as it gives them freedom and may commit zina with Malay men?

Organization/people like SIS, Haris Ibrahim etc are NOT doing enough to reverse this Islamization trend.

Malay men, cakap lah... apa opinion you?

This is what happen when the fundamentals of any religion is invasive by nature - the leaders will always seek to control others when they have the power. The more staunch and sincere they are, the more fanatical they become!

PAS has been given a chance to rule - and given a glimpse of what they are capable of if they are fully in control tomorrow. Whether you are Muslim or non-muslim....be WARN! The more pious PAS leaders are, the more intently they will impose their worldview on you. As far as they are concern, they are sincerely doing it for your good - whether you like it or not!

PAS is once again proving themselves to be the dirty herpes virus that they have historically been when they join of any opposition coalition. Just like how they laid dormant their Bedouin ways prior to the 1999 GE and then had a "breakout" after they got a small taste of victory. So too they have done for the 2008 GE.

PAS Youth proves exactly why Islamofascist scum need to be locked up in facilities like Guantanamo and be waterboarded until they turn purple. You cannot make peace with these people. They will lie dormant only to strike you on the jugular when you've lowered your defenses (or voted for them). This is what is known in Islam as Taqiyya.

PAS youth is only merely intefering in own Muslims' affair.

and PAS youth certainly has some degree of 'autonomy' from main PAS party.

this is just some monkey action created by SELANGOR PAS YOUTH only.

So people, get your facts right before bursting comments like Malay and Non-Muslims.

And Again , As I said, there's no difference between a woman singer not wearing tudung, and a male footballer, showing knees and thighs.

Any ground that PAS gains, it is Malay girls first and foremost on the receiving end before PAS makes further dictates into the life's of others - all contrary to what the good book preaches.

Already, there are no Malay contestants in any beauty pageant and the flimsy reasons given reflect badly on all of us in society. It is a possibility, PAS members don't have control over their own lust, all M'sians, especially girls, can't partake in community activities that has least to do with what PAS warns of.

PAS, Jakim and whatever religious umbrella - let the girls have their own say and perhaps go on to win a string of pagaents around the world.

In the era of the internet and generational changes in ideas of what is considered sexually provocative or 'unhealthy', PAS Youth position over the concert is baffling.

PAS must learn to be honest and realistic. The print and electronic media is replete with images of scantily clad women. Programs by RTM and TV3 frequently show popular Malay pop stars who 'de rigeur' do not subscribe to PAS dress code.
Furthermore, PAS should be aware that Ella and Mas Idayu are not porn artistes but talented and and dare I say sexy stars in Malay popular culture.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that all Malaysian teenagers have easy access to pornography. It forms a regular sexual outlet for those who are not sexually active. Given the nature of the pornographic material to and used by young Muslims, many would consider Ella and Mas Idayu 'tame' and suitable entertainment even for the Dewan Ulamak!

PAS is being hypocritical, knowing full well that those attending the scheduled concert would in all probability see women regularly in entertainment scenarios which are significantly more sexually provocative.

Given this reality, PAS Youth call for the ban is 'Munafik' behaviour and a cheap publicity exercise. It is also 'biadap' towards the Sultan. The Sultan deserves our praise for holding firm and not giving in to these Munafiks.

Daulat Tuanku!

The fundamental of Islam is that there is something wrong with the world, so they set out to change the world; the fundamental of buddhism, taoism and jainism is that people have natural defilments independent of the environment, so they teach people how to purify themselves in any exposure and make wise choices to avoid unsuitable environments - voluntarily. One side need to use impositions and force, the other side uses education and and let you make your own choices. The true practitioners of buddhism, taoism and jainism have no religion, just individuals who practice what's right of life and taking responsibility for the outcomes when they err. Of course, this is just a simplistic comparison, but take your pick on which type will cause more problems in the world. Look at history. look at Malaysia.

