Anwar to push for a more transparent Petronas PDF Print E-mail

(The Edge) - While acknowledging that Petronas was one of the better run oil companies in the region, de facto opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he would push for a more transparent national oil corporation.

He said at the moment Petronas only reports to the prime minister and because of that, there was an issue of transparency.

“Petronas reports to only one person — the prime minister. They don’t report to the Treasury or the Cabinet,” he said.

Fielding a question on how the opposition would deal with the rising cost of fuel, he said that prices could be reduced to send a clear signal that the government is conscious of the hardship felt by the people.

“It is the humane side that any country must show,” he told an audience of investors, merchant banks, fund managers and business leaders during a luncheon talk organised by CLSA here yesterday.

On the top three priorities for the opposition should they come into power, Anwar said that firstly, it would be the dismantling of the policies advocated by the New Economic Policy (NEP) and replacing it with the Malaysian Economic Agenda (MEA), which promotes transparent processes and competitive bidding.

Secondly, Anwar said that they would focus on Malaysia regaining investor confidence and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).

“The whole approach must be different. There must be a clear, transparent regulatory framework to provide all possible incentives to ensure Malaysia is competitive in attracting FDI,” he said.

The third priority for the opposition would be to channel more efforts in improving and enhancing Malaysia’s human capital and education system.

He said that the University of Singapore (which can trace its origins from University of Malaya) was among the top three in Asia while University of Malaya was among the top 200.

Anwar said that in the 1960s, his concern was on the insecurity of the Malays. But now, he was confident that the Malays were well equipped to compete. He said that to ensure Malaysia was successful, there cannot be double standards to discriminate against the non-Malays.

Should also be more efficient like a huge successful private corporation. I believe Petronas can actually make double or triple the amount its making now!

The problem with our govt Universiti is probably its only meant to churn out more gradutes without consideration for quality. We do hear rumours of foreign lecturers being offer to leave from our local universiti as they not willing to compromise on passing mark (lowering passing mark) to pass out more students.

Need education be closed ended. Why shgould it be so expensive. Looking at the cost of tertiary education, it would seem that only the well do so can afford it.

That cannot be right. Can't it be made cheap or free. Even the open university course ain't cheap. Something must be done so that everyone who wants to have tertiary education can do so.

Yes, make Petronas more transparent by all means but also make it more fair. How many non-Malays today have Petronas scholarships? How many non-Malay Companies are given contracts or sub-contracts by this giant? How many non-Malay employees does Petronas have now? Why this discrimination under the guise of the NEP? Doesn't the petrol from the ground belong to all Malaysians? We are not asking the earth and the moon. We are not questioning affimative action to help our needy Malay brothers and sisters. All we are asking is fair treatment.

I was almost damaged by the NEP era education system (actually 1st batch all malay stream), but thank God, managed to escape the rot by graduating from NUS. Singapore started with nothing but made the appropriate decision, and managed to stay ahead of its neighbours. In fact, Spore's national language is Malay, but the lingua fraca promoted is English being the global language of the day. So Anwar, I hope & pray that PR does not repeat the same mistake by propounding malay language in all subjects in our education system, which has destroyed generations of Malaysians. Empirically, most of our local U graduates are not equipped for the global environment. So not just Petronas, but also on the lingua fraca of our education system....actually, we may have to consider Mandarin if you subscribe to the possibility of China's dominance in the global market in the 21st century. Anyway, let's get the first step right first, promote malay language all you want but not at the expense of English. Godspeed in your efforts DSAI to make Malaysia a better place for all Malaysians, regardless of race, language, religion or class,

Whatever the initiatives that DSAI wants to implement when he comes into power, we have to be realistic about the rising price of oil. The depleting oil fields in the world will only mean that prices will go up higher and higher. By artificially lowering the price of oil through price controls, we will introduce other unsavory elements like hoarding, smuggling and unchecked wanton usage. However, saying as much, I believe that the oil companies are also a little greedy. Just google for their latest financial results and you can see how much they have made from the oil price rise.

I believe that a more sustainable approach is to invest in alternate energy research. Why don't we put the best brains, both local and international, to develop greener cars? In fact, Proton can lead the way (provided it can be pulled from the teat of protectionist policies and start behaving like a commercial entity) and introduce hybrid or even truly non-petrol based cars that run on processed palm oil?

Another possibility is to reduce duties and taxes for imported cars with green credentials. In fact, the government should be bold enough to abolish duties and taxes on hybrid cars to show that they are serious in tackling petrol consumption.

Since Mahathir has resigned from UMNO and on the same ground he should resign as an advisor to Petronas...that would be transparent wouldn't it?
Also why is Petronas depict multi racial Malaysians come various public holidays and cultural celebrations but is it reflected in its employees' composition?
Why sponser such an elitist band as an phiharmoniac orchestra which is an white elephant when RM500million spent on it since inception could go to the poor and build infrastructure for the poor villages in Sabah and Sarawak ?
It is about time Petronas show it is transparent on all grounds not just small talk ony.
DAI...take the lead ..the Pakatan Rakyat wants answers.

Yes, Petronas is a better run company compared to Pertamina.
In the global field, it is way behind. The people there are bureaucratic and inefficient.
If you think you have your little Napoleons in the government, just wait till you encounter those in the Petronas Purchasing & Supply dept. Corrupt, corrupt, corrupt!!!

Petronas musr report and disclose full Financial Statements every year to Parliament.

The 'Nas' in Petronas stands for Nasional or National, not the private bank of the PM!!

I would reserve my comments til I see the financials of Petronas but I know for a fact that their staff are just pencil pushers who depend on the multi national oil companies to do the dirty works. They would accept whatever figures the multi national oil companies present to them and they know next to nothing about the oil business. (I used to work as auditors for an american oil company). The beauty is that Petronas staff are very well paid for what they are doing.

