78 sen more for petrol by August PDF Print E-mail
Posted by Super Admin

The price of petrol will rise by 78 sen by August, from the present RM1.92 per litre to RM2.70.

The move, announced by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad, is one of the government measures to cut the rising subsidy bill for petrol, diesel and gas, which is expected to cost RM56 billion this year.

To offset the higher fuel price, the government will offer rebates to motorists.

Under the scheme, vehicles below 2,000cc will receive a RM625 rebate annually to compensate for 800 litres of fuel used under the new price.

Motorcycles will be given a rebate of RM120. The money will be paid through postal orders.

Besides fuel, the government subsidises and control prices on a list of essential items to keep prices low, but fuel subsidy constitutes the biggest expenditure to stabilise prices.

Apart from the huge drain on the national budget, smuggling is one unwanted side effect and another strong argument for removing artificial price controls.

But with many Malaysians used to low petrol prices relative to the world market, removal of subsidies will always be an unpopular and politically difficult decision to make.

Hence, restructuring the fuel subsidy so that the selected needy group will not be hard hit by much higher open market prices seems the reasonable option to take.

Shahrir has said under the new subsidy system, fuel would be subsidised based on need rather than usage.

A straight forward subsidy as granted previously meant those who benefit most are those who use the most fuel, for instance, owners of large-capacity engine vehicles. They are mostly in the high-income bracket, the group that can most afford to pay full market price for petrol or diesel.

A new scheme also had to be considered due to the escalating subsidy bill likely to top RM56 billion if world crude prices don't pull back from the current level of around US$130 a barrel. Diesel is subsidised by RM2 a litre.

The government last raised prices for gasoline, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas in February 2006, when crude oil futures were near a then-record high of about US$70 a barrel.

The recent ban on petrol and diesel sale to foreign-registered vehicles at the northern border was explained as not wanting visitors to come into the country just to buy subsidised fuel.

Foreign-registered motorcycles, though, are exempted as a reprieve to low-income earners in Thailand and Singapore.

Shahrir has also said that with food prices going up, "we have to think if subsidising petrol alone is worthwhile. The challenge is also to try to maintain food prices at a reasonable level."

On Malaysian owners of Singapore-registered vehicles, he said while he sympathised with them, the 50km ban was just a minor inconvenience. "I think Malaysians who are paid wages in Singapore dollars and who buy Singapore cars should be able to accept the inconvenience and go and buy petrol outside Johor."

MCA Youth secretary-general Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, though, has urged that such drivers be exempted from the ban because they are Malaysians obliged to drive Singapore-registered cars to their island workplace.

He is also against the blanket 50km ban and instead asked that Singaporeans be allowed to buy petrol at unsubsidised prices. He appealed that rules imposed on Johor should be "practical." - The Malaysian Insider

liar BN. i remembered that before election, they said no fuel hike, but now they immediately increase it. DEFECTION pls.

not that i am against fuel hike, but if the plan is to lift subsidy, do not promise the voters that BN will not raise the fuel prices. this is call outright cheating your voters.

if the govt wants to lift subsidy, by all means go ahead when the petrol prices was hovering USD55 per barrel. why only do it now? thinking that you can earn from RM1.92 per liter then when Crude was only USD55?

OUTRIGHT LiAR BN.

It is definitely going to be nightmares for all Malaysians as most products are in some ways dependant or related to fuels. Transportation costs will increased, construction costs will increase, in fact most things will increase except salaries.
If you look at the comparison chart, the oil producing countries can keep oil prices low for its citizens because there is less corruption. And bcos the way BN has governed and created "gravy trains" for all those negotiated contracts, we the rakyat has to suffer. Is that fair ? If we asked to tighten up, is the Govt and its cronies going to give up all its "riches" illegally gained? We need to see more urgency by the Govt to control costs before they ask us to pay more. Go for open tenders for all contracts incl Penang 2nd bridge etc.
Otherwise, I think this PM should step down and let a better man takes over.