In worrying times like this with fuel and food prices hike, among others. And with the possiblity of recession hitting our shores, surely a game of soccer would help us destress. Even during WW II, soccer was played.

So PAS Youth, moral of the storey is, relak - lah kawan!, don't get so worked up over 2 lovely singers, let's enjoy a game of soccer or two.

Unfortunately, there are major problems with the Malay male, primarily stemming from ingrained cultural attitudes and exogenous religious influences. Education should be the way out of this 'dilemma' but sadly the system reinforces rather than challenges these weaknesses. There is a pressing need to reduce the influence of uneconomic Islamic programmes in schools and universities which result in thousands of Islamic graduates holding the country to ransom with attitudes and beliefs that can only move the country in one direction - backwards.

Today's papers indicate that 64% of fresh IPTA undergraduates are women while the figures at the top four unis are pretty shocking, especially among the Malays, where 70% of students are women. The figures at the polytekniks and community colleges indicate more men but there is a crisis at the higher academic levels, which means that 50% of female Malay graduates will either marry less academically qualified men or marry outside of their own race. This is especially problematic since men are still considered the main bread winners while significant numbers of women remain at home bearing and raising the mandatory five children. This means that the allocation of resources is very skewed because those who receive the bulk of higher education funding do not go on to realise their full economic potential!

I should add that I am (nominally) Muslim and that my Malay wife, I admit, is much smarter than me -but we somehow manage to get along smilies/wink.gif

The people are with the Sultan. He has proven yet again that he will speak up for the people.

These PAS Youth trouble-makers on the other hand are revealing to the world the height of their hypocrisy. Who are they to define who is "appropriate" and who is not when they themselves are so hypocritical. When there are countless other more pressing issues that beg to be addressed, this sorry bunch of misguided, power-hungry, aggressive, quarrelsome characters are just looking to raise hell over controversial issues because they are so greedy for publicity.

If they are sincerely interested in putting themselves to good use for the sake of religion, then they should emulate the Mufti of Perlis who pointed out where the real problems lie. Ofcourse, we have not heard much from that very enlightened young man for some time. I wonderrrrrrrrrrrr why??? Is he keeping a low profile because he wants to, or because some people want him to??

I am sorry but I just don't get it. Did PAS youth issue an ultimatum? Did they DEMAND that these two singers be banned? Are they threatening to riot?

What I read was "The Selangor PAS youth wing sent a note to Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim on Monday saying that performances by Ella and Mas Idayu at the July 6 game were inappropriate for young people."

Suddenly, its open season for Islam bashing and Malay bashing. And you guys claims to be non-racist and Islam haters? What happen to freedom of speech and freedom of expressions?

In Islam, its very simple. If you do not fully understand it, do not comment as it can be very irritating to Muslims who knows their religion. As for the so-called Muslims, if you do not wish to observe the hukum, thats entirely between you and Allah but do not try to belittle those hukums as it leads to Murtad.

I am not pious and enjoys listening to music as much as the next person. But, when others chose to speak out, I will not jump up and start accusing them of being backward Bedouins etc. Check "sifat 20" and see if you really understand what they mean. They spoke out as it is their duty to do so as a Muslim. They are not forcing you from attending. Not to speak out would be "subahat". If I remember correctly, PAS has always had the same stand on similar issues. Not to protest would be the hypocritical move. Even if they choose to demonstrate, it is their democratic right although I may not support it. You want freedom? Make sure its there for ALL MALAYSIAN. Agree to disagree. Isn't that what its all about?

And, what has this got to do with being a Malay? Who is the racist pig now?

For the rest of you, get a grip. If you wish for people to respect your views, you should first learn to respect theirs. The way you react betrays your true nature. Looks like freedom of speech and freedom of expression is still off the agenda. Or does it apply to "all except Islam"?

Those who strongly supports these two performers are more than welcomed to send their notes to the MB. Thats what democracy is all about isn't it? Everybody gets to have their say and at the end of the day, its up to the authority to make the call.

