Why should clear thinking Malaysians not take the opportunity to rejoice and take this as yet another step forward for a new Malaysian cultural and political landscape to bloom post GE12—this time to get rid of all that is vile about the politics of Mahathir, writes Wong Kok Keong.

So, former PM Mahathir Mohamad has decided to leave UMNO until PM Abdullah Badawi resigns as President of UMNO. All Malaysians, including UMNO members, should rejoice!

And why not? Here is a man who, for at least half the life span of independent Malaysia, has corrupted Malaysian politics and economy and poisoned Malaysian culture. Why should clear thinking Malaysians not take the opportunity to rejoice and take this as yet another step forward for a new Malaysian cultural and political landscape to bloom post GE12—this time to get rid of all that is vile about the politics of Mahathir, one who has cynically exploited the diversity of Malaysia for his self-serving politics instead of celebrating and building it into a wonderful whole that is truly Malaysia?

Many academics and analysts writing about Mahathir have long tried to excuse or justify his megalomaniac Manichean politics as though he has something truly meaningful to offer as leader. They are prone or quick to see contradictions in him. But as long as we understand that Mahathir does things only to serve his interests, everything makes sense. There is hardly any contradiction. Today, it's Bangsa Malaysia coming out of his mouth, and the next day he is playing the race card. Only analysts who think he is deep or excuse his self-serving politics will see contradictions. In reality, he is saying one or the other only to advance his interests.

Such is the measure of Mahathir, and academics and analysts would do well to keep this in mind front and center when assessing his place in Malaysian history. The only bit of intriguing question is whether he is aware or not of the kind of person he is. Even so, he likely could not care less one way or the other.

Some also observed that Mahathir’s resignation is in keeping with the history of UMNO, citing past UMNO leaders having difficulties with the current UMNO presidents. Problem is that, aside from Onn Jaafar, Tunku Abdul Rahman and Hussein Onn left UMNO because of one thing only—Mahathir’s leadership as UMNO President. The kind of relationship Mahathir had with past leaders, and now with PM Abdullah, is actually in keeping with his inability to nurture future leaders and his pathological problems with his deputies. Such a character in a leader is what makes for a dictator. And some UMNO members are unhappy with him leaving the party? Well, dictators triumph only when they are people willing to be lorded over.

PM Abdullah's public response to Mahathir's resignation did not show any sign of panic. He was ready to admit the resignation would have some impacts. And while he said he could not really tell as yet the extent of the impact, he gently reminded, instead of harangued or preached to, other UMNO members why it was important to continue to support UMNO. To a question from the press, he rejected outright the idea of having a meeting with Mahathir to talk things over. Really, what’s left to talk about? In short, PM Abdullah was calm, measured and firm.

Abdullah’s passive-aggressive behavior appears to be a good antidote to Mahathir's alpha-male aggression. It has so frustrated Mahathir all along that the latter’s desperate moves as counter responses to Abdullah only served to show just what kind of person he (Mahathir) really is and why his kind of political leadership is so wrong for the country. Although he fails miserably as PM for not living up to his promises to the rakyat, Abdullah may yet prove to be a match for Mahathir! Oh, how richly ironic that would be.

But, of course, one would be overly hasty to conclude that this resignation ploy is the end of what Mahathir is capable of doing in his contempt for Abdullah. Who knows what lies in store next? But one thing is for sure: whatever it is that Mahathir will do next it will yet again show to be motivated by no other reasons than a self-serving one.

The sooner Malaysians come to accept that about him, the sooner the country will be able to see him for what he is, and move on and forward to a new Malaysia post GE-12.

It does look like this man will end up being the PM with the worst image and track record so far. He might just end up behind AAB at the end of it all.

What i envisage is that in future, he will be treated with the same irreverrance as he dished out to the other PM's before him, saved for some cursory compliments. maybe he won't even get any. Maybe they might even put a blank silhouette to represent him in future billboards if he continues with his bitterness and vindictiveness.