You would find many cheats lining up to claim for the rebates. They know how to beat the system. A little hanky-panky here and there. With their accomplices in the Civil service of course. That's my 1st impression. How much the new priciing would hurt us has not sunk in yet until the time come August. Then another round of infaltionary prices. Roti, noodles, nasi ayam, teh terik and the list goes on. Thanks to Bank Negara for reminding us our national exports jumped by 30 or 40% year-to-year? This is what the consumers gain by these good-sounding stats.

It seems to me that the Government depends so much on oil money to run the country. Are we so bankrupt of other natural resources that could contribute to the incomes of this country? OR we are just having an half-past-six government that thought NEP is the engine of our economy? Who are they trying to fool??

Subsidies will reach RM56 billion this year. Malaysiakini reports that this new scheme will save us Rm4 billion. It is a lot of money but it is clearly not enough. AAB is adopting half measures if not half baked ones. Instead of saving money, he is giving them away. Rebates should only be iven to vehicles below 1000cc. Anything above that should pay a petrol levy. We are still subsidising petrol and smuggling will still continue and we will still lose billions! Rm52 billion this year to be exact.

While the price of crude oil has risen two-fold in a year, the production cost remain the same. Petronas has been very efficiently producing at less than USD 10 per barrel. Exxon and Shell are not too far off. Meaning that these companies are making tonnes of money while the public suffers.

Why is the government so stupid not to introduce the windfall gain tax?

I'd like to request the 82 PR MPs to press for special Dewan Rakyat sitting to deliberate this bread and butter issue.

...and they're increasing the fuel to RM2.70 this coming august.

...with rebate. (very small amount of rebate)

they (the ministers!) get the rebate for their kids if they buy each of their kids a perodua kancil. their kids use their dad's money to fuel up the car. their dad's money of course claimable as they are ministers. ****...

i use RM50 for my motorbike fuel every month. with the new price, it will be around RM70 monthly and i will get rebate RM10 for each month (RM120 per year). That means, I still have to pay extra RM10... itu belum kira makan minum susu anak etc etc... for sure prices will hike one! I wonder why they getting arrogant even after the election result like this. They didnt get the message.. WE RAKYAT ARE SUFFERING. WE DONT WANT MORE SUFFERINGS PLEASE...

Even Mainstream Media are in disagreement:

From the Star Online:

Petrol to cost RM2.20 from midnight
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Wednesday announced the new price for petrol is RM2.20 a litre, effective midnight tonight.

The 14.5% increase in price is part of the new fuel subsidy plan he announced at 5pm Wednesday.

NST Online:

BREAKING NEWS: Petrol will be RM2.70 a litre at midnight tonight
The new price of premium leaded petrol (ULG 97) is RM2.70 per litre beginning midnight tonight, it was announced a moment ago. The price for ULG 92 petrol per litre went up by 74 sen. Diesel will go up by RM1 per litre. The 78 sen hike or 40 per cent increase for the ULG 97 petrol is still below the antiticpated RM4 per litre price projected earlier and among the cheapest in Asia.

I'm not shocked. I'm not appalled. I'm not disappointed.

UMNO and their cabal have repeatedly done what had expected them to do. Whatever happened to the billions and billions of profit by Petronas? Well, can't expect an answer there.

And BERNAS was setup to do what? Help the rakyat by rationing rice supply or monopolizing the market? Can't expect an answer from there as well.

They will continue plundering as much as they could to the very last day they're in the office. Even when the world market was pointing to inflation, they were so full of arrogance in saying that Malaysia can weather the storm. I guess what they meant was they themselves and their cronies can weather the storm. And then they tell the rakyat to thrifty in our spending. While they build some Hadari Park right in the middle of the poorest state in Malaysia with a Crystal Mosque no less. And don't forget the many corridors that have been launched!

Nope. I am not disappointed with them. I expected them to do just that.