Liberal Islam? It belongs to the same trash as Islam Hadhari.

Daulat Tuanku, kudos to HRH for speaking up. Tuanku did a great job befitting his highness' position as the protector of Islam in Selangor. Sanctity of the religion has to be defended against political agendas and matters of governance. To those blokes from PAS, learn a thing or two from history, will you? When the Europeans separated government/politics from religion, they walked into Renaissance, and the rest is history. That's why Islamic civilizations all over the world are still in the dark ages. You are not even near the achievements of Ummayyad Caliphate and its contemporaries. Anyway, I am grateful to have an enlightened ruler such as DYMM Sultan Selangor. Daulat Tuanku.

Having written the passage above, I wish to emphasize that I am not a Muslim-hater, nor a racist bigot. What's so disheartening is that so many people have a warped sense of justice and fairness, and defending their views as if written in stone. How Islamic can that be? Islam encourages discursions and rationale, and on top of that, Islam is about justice and peace. If our fellow Malaysians cheer everytime they hear news about Israelis killed by Palestinians, or US soldiers killed by Iraqis etc., how Islamic is that? If some individuals vowed to wash their weapons in Chinese blood (you know who I am talking about), how Islamic is that? If there are people publicly humiliating another human being in the name of Islam (like what happened with our snoop squads from JAWI and RELA), how Islamic is that? That, my friend, I wish to know.

Maybe for the benefit of non-Muslims please can you educate us these tough words. ".... As for the so-called Muslims, if you do not wish to observe .. hukum, thats entirely between you and Allah but do not try to belittle those hukums as it leads to Murtad".

Agree with you that Democracy guarantees freedom of speech and expression. We must learn to Agree to Disagree. It is a healthy way to let people express themselves rather than forcing them to retreat to their inner self.

Can we learn a lesson or two from the July London bombing by some Muslim kids. Pent up furstrations and anger is unhealthy. It is better to let people blow their safety valve before they explode altoghther and taking others with them. This is the lessons of the the London bombing.

Anyway, tell those kids never mind, lah, mari mari kita main bola. They have said their piece. The world is getting tougher by the day.

If we all believe in freedom of expression, why must we shut these PAS youth? we can express our opposite opinions and reason with them. Some of us can even go ahead with the concert and the group can go ahead with their demo. but asking them to shut up is not consistent with the "freedom" and "human rights" we have been preaching.

Asking PAS youth to shut up is undemocratic. It goes against all the principles of humanity. But, one should be responsible for his/her own actions. Likewise, the PAS Youth should be prepared to receive criticisms when they issued this request.

PAS youth is slowly turning back the clock to the dark ages. Since PAS youth is so righteous about their beliefs may I say that you can now rape your women freely, abuse and kill them whenever you feel like it. PAS youth must not study because it is haram. Don't drive cars or watch TV because they are all work of 'Satan". Only morons do that and PAS youth is the perfect example of how to destroy society.

And there you have it. Yet another self-appointed idiot who thinks that by shouting out crudities like he has above he has made an intelligent point. All he has done is to show himself up to be a badly brought up, ill-mannered character with no ability to control himself.

And why should the others not protest against the steady but relentless push for Islamisation when it will definitely affect their lives no matter how much those fundamentalists like PAS might like to try to deceive them that it won't?? They have their rights and no amount of screaming vulgarities at them is going to take it away. Don't think that by trying to isolate yourselves under the pretext of "This is our religion", you are in any way making them feel at ease. They are worried because the kind of repressive, oppressive control that PAS Youth wants so desperately to enforce on the people is to make a prison for all people by denying them their freedoms.

Worse, it will segregate the people, which is already in practice with the constant reference to Malaysians as "Muslims and non-Muslims", "Malays and non-Malays". As if Malaysians cannot be referred to by their own individual identities or as just Malaysians as a people. It seems almost as if they want Malaysians to slot themselves into these two specific categories and that there is a big divide between them. Do you see the "Muslims and the non-Muslims" interacting much with each other?

