Mahathir wants BN MPs to become independents PDF Print E-mail

(The Malaysian Insider) - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has two immediate political goals – to force the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and prevent Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the PM.

Today he disclosed his plan to achieve both objectives by urging Barisan Nasional MPs to quit the coalition, become independents and force the collapse of the Abdullah administration.

This suggestion comes at a time when some BN MPs are feeling insecure over their future in an increasingly uncertain political climate, and talk of crossovers continues to cast a shadow over Parliament.

Dr Mahathir, who resigned from Umno on Monday, attempted to mine this sense of insecurity by pointing out that if 35 BN cross over to the Opposition as speculated, the BN government will fall and the Pakatan Rakyat will form the new government. He said that crossing over to Pakatan Rakyat will not help BN MPs.

"What will happen to the BN elected representatives who cross over? They will not become the prime minister because surely a Pakatan leader will be the PM. Pakatan members will also want to become ministers and deputy ministers. How many places will be kept for BN members who cross over. Definitely not everyone will get positions," he said in a posting on his blog.

But if BN MPs leave the coalition and do not join the Opposition, they will have more options, he said. These MPs will be free to support or reject government legislation or policies or motions by the Opposition.

If this switch of allegiance leaves the backbenchers without a majority, the Abdullah Badawi-led government will fall, he noted.

"The new government can only be set up if agreed to by all BN MPs who have left the coalition because they have the power to decide whether BN or Pakatan can be the majority in Parliament...If BN replaces Datuk Seri Abdullah with someone brave, the group which has left BN can them support the BN and the BN can form the government again.

"This is one way to force Datuk Seri Abdullah to resign. After this, all BN MPs can return to their parties," he said.

His suggestion is unlikely to gain traction among the 140 BN MPs for a simple reason: there are too many ifs in the equation. For ruling coalition MPs, there is more certainty crossing over to the Pakatan Rakyat than moving into unfamiliar territory and becoming independents.

Anwar has promised several Sabah MPs including Datuk Anifah Aman senior positions in the new government. For these politicians, the game plan is to revive a Sabah political party and then join the Pakatan Rakyat. There will be little stigma attached to crossing over because they will argue that they are switching allegiance to safeguard Sabah’s interest.

Anwar has said that by Sept 16, the Pakatan Rakyat will form the new government – a scenario that sends chill up the spine of Dr Mahathir and some of his supporters. The de facto Opposition leader has said all along that Dr Mahathir with the help of some politicians and businessmen fabricated corruption and sodomy charges against him.

The former prime minister believes that the man who he sacked and jailed in 1998 will come after him with vengeance if he captures the top political office in the country.

Dr Mahathir’s strategy also presupposes that Abdullah and the BN government will meet the prospect of MPs becoming independents with inertia. The Malaysian Insider understands that the BN governnment is open to the idea of calling fresh elections if the political situation becomes unstable. And any move by a group of BN MPs to resign from their component parties and become independents will be the trigger point for the dissolution of Parliament.

Hear! Hear! Old man. You time is up. You chose them to be your successor, now you want them out. What are you? God?

Racial card lost its shine, now you throw tantrums. Look everyone is not listening to you, even your own son.

Nature will take its course, for good or for bad, with or without you. So, enjoy the moments of live you have while it still lasts.

Mahathir does not have to leave the party to oust Abdullah. The people will gladly do it.

I find all these schemes very disturbing. What we need is a smooth transition, whether the present PM is replaced or a new party takes over the government - for the sake of our fragile economy and the general climate of Malaysia.

The trouble with Mahatir is that he is always thinking of he being the indispensable man of fame in this Nation who is ever 'influential' in the Country! He must wake up from his coma and begin to realize that he too is a normal man who also committed sins in the course of his life, particularly when he was in the Administration, he did commit sins of various kinds and corruption became wide spread when during his reign of powers! Many people had been deprived of their rights and were cursing him like evil! After all, he is not a perfect man either and many of his criticism against AAB were baseless and nuisance for as long as many decent nationals are concerned!

It's high time he keeps his silence and muster as much dignity he has left before he is accused and doomed to fall in grace at his old age! It will be a blot not only on his reputation but forever blemishes in the book of Malaysian history!......................

The people of Malaysia elected the MPs and not mahatir. What does he think he is? Od donkey or old monkey? If malaysians want Pak Lah, what is his problem? If malaysians want Anwar, he has a problem. Anwar has got old score to settle with him and why should malaysians sacrifice for this old tyrant? He can go fly kite and who cares. If he is afraid that Anwar may seek vengeance against him, he should disappear from malaysia and go hide in Israel and he is safe because malaysia and Israel have no diplomatic relationship. Look at his nose, which so resemble the jews.

Its now or never. Sabah MPs must make the move to cross over to Pakatan now.

reason: if Mahathir has his way, the New BN government under Mahathir control will have to reward his "royalist" who are also "rich" from his good deed years back. These guys can help buy votes. So, knowing Mahathir's iron fist rule, slim hope for Sabah MPs to gain support from His New Cabinet, put aside More Minister posts.

Clever chap - effective approach to dilute the lock in umno. Now he will likely bait them by pumping fear into the umno MPs futures.

For the UMNO MPs, question is which option is most appealing, likely to accomplish the objective, and less risk to recapture their power and influence and stranglehold - all politicians self-serve first (its a DNA thing).

The unsettling part is the politicians are still dancing to the tunes of other politicians - and not the rakyats. Somehow need to get the umno politicians to fear the rakyat, not their political leaders.

At least Marcos, Suharto and his other infamous friends outlawed criticism of themselves outright. Maha Thiruden is a tyrant who has has commited unquestioned sedition by destroying democracy here. The MPs should show independence by asking for him to be locked up without parole.

Since Mahathir's retirement (maybe also throughout his life), he only seems to be interested in the welfare (or destruction?) of the Malays. Didnt he introduce the term "Bangsa Malaysia". Just shows that he is a leader of only one race. I thought he was more than that. I think i was wrong. He seems to be interested only on himself, Umno, and BN.

This story makes UMNO look like a prostitution rings. You stay for satisfaction and sin, and leave to look for others if given better "positions" when you are not served properly. Once the positions improves you can come back in again. Wow!!! ABB you guys need to satisfy these pimps with better positions, if you know what I mean.

Wow, this TDM is going all out to achieve his personal vendetta. His objective seem to destroy AAB at all cost irrespespective of what damage it will do to the country.

This need to annihilate AAB has become an obsession to TDM.

Yes, as I see it , he will cut the nose to spite the face eventhought it will destroy the look.

Since Abdullah Ahmad Badawi hold president post "silent sindrome" was the priority practice among MP's. MP's just "yes Mr President" to get attention and blessed. Some MP's lost vocal which might lack of intelectual ability to give and dilever critical, analytical suggestion, opionion, critics and etc. MP's behaviour like such "puppet" of circuss.