I was only disappointed when Pakatan Rakyat didn't take over the Federal Government in the PRU12. I do hope Pakatan Rakyat would do so real soon.

I am really pissed with this statement...
"But with many Malaysians used to low petrol prices relative to the world market,"

Compare next time apple to apple, not orrange to apple! why are this gov people cant think with commonsense! If you say Singaporeans are paying more petrol price compared to Malaysian, because they more then average malaysia.

per capita income of singaporeans by World Bank data is $44,707, how about average malaysian earning? Are Malaysian per capita income is RM44,707?? Malaysian are still fighting for minimum salary need!!

Another pissed off statement "MCA Youth secretary-general Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, though, has urged that such drivers be exempted from the ban because they are Malaysians obliged to drive Singapore-registered cars to their island workplace."

For real life example, a singaporeans can buy a new Handycam for $500, but can you buy RM500 worth of our money a new Handycam?? Their buying power is high, our is very low.

And the part of Malaysians working in Singapore, buying Singapore cars and stay in JB. Come on take a break.. you guys earn and pay Singapore Income tax, and you had been paid by Sing Dollars, not MYR, so are we Malaysians suppose to pay somemore for you to fill up your tank and still you enjoy Sing Dollar salary??

This is what happen when office boy, tukang jaga pintu keretapi, and kaki bodek jadi politicians! No brains except stupid facts....

It would not have mattered much if Malaysian major cities besides KL and Penang have good public transportation that could cushion the blow. But the state of our public transportation is still appalling throughout the country with major cities like JB and Ipoh do not have any comprehensive public transportation(buses that run on schedule, not buses that mak ciks take to go to market). I do not now how people outside KL and Penang would cope.

Bodohwi promised to expand the Klaqng Valley LRTs and Penang Monorail, till now these projects are not executed yet while KTM Komuter services is fast crumbling with half its fleet wiped out due to lack of spare parts and our smart government forgot to buy trans for the Rawang-Ipoh line despite the line having finished for almost 2 years.Where are the RM10 billion the Hadhari regime promised for public transportation!!!

Let's get real, folks. Malaysia is actually a very rich country. With loads of natural resources (including Sabah and Sarawak), we would have become a very prosperous nation by now. If not for the bad spending habit and when the coffers are empty, they turn to corruption at the expense of squeezing the rakyat's hard-earned money. You reap what you sow. Can you imagine way back before TDM became the PM, how much the nation would have made by now if we hadn't bail out so many failures by choice??? Now he is announcing all sorts of gifts for Sabah and Sarawak MPs (Only MPs, mind you) so as to prevent them doing the katak. Where is Abdullah getting that money from? The next target could be Health, Education and Infrastructures. Just we watch.

In fact, we Malaysian is on the way of Zimbadwe or Myanmar.

In all honesty, I think this rebate style scheme is better than the current fuel subsidy scheme. Small businesses, people who drive motor vehicles for a living, e.g. lorry drivers, taxi drivers, will be particularly hit hard though. The government need to give better rebates to these people/businesses. As for normal consumers, from now on people will pay more attention on the cars they buy, smaller, greener cars. Car pool if possible, be creative! If it is not necessary to drive then don't drive. Malaysians are too used to driving everywhere, even down the road to buy something. Disgraceful. However we need to make sure that proceeds from this fuel hike will go into improving public transports. I honestly think this is a step in the right direction, as at least fuel smugglers, including those who live on the border to Thailand and Singapre, will find it more difficult to take advantage of our fuel. I think the British government should introduce rebate too, to drivers who drive different categories of cars. This ensures that the affluents are taxed more, and not the poor. And encourages people to drive smaller, greener cars.

We all have to take our hats off to bodowi (khairy is the actual PM & making this swift & painful move, get it over & done with-kind-of-thingy???) that he dared to do this - everyone was thinking August - still got time to live on 1.92. Tonight the whole town, oops city, I mean, jammed up, everyone trying to fill up their tanks, cursing, swearing, some on the verge of tears.

