Malaysia's opposition plans no confidence vote by mid-September PDF Print E-mail

(The Earth Times) - Anwar Ibrahim, the de facto leader of Malaysia's opposition, told reporters Wednesday he wants bring a motion of no confidence against the ruling government by the middle of September.

During a press conference in Singapore, Anwar told reporters "we have the numbers, we can move," adding that his People's Justice Party needed just 30 members to gain a simple majority in parliament.

His party controls 82 seats in the legislature.

Anwar's comments come two days after Malaysia's former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, 83, announced Monday that he will quit the ruling United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) party that he has helmed for 22 years.

Anwar, 60, was ousted from government in 1998 by Mahathir in a power struggle amid accusations of corruption and sodomy.

Anwar denied the charges, but served prison time for corruption which prevented him from holding public office until April 14, meaning he could not run in the March 8 general elections.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's ruling UMNO-led National Front coalition failed to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament during the March 8 poll and lost a total of five states to the opposition, recording the party's worst election performance since the country's independence more than 50 years ago.

Anwar, an ethnic Malay, has said any government he forms will change Malaysia's system of promoting majority ethnic Malays over ethnic Chinese and Indian Malaysians for government contracts, jobs and education.

The highest priority is "political stability, security and peace," said Anwar.

He gave September 16, which commemorates the establishment of the Malaysian federation in 1963, as the date the no confidence vote will be held by.

Anwar added that he was confident that ruling party members would defect to his side.

All I hear from Anwar is talk, talk and talk. He is exciting the entire nation with his words... but after sometime, one will ask, if this is just talk and where is the action!! ??

Come on!!, I want him to succeed... but where are the results of his talk lah?

Looking forward to the day when Malaysia is truly "liberated" from the iron grip of communal "divide and rule" politics. Power to the People!!!

I am taking his stand with a fair bit of reservation. For such a tactical move, you would not normally reveal your cards and mention the strategic time. Unless he has something else in mind to set up a red herring. I'm not buying that claim. Not as simple as that. Especially when the stakes are so huge. Either he stays shrewed or he's just plain silly to reveal his call. I'm not buying he's not a poker player when it comes to politics.

No, Anwar is playing mind games with UMNO giving them 100 instances and exits but he has ONE plan. It is a way of confusing them. He is a warlord who knows the system more than any other person. I'm aware that he gets direct information about all UMNO meetings even the Supreme Council. He has his "men" inside.

No worry. Anwar won't disclose his planning unless he actually has something else in his mind and thats the real one. Sept 16? No, much earlier than that...

Indianputra...It's only two months since the election, do you think that this is a football match? even if you resign, you need to provide 2 months notice!!!! Here, Pakatan is talking about forming Federal Government.. not football club president and committee. Guys, we need to give them time...it's a lot of shit to clean up..we're looking at 50 years of shit.. before they can implement any economic growth policies. *******s from indon eg toyo needs to cough out all that he has wollap from selangor..mahathir from country..

I can foresee the sales for high-tech shredding machines will be so good that it may not cope with the suddent surge of demand in Sept. Now we are talking about the whole country not just Selangor! So for the automation companies, please keep enough stock.

Simple comparison of Malaysia to Singapore

Malaysia
Big land , rich natural resources, abundance of agricultural produce, bright people willing to work and excel but no opportunity .
Bad politicians holding the office with NEP , many quotas and cronies, happily forcing brain drain to its neighbours.
Poor country rating in many aspects , few foreign investment, sliding backwards compare to neighbours.

Singapore
Miniature land, no natural resources,no agriculturall produce, bright people willing to excel, abundance of opportunities base on merit.
Good politicians and leaders ,no NEP, transparent, and happily receive brain drains from Malaysia.
Top rating in all aspects, overflowing foreign investments, beat all its neighbours flat economically.

See the above difference ??? Go figure how off-track into the mud has Malaysia been the last 50 years !!!!!

Dear DSAI - I am sure you can cause the change to Malaysia.
I think we can grow together with Singapore, mutual win-win to make this part of the world a world-class and respectable destination for anyone, investors, tourist, etc and most of all, a land where its people and the country have hearts for each other

Indianputra, relax my friend. The BN defectors are trying to milk as much as they can from Pak Lah by using Anwar as a hedge. They have nothing to lose by playing this game. So long as they remain in BN, they have implicit power, but once they defect, they cannot reverse course so easily, unless the defect by forming a new party. So for the time being, the real power lies in these so-called defectors, not Anwar.

DSAI knows what he is doing. He is just waiting for the right time to make the move. So relax and wait for the good news. He is not flip-flop like AAB instead a mastermind with systematic approach.

BTW i agree with Motherchell, please watch your back DSAI at all time. We do not know what this BN goons are up to.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Once YAB DSAI becomes the PM, YM RPK will be free, safe and sound. DSAI will abolish the ISA using a month's time. At last we have a true malaysian to rule this country unlike previously, we had *****s and indonesians, pakistanis, etc. running this country. Before this, DSAI will of course 'ISA' those goons before it is abolished. DSAI will appoint YM RPK to an important post, if RPK refuses to be home minister, he will be appointed special advisor to promote transparency and democracy. Hidup DSAI & RPK!

Anwar's enjoying this, I'm sure being the political enemy that he is but I wonder if it is not just Badawi who is fiddling while Malaysia burns? Perhaps the price we have to pay for a change is high, but this constant speculation is not helping the country.

If his bluff is called, he'll be lying flat on a heap of sh*t. Face it, he has great rhetoric, but if he fails he'll have quite a record as a nearly man:

1. Nearly got the IMF in-Mahathir vetoed (thankfully)
2. Nearly became PM but was too impatient to wait (unfortunately)
3. Nearly managed to get BN to 'win' teh 1994 Sabah state election by using all legal and illegal forces at his disposal (PBS still won, just).

I wouldn't like to see no. 4
4. Almost became PM after Badawi but blew a huge mandate in 2004 by miscalculaing again....

While we are impatient, with hindsight we see Anwar is right in waiting. As he said, umno is in deep trouble and the Alliance can wait.

Let us leave the political gamesmanship to him.
