New Economic Agenda will not compromise rights of bumiputras, says Anwar

(The Star) - The bumiputra community is ready for change under the New Economic Agenda because it will continue to be grounded on affirmative action to help the poor and the marginalised, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said that the New Economic Agenda recognised the multi-ethnic composition of Malaysia, and therefore was “fortified with a policy to foster and nurture a plural and tolerant society”.

“The fear that such an agenda will erode the rights of the bumiputra is but the consequence of the racist chanting of some Umno leaders who will stand to be the biggest losers in the new agenda.

“Let me reiterate that the interests of the bumiputras will never be compromised because we are committed to building a new system that is just and fair. No one will be left behind on account of race or religion,” he said Tuesday in his keynote address at the CLSA Corporate Access Forum in Singapore.

In giving a snapshot of the Pakatan Rakyat’s economic blueprint should they form the Federal Government, Anwar added that “unlike the current scheme of things, the New Agenda will put in place mechanisms to ensure that economic aid goes to those who most need it.”

To detractors who had pointed out that the road to a more deregulated free market economy would lead to the abandonment of social instruments, he replied that they had no intention of abandoning electoral promises which included the promotion of social justice.

“Whenever necessary, we temper free market with an appropriate dose of state intervention to rectify the social inequities attendant on the interplay of pure market forces.

“We don’t think we need to apologise for advocating a policy on fuel, healthcare and education which is calculated to ease the burden of the rising cost of living,” he said.

“We call this humane economics.”

Anwar also said that the Pakatan Rakyat had no intention of doing away with the affirmative action principles outlined in the New Economic Policy, “but we will apply them across the board making them available for all races on a needs basis,” he said.

Yes.. Let the Malays have their enshrined special position. Those who honestly need aid and assistance - offer help. Nobody grudges that.

Just allow all other communities have open opportunities according to their merits, especially in the fields of education, civil service, employment, scholarships. Do it for the sake of the nation Malaysia.

Some communities are behind the Malays. In fact many Malays are ahead of other communities already.

You do not need to be a genius to do the sum. Malaysia is blest by God. If the wealth is properly and equitably distributed to all needy Malaysians, regardless of race, there is more than enough and most likely a lot leftover for rainydays reserve. Our problem is that certain quarters is enriching themselves by propagating this lie about NEP, and shamelessly hoarding till kingdom comes. They want to perpetuate this NEP by frightening Malays about loosing their special positions and non-Malays with bloodshed. Sudah laa, cukup laa, remember you are all going to meet your creator all the same.

Why still talking about bumi rights, when you already said no one will be left behind on account of race or religion. If some malays are poor, help them. If some chinese are poor help them. If some Indians are poor, help them. If some Melanau, Bidayuh, kadazan, Ibans are poor, help them.

If DSAI and his colleagues can turn Malaysia into a better place to work, live and do business through positive and progressive policies to improve health care, education, good governance, corruption free, transparency in government and above all social justice and equality of all Malaysians regardless of race, religion, class or creed, I am sure we will see a reverse "brain drain" of many Malaysians who had left the country as a result of the NEP.

God Bless Malaysia

Simple comparison of Malaysia to Singapore

Malaysia
Big land , rich natural resources, abundance of agricultural produce, bright people willing to work and excel but no opportunity .
Bad politicians holding the office with NEP , many quotas and cronies, happily forcing brain drain to its neighbours.
Poor country rating in many aspects , few foreign investment, sliding backwards compare to neighbours.

Singapore
Miniature land, no natural resources,no agriculturall produce, bright people willing to excel, abundance of opportunities base on merit.
Good politicians and leaders ,no NEP, transparent, and happily receive brain drains from Malaysia.
Top rating in all aspects, overflowing foreign investments, beat all its neighbours flat economically.

See the above difference ??? Go figure how off-track into the mud has Malaysia been the last 50 years !!!!!

Dear DSAI - I am sure you can cause the change to Malaysia.
I think we can grow together with Singapore, mutual win-win to make this part of the world a world-class and respectable destination for anyone, investors, tourist, etc and most of all, a land where its people and the country have hearts for each other .

Aiyo kadavaleh (oh God), please help. These are the promises of a politician; paham ka? Pikir la sikit. This guy was part of the problem, until he got kicked out. Now he presents himself as a saviour, deliverance.

While BN/Umno self-destructs (no help needed here thank you, what with Baduawi, Najis, Kerismuddin, Kokok Jangut), Mamamktir crying rivers, ni la masa-nya but promises, janji2; promise heaven and earth. DSAI tu siapa, politico pandai main politik la; Mamaktir punya mentee ni. Same guy destroyed BM, 16 years main2 di BN la. What has he done for Malaysia in his 16 years?

Malaysia for Malaysians; forget the race card, meh. 50 tahun masih main race ka? I pity you Malaysia present and future. Go for merit la; this is the best way.

It is a ploy to get in. DSAI and his words hard to belive. Dont believe everything you hear, and belive only half of what you see. The first person who stands on merit wins my endorsement. But I cannot see anyone fitting this description, can you?

Half of the Umno MPs, led by Badawi, should get
together with PR and form the Federal Government.

SamBall,

Sometimes people do change as they grow older and wiser. And especially when they are put into situations where they can see and experience for themselves how others feel.

Let's not prejudge anyone. At least it's the "Devil that we know than the Devil we don't know" so to say. Let give them a change to prove themselves. Do we have better alternatives?? Only time will tell.

We now have a Prime Minister in waiting who talk sense and understand the responsibility of the job of a leader. He promises to help those in need and not those of his own kind.A simple ideology which is universally acceptable but never practise in Malaysia due to greed, hatred and ignorance of our leader.

Chinese in general do not believe in handouts or getting special treatment. We only asked for equal treatment in economic and social standing. Working hard and be a good citizen, yes, thats been the norm since our forefather`s time and we are proud to be Malaysian. I believe this also apply to other races too.