This country is so pathetic, the bn citizens I mean. Come every election, the frigging idiots tell me, parlimentary seat, "will vote Opposition" but state seat "will vote BN". This country is so ****-up thanks to these people who are stupid, ignorant, so cocksure they are doing the right thing to return bn to power.

This country will definitely go into recession. The economy will crash slowly & I am glad my conscience is clear. I have NEVER voted BN. BN mismanaged for decades, starting today, we are screwed permanently. Electricity bills up 25%, everything else will cost more disproportionately. This country is irreversibly ****ed-up.

You think so easy to commute by car pooling with strangers? Just don't get robbed, ok?

We elected the useless government of all time -- BN/UMNO !!!

An oil producing country has the most expensive oil/gas for their peasant.
The gas price was more expensive then in the U.S. (remember U.S. is by gal, and the people earn in US dollars, so do your math and see how much they pay in a lit.)

Rescue Malaysia !

It has been reported that among the measure taken to reduce the petrol subsidy is the direct cash payments to motorcyclists and small car owners.

This is the stupidest decision I have ever known in my entire life. It shows the low calibre of the people in our Badawi’s Cabinet.

1.A large number of those two cannot afford motorcycles and small cars take buses to go to work. When petrol price increases, it is a foregone conclusion that the bus owners will increase the fares. Instead of helping the poor, this category of people will be hit by a double whammy – increased bus fares and increase in prices of food, goods and services and everything else!

2.A new small car costs much more than a second hand car. For example, a small new 850cc Kancil cost $27,000 can carry about 4 persons albeit with some difficulty but a second hand 2500cc Volvo 850 costs about $15,000 could carry goods and 5-6 people easily without problem. In fact, we do find a lot of poor kampong folks driving big, old but cheap continental cars/vans/jeeps because it is more suitable for carrying farm produce as well for transporting their large families. Again they will be hit by a double whammy- increase in price of petrol and everything else!

3.In a poor family of 10 people, only one can afford a small car which is used to make 2 trips to transport everybody. Only one will receive a small petrol payment (for one trip) and the other 9 members will have to bear the increased prices of petrol (for 2nd trip), food and everything else.

4.The huge increase in price of petrol will cause a chain reaction on the increase in prices of other goods and services. Whatever small amounts received by the motorcyclist and small car owners will be largely negated by the more than disproportionate increase in prices of goods and services.

5.In Malaysia, the heavier burden is caused by cost of travelling to work. The cost of travelling will have to include:

1. toll charges,
2. amortisation of the vehicle's cost over the economic useful life of the vehicle, or, for those who have obtained loan financing, the monthly loan repayments,
3. the annual vehicle maintenance cost (tyres, brake pads, engine oil, spark plugs, etc)
4. road tax,
5. Parking; and
6. petrol

If you analyse above carefully a huge chunk of the expenses goes to car amortisation cost and toll charges. Everyone who has travelled overseas knows for a fact that Malaysia has one of the highest numbers of tolls in the country and very high excise duties on cars.

Take a real life example of a typical average worker in Malaysia earning a take home pay after deducting EPF of RM 2,000 a month. He drives a small Kancil (cost RM27,000) and travels to and from work each day from his home in Cheras averaging about 40 km. His typical monthly travelling cost is:

Amortisation of car for 10 years ($27,000/10/12)………….$225
Petrol (based on current price)………………………………………… ……….$200
Maintenance of car…………………………………………… ….……..$100
Road Tax ($50/ 12)…………………………………………… ……………….$4
Parking ……………………………………………… ………….………………$90
Total Travelling Cost per Month……………………………………$619
Percentage of Travelling Cost to Take-Home Pay……………………….31%

It simply does not make sense that the use of vehicle for travelling to work to earn revenue for the country would be a whopping 31% of his take home pay for a country that is a net exporter of oil. That does not even include his payment for the increased price of petrol and monthly expenditure for food, housing loan, medical expenses, children schooling expenses, etc, which are certain to increase if the prices of petrol increase.

continue...