Likewise, those who are objecting to the move by PAS Youth, unfair and misplaced as it is, why not put your points across without resorting to obscene language. This is a place to exchange views, to disagree and to challenge even. But it is not a place to placate your feelings by using vulgarities.

Don't lower yourself to the level of uncivilized creatures.

Dear Leon,

Islam is simple. It means to surrender to gods will. Amongst its teachings are various values such as compassions, justice and peace. But, there is a law that governs Muslims in everything that they do. Hence, what PAS youth did was to voice it out. Are we now going to lynch them for practicing their belief? As long as they are not forcing anyone, let them be. Those who do not agree with PAS youth can always present their side of the argument. There is no need for hostility. Criticize them if you must but do not let your emotion runs free as the comments may hurt others who doesn't have anything to do with it. Your later post reflects my thoughts. Cheers.

Dear expat70,
Are bombing and terrorism confined to the Muslims? Ever heard of IRA or Tamil EELAM? Please do not generalize. Be fair to us too. Islam means to surrender to God Almighty. Rejecting his command/law means rejecting him as God. Hence, Murtad. Not so difficult to understand. Committing sin does not make you a Murtad but rejecting his command/law will. How to reject and still surrender? Islam is not a buffet or smorgasboard where you pick and choose what you want only. Take it or leave it. Whether you accept or not, He is not affected because He's God the Almighty. Who are we to dictate our term to Him?

Dear gromy,
Need I say more? If all Malaysians share your view, we can all go and demonstrate against one another without any violence. Hell, we'll probably have a lot of fun doing it!!!!

Dear Areyaar,
I'd love to "agree to disagree" with you!! Cheers.

Dear sufc,
Do not judge, lest you be judged. Everyone is entitled to their views and opinion.

I WONT BE GENERALISING HERE, BUT THESE have always been a consistent findings for the last 50 years...

ALL THESE political youth wings HAVE DONE nothing for the country except talking political crap, cheap issue, self glorifying, trying to champion bullshit issue hoping to be the next echelon of leaders...

UMNO youths with their kris waving was one, now PAS youth is talking crap....

OKAY, if you say we non-moslem stays out of moslem issue and let you solve and fight it amongst yourself...OKAYYYYYYYYY goooood.

I will just buy a ringside seat and clap clap clap clap...
'
But how the f...k can you prove that it wont affect the rest of us?

Before, moslem laws for moslem only, goooooooood, but was that practiced?

Kelantan, even non-moslem have to follow moslem dress code? FFFFF UUUUU !!

and when a fanatic kelantanese officer got transferred to Sabah, his first rule was..... WHY ARENT THE MEN SITTING ON LEFT SIDE, WOMEN ON RIGHT SIDE?

we told him..... FFFFFF UUUUU, go back to Kelantan...

SO as long as I am a rightful Malaysian citizen, I have every fffffg right to comment on every religion that affects every Malaysian lives

HOW THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE if we get rid of ALL religion in this world, because we all know that religion is only a tool for the FFKG politician to hold on to power and moneyl....

go to hell you hipocrite politicians...

Macakmy,

Yes, Islam is simple. It is cunning, destructive human beings who complicate it.

You said: “But, there is a law that governs Muslims in everything that they do. Hence, what PAS youth did was to voice it out…As long as they are not forcing anyone, let them be.”

Macakmy, there isn’t just one law but a series of laws that govern Muslims in everything that they do. And going by how selective our judgemental “righteous” proclaimers are it is as if they pick and choose the laws that they think, THEY THINK, mind you, are the ones that people should live by. How conveniently they have ignored other laws, consistently and without flinching. And why is there this obscene obsession with what women wear, what they do, where they go, what they can be “allowed” to do?? Women cannot take part in beauty contests, but men can slip on their tiny speedos and participate in body building contests. Selective process, yeah? And wasn't there a fatwa against smoking? Where are the judgemental "righteous" ones on this??