Dear DSAI,

If ever you come to power,
Could we have a Royal Commission as to how the income from our petroleum and gas been spent during TDM's and Pak Lah's era? Is it possible??

Petronas is the goose that lays golden eggs for the UMNOputras. The reason the Entity is kept this way whereby only the PM has a say is ,------ from RPK's latest article;

"""What’s really behind the Mahathir gambit?"""'
you'll see the excerpts of how Diam, etc , and lot of other cronies were bailed out . Well! like wise the next in line Paklah !------ he too, must have thought ------ WOW! what a Midas Manifestation!! Let me also tinker with it !!!

So many cronies , fly by night companies were transfused from Petronas funds..Where do you think all this money came from ?????--- the scandals of how ,many holdings that went under , the owners are all sipping wine in some far out Land now as i type this sentence.

So what DSAI says is true , he would know the pitfalls , of keeping it under the OSA. This kind of rules only benefits the elite. They behave like Petronas belongs to them selves only. This is where i say ,how the elites pull the wool over the Malays eyes and play the race card as a diversion.

Wonder, if all would know PETAMINA in the 70's and 80's under Suharto .... every director , chairman , and their cronies siponed the funds to Singapore banks , and they are Fugitives till now .... some of the reasons Singapore does not have an Extradition Treaty in place with Indonesia .

In my earlier statements of why ASEAN is a failure for the Citizens of each nation because its more a Havana Club for the Ruling Class only to rub each others shoulders . The failure to get Aid into Myanmar is one characteristic truth of its failures . But the ASEAN group photos of each Declaration is mouth watering only to the mouth that meets the eye!!!

So one can so clearly see how this web of deceit is interlinked. How is the audit system working ?? I don't have to accuse , but when its a secret organization--- questions like this arise !!!!!

Syabas DSAI !! Keep up your strengths!!!!!!!!!for a New Malaysia !

Anwar,

Talk so much on the dreams is not much use. We have to take over the goverment now. Jail Mahathir, Najib, Vincent Tan, Tengku Adnan, VK Lingam and Ahmad fairuz. And show the world that Malaysia do not tolerate corruption and abuse of power.

Talk and talk is not going to get Malaysians anywhere.

yes make it transparent and disallow it to channel its funds to bail out any other bodies albeit government or semi-goverment unless approved by parliament (do not allow the government of the day to use the money to bail out any bodies} While looking at that have a look at EPF too. I think enough is enough. These money must not be used to bail out any gov or semi gov bodies. The money must only be used to invest...etc.

One thing they MUST put transparent
1. Scholarship to students - how many from Sabah, Sarawak & Trengganu the oil producing area

2. List of students given scholarship their SPM result

I seen so many while studying in UK who cannot even speak English and they keep on failing every year and yet they still wasn't sent home. My parents have to sell our land and borrow money to send me study. I only recently finished paying for the loan.

How can these people given scholarship when we have hundreds of Malaysian kids who got 9A1s 10A1s and not given scholarship!!! I might not qualify but I want my kids to qualify if they study hard enough instead of sending thousands of idiots who can't even study.

Pakatan Rakyat MPs please ask for us for the list to be put out on newspaper.

How many of these people who is given scholarship by Petronas deserve it?

Petronas can be better managed if all the rampant corruptions among the blue-collared staffs are put to check. They gain kick-backs from projects and over-quoted procurements.

I was with Petronas before. I quit because of constant harassment from vendors requesting favor for projects and/or supply of items.

Hi Carlito & Tony n Jerry,

I share the same sentiment with both of you. My late father was retiring for the civil servant of the British era in Malaysian in early 1907's. Of course he could not have the financial resources to send me for overseas tertiary education.

However, I eventually found my way to the UK and later received a British study grant award for my professional education which lasted for 7 years. I am now a practising professional overseas.

During my time in the UK I came accross many Malaysian students on MARA scholarship. In my mind they were wasting of public funds. There were also alot of poorer students who was on their " parents' scholardhip ". These poor students who should have received government assistance instead. There were students whose parents had to borrow heavily to support their childrens'education. If you would remember that the exchange rate between sterling pound and the ringgit at that time was about 1 to 7. I had fellow college friends whose parents were taxi drivers, hawker stall owners, labourers etc, yet they saw the importance of their childrends' future. In my case my father was near retirement. Sadly before I could repay him in kindness and love in full, he had answered the call of GOD.

Tribute must go to these parents who had selflessly sacrificed for the future of their children despite all odds and the hardship back home.

I hope that both your children have made it and are doing well in their lives.

I pray that Malaysia will continue to change for the better and the government of the day will treat all her citizens fairly regardless of race, religion, colour of their skin, class or creed.

By doing this, it is indeed a Tribute to all Parents, past and present, who had sacrificed and invested so much for their children future and hence the future of Malaysia.

Tribute to All selfless Malaysian Parents - Truely Malaysian

We who walk the path of the Righteous, walk with our heads held high ! Pity almost none of the Petronas management can do that without wilting under our steady gaze, and looking away furtively, the robbers that they are. The PM is the prime robber and the "Little Napoleons" in there are the many little lanuns that make up Petronas !

Re-vamp the whole management and disclose all acounts. THE RAKYAT NEEEDS TO KNOW and has a RIGHT TO KNOW !

It high time to publish Petronas’ accounts to the public for transparency sake, but don’t expect it to be revealed by current BN government.

As usual, don’t be surprised if hundred of million or even billion have been spent, plundered and wasted by BN Government for their selfish agendas