It makes stupid sense to make a small amount of cash repayments to a small portion of the citizens but the cost of tolls, food, goods and services keep on escalating. Even then, the administrative costs and nightmare of keeping track of the entire motorist and small car owner population including the appeals of disgruntled owners, etc, on a monthly basis would cast doubt on whether the implementation is feasible. I don’t know whether they are aware that not all registered owners are the actual users of the vehicle and how the repayments could go to the actual persons intended.

This way of abrupt petrol price increase would be disastrous to the nation and once the negative chain reactions (stock market crash, run away inflation, economic slowdown, corporate under-budgets, etc) happen, the nation might not recover from it for a long time.

It is haphazard decision hastily decided by a low calibre Badawi cabinet. An important decision of this nature which has a rippling effect on the whole nation show be studied by a competent team of economist, academicians and thinkers, not by shallow thinking cabinet ministers!

The present UMNO regime has hoodwinked the citizens long enough by just comparing the petrol price with selective non-oil producing countries without taking into consideration the related travelling cost and the cost of living!

Logic will tell you that a fisherman cannot have a same cost of fish as his neighbour who is a farmer!

Meanwhile, oblivious to others, UMNO will be splurging the oil revenue by spending on themselves, their cronies and on other less prioritised projects! UMNO realised that it may be their last term in power and used the opportunity to enrich themselves as much as possible before they are kicked out by the rakyat!

Only the kampong folks may be duped by UMNO! The citizens have had enough of the half-truth of UMNO!

The citizens demand transparency on the accounts of Petronas and how were these revenue been used! Petronas is not “bapa punya” of UMNO – it belongs to every citizens of Malaysia!

Which stupid idiot equates rich or poor with the cc of the vehicles?

An average office clerk may own a second hand proton Iswara costing $7,000 (rebate = $625)

While Robert Kuok’s children can own a fleet of 10 new cars of BMW, Audi and Volvo all less than 2000cc costing $2 millions and get a total rebate of $625 x 10 = $6,250!

This stupid minister claims that this policy helps the poor more than the rich? I think his brain should be equated to the cc of cars!

How are they going to identify who gets the RM625 & who doesn't? How are they going to post out 10,000,000 cheques every year assuming there are 10,000,000 vehicles below 2,000cc capacity? Again and again, this useless govt is proving that they are reactive rather than proactive. They don't THINK through what they are implementing. They rush headlong into it.

This is what I heard: the gov't will raise petrol prices 70sen every month starting June till August. So if you don't know, come 30days, you will jump higher with anger when the price jumps another 70 or 78sen. Totally no more subsidies by end-August. World market price for crude oil will dictate our petrol pump prices. Forget abt the billions Petronas is making, they are reserved for special bumiputras only. End of story.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it true that if the whole country comes to a mutual understanding not to purchase petrol let say over the weekends, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD
CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES?

If it's true we should all plan and work together towards the idea.

I'm no mathematician, but could someone explain how is this possible?

I don't think Malaysians would mind paying market prices for petrol if we can pay market prices for cars.

Alternately, buy an air car and never pay for petrol again:

I think we should all think through this carefully. Those who are blaming the present administration are barking up the wrong the trees and blaming the wrong people. Think.

Who is responsible for the present mess? Think. Who instituted the fuel subsidies in the first place? Think. Who inititiated the Proton project and the car industry when Malaysia had/has no competitive and comparative advantages in the car industry? Think.

Why Proton and the car industry is to be blamed? Because in order to make it a “success”, the prices of local cars were/are artificially kept low so that more people can afford to buy them. In other words, many who shouldn’t be buying cars bought them. And to make it even more viable to buy cars, petrol and diesel are subsidized heavily.

Be fair people. Who is to be blamed?