You yourself said it so concisely: “Islam is not a buffet or smorgasboard where you pick and choose what you want only.” Now do tell those judgemental “righteous” sorts the same thing.

Also, apart from the laws, one must also absorb the very spirit of the religion. There is a significant difference in people between what appears to be and what actually is.

You also said that as long as PAS Youth are not forcing anyone, let them be.

They were very definitely trying to force their demands otherwise why did they threaten to demonstrate when they know full well that this would cause embarrassement to the State government and HRH, the Sultan??? Is not the Sultan the head of religion in his own state? Were they questioning his authority?

Mind you, all said and done, PAS Youth has the right to state their point of view. But this has to be done with dignity and due respect to all. They could have sent a formal letter outlining their views to the organizers of the event, or the State government, who could then choose to pay heed or completely ignore their requests. But threatening to demonstrate is just what it is, a threat.

But I do completely agree with you when you say that commentators can “criticize them if you must but do not let your emotion runs free as the comments may hurt others who doesn't have anything to do with it.”

Hi Macakmy,

Thanks for the explanation.

Agree with you, bombing and terrorism is not only confined to the Muslims alone. I should have also included the notorious IRA, Tamil Tigers, Basque Terrorists in Spain and so on.

However, taking religion aside, the fundamental distinction between the London bombers and the rest is that they are ordinary law abiding children. Whereas the IRA, Tamil Tigers and Basque Terrorists are adults band on violence to make their political points heard.

Therefore, it follows that in a democratic system like in Malaysia, if there is no avenue for ordinary law abiding citizens to air their views, can we learn a lesson from the London bombing??

Mind you, I am for freedom of speech and expression. That’s my point. I am not against any religion either. Like you have said, Islam is not a buffet or smorgasboard where you pick and choose what you want only. And I fully agree with you. There is no religion that will teach violence.

God Be With You

Dear Areyaar and expat70,

Thanks for your sensible and non-destructive comments. I am not trying to force Islam down anyone's throat. I am not a good Muslim. I practically sinned everyday on a regular basis. But, I will not go to the extend of proclaiming that it is acceptable Islamic practice to do so. The difference is, I accepted God's rule and admitted my faults. What irks me is the "Muslims" that acted against the rules and justifying it by putting labels such as "liberal", "hadhari" and whatever fancy names they can think of. These sends the wrong message to the non-Muslims and that is the real problem. The non-Muslims are wary enough without instilling more fears. What I am trying to say is that we should not judge people by their "religion".

People use all kind of excuses to justify their own actions and wrong-doings. In most instances, it has nothing to do with the teachings but only serve to advance their own personal agendas. Bigot, racists and extremists comes in all form, shape and sizes. Don't let them pull us down to their level.

As to the question "Therefore, it follows that in a democratic system like in Malaysia, if there is no avenue for ordinary law abiding citizens to air their views, can we learn a lesson from the London bombing??", I don't have the answer that may satisfy all but to me MT is a good place as any. My only request is for sensible, calm and rational arguments. Please refrain from racist, vulgar and disruptive comments as they only serve to aggravate people. Bear in mind that the general majority are not terrorists, extremists or fanatics. Let democracy rule at least on MT until the day we have it in Malaysia.

Dear Sabahfan,
I never said that non-Muslims are not welcome to comment on Islamic issues. But, if you do, please do so in a calm and rational manner. Get the facts right and present your arguments. That way, nobody in control of his/her faculty will have a reason to be hurt. Cheers.

As for the main issue of this article, PAS youth has said their piece and HRH the Sultan has put in his views. No punches were thrown, nobody was arrested and nobody was forced into something they do not want. So, why are we getting so worked up? Let them sort it out. By all means tell them your views. But again, as I say, do it calmly and rationally. God forbid that we be just another group of BN goons from a different camp.

God be with all of us. Amin.