Truly, his grandchildren will have something to be ashamed of in him

I agree with the writer wholeheartedly! Lets rejoice! This child play of Mahathir is fascinating! He has dug his own grave! There will be no significant impact of Dr Mahathir quitting UMNO. Media analysts all over Malaysia fail to realise the thinking and rationale of the younger generation of Malaysians, while propagating the views and traditions of the old. The younger lot of Malaysians are not bothered by racist politics of UMNO and other component parties. Those youth who still believe in racism are mainly those from UMNO Youth! It is only in Malaysia that racism and racist remarks are approved operandi of many politicians clamouring for high office.

What is an accepted norm in Malaysia carries severe penalties in other parts of the world.

"Under Section 298 of the Singapore Penal Code, Chapter 224, anyone with deliberate intention of wounding the religious or racial feelings of any person, causes any matter however represented to be seen or heard by that person, can be jailed up to three years, or fine, or both, if convicted."

I challenge the Malaysian legal authorities to toughen your laws on racism and racist remarks that could inflict and disintegrate your nation's multiethnic composition!

Once again Lets rejoice as one united people at the downfall of this tyrant!

Yes, indeed. Lets rejoice. So what he has resigned? Let it be. Very few are going to follow him anyway. It will be status quo in a few days. This racist bigot does not deserve to be even talked about. He has brought our country to its knees with his croynism and is now trying to push it into the ground with his childish dramas. If anything, he should be charged in Court for his dismantaling of the Judiciary and thrown in jail. Yes, lets rejoice indeed.

i understand completely his struggle and his ideology, his vision for this country. he is a man of courage and charisma. a brilliant tactician as well.

but that does not mean to say that he is a righteous man. a righteous man does not make a leader. a righteous man does not make a hero. a righteous man makes a man good.

he has a vision for the malays. but that his plan, his mentality towards the execution is blasphemous. he saw the his objectives, but he ignored the principles of justice.

he loved his race. he loved his religion. just like what michael corleone said to his daughter, "i'd burn in hell to protect you." he did that. he is a pity man. he did everything to achieve what he dreamt for his people, only to realised that he is getting further from it.

that is the only thing that is consistent about mahathir.

Of course Malaysian should rejoice, more so Sabahans.

He is the one behind project IC, to import 'loyal' supporters of certain faith from other countries (Bosnia, Pakistan, Myanmar, Cambodia, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, etc) so that his (former) UMNO can rule for a thousand years (like what Hitler thought).

He is the one about having 70 million population for Malaysia, never mind they are poor or jobless, as long as they support UMNO.

TDM listed a lot more about how he was badly treated after he left as PM, so he has personal reasons to resign from UMNO, and is free to do so.

But the reasons he gave regarding the running of UMNO deserves examination. They are:

1. “Oleh kerana Dato Seri Abdullah buta mata dan pekak telinga dan tidak faham mesej ahli BN”

If he does not respect the President and he thinks that he is better, TDM should stand against AAB for Presidency in December. Only defeatist runs away from a battle which he as member has the right to contest.

2. “oleh kerana ahli UMNO pun turut bersama, oleh kerana proses demokrasi tidak berjalan”

UMNO is as democratic or not democratic as when TDM was the President of UMNO. AAB has not changed any rule in UMNO. Only TDM massages UMNO rules to his advantage. So TDM deserves the fruits of his labour in changing UMNO rules.

3. “UMNO yang ada sekarang bukan lagi UMNO yang ditubuhkan 62 tahun dahulu”

UMNO of 1946 was declared illegal, and UMNO now is different since 1989. It has been a different organization for the past 19 years. The justification is not tenable.

4. “saya berpendapat penyertaan saya sebagai ahli UMNO tidak bermakna dan tidak berguna lagi”

That might be a more accurate statement. UMNO to TDM was a vehicle for political adventure. The structure created by Tunku allowed the President to be the PM of the country. After Tunku, the PM position has been utilized since 1980s to reward the incumbent as he chose to interpret. The supposed struggle of UMNO was meant to ensure that vote banks return the PM to power. The use of ballot boxes was continued because there was no need to change the system. That system of parliamentary democracy would have been changed if TDM considered it necessary. Obviously TDM is more creative than AAB; but his creativity serves the interests of his families, rather than the nation which was the third item of his concern for lip services.
