OPPOSITION MPs trained their guns on Tourism Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said yesterday over the termination of the memorandums of understanding on tourism in the five Pakatan Rakyat-ruled states.

Datuk Seri Azalina Othman (left) says she had replied to queries from the opposition, while M. Kulasegaran says Azalina did not provide proper explanation. Azmin Ali (right) says Azalina's answers did not address the issue at hand.
Datuk Seri Azalina Othman (left) says she had replied to queries from the opposition, while M. Kulasegaran says Azalina did not provide proper explanation. Azmin Ali (right) says Azalina's answers did not address the issue at hand.

But despite the onslaught, she proved her mettle by not giving way to M. Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat) or Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak) who led the charge.

The mercury rose during her winding-up on points raised by MPs on the motion of thanks to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for his Royal Address.

Azalina began by saying that the MoU were terminated because of differences in policy approach and implementation of tourism programmes between the federal government and the five respective state governments.

She added that the Kelantan government had not paid the salary of three tourism officials following the completion of a tourism programme in the state.

This led to howls of protests from opposition MPs, who also disagreed with her statement that the BN government did not practise discrimination nor end tourism programmes which were beneficial.

She said the federal government also did not stop state officers from carrying out their duties.

"We did not do like what Perak did," she said, which raised the hackles of opposition MPs who jumped to their feet to castigate her for the remark.

There were a few moments of utter confusion as Deputy Speaker Datuk Ronald Kiandee tried to placate opposition MPs who wanted to speak.

"Please Yang Berhormat, sit down. The minister does not want to give way," he said.

A defiant Azalina added that she had replied to queries from the opposition on the matter.

To this, Kulasegaran cited a point of order that she could not have replied as she had been reading from a prepared text.

"That does not go against the standing order," said a flustered Kiandee.

Kulasegaran, however, did not give in, adding that Azalina also did not properly explain the reasons behind the termination of the MoU.

"She only did not give way ... that is her right (not to explain)," Kiandee said.

At this juncture, Datuk Wan Rahim Wan Abdullah (Pas-Kota Baru) joined the fray by demanding an explanation from Azalina over her earlier reply that Kelantan did not pay the officers for three months.

"There is no such thing. Please explain," he said.

Azalina said officials from her ministry had told her about the matter.

As Wan Rahim sought further clarification, Kiandee said Azalina was not bound by the standing order to reply to the Pas MP.

At this point, Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak) rose to file a motion to refer Azalina to the Rights and Privileges Committee for allegedly misleading the house with her answer on the termination of the MoU.

He said Azalina's answer on the issue did not address the reasons behind the decision to cancel tourism promotion and campaigns in the five states.

"The programmes are not listed in the calendar of events and the website of the ministry," he said.

Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur) seconded Azmin's motion.

Kiandee, however, said there was no need to refer Azalina to the committee.

Datuk Sirigan Gubat (BN-Ranau) stood up to defend Azalina, saying that standing order 43 of the Dewan Rakyat stated that the speaker's decision was final in the matter.

Kiandee then overruled Lim's and N. Gobalakrishnan's (PKR-Padang Serai) objections that MPs had the final say on the motion and ordered proceedings to continue.

HELLO. You people are given the 'Yang Berkhidmat' title to serve the interest of the people, not your own. So stop being selfish and do what's best for the country. We voted you in for that.

Darkness fear the light. Darkness withdraws where line shines. So too evil fears the good.

Azalina has had some 2 months to prepare for this question. The word was out early when she did what she did. Yet 2 months on .... she has nothing valid to offer as an explanation ... just running away as darkness runs away from the light.

This is another product of UMNO's scholarship for non-scholars program

UMNO is so spiteful to the point of having their heads up their ass or any other tunnel in the lower end of their body!

I happen to have an Indian friend who wants to visit Malaysia with his entire family for the first time - I am already reluctant to assist them until the Hindraf ISA guys are out of the cage for fear of putting the country in poor light AND now this idiotic tourism woman with the BRAIN of a SLUG and the SPINE of a WORM and the conscience of a SNAKE would flush the future of our country down the toilet for petty internal squabbles!

Look - you are depriving international tourists the full flavor of Malaysia - they may not come back - you have only one chance to impress these people and have them come back in the future - cutting out 5 states that are well known only proves to all Malaysians that we need to boot you little pea brained mat rempits out quickly. For you personally - when PR takes over or the KuLi UMNOS takes over - May God punish you with 2 dozen children to suck you dry and a job as a toilet cleaner in Sungei Wang!

Wah, unpaid salary also can bising until parliamentary level ah? Wow... Or does she perhaps mean unpaid "other-monies"?

Hey Azalina, don't forget that the rakyat is your boss, not Pak Lah. If you don't do it properly, you know what's coming in 4 years, right?

The general attitudes of ministers in Malaysia are despicable whenever they are required to reply questions. I find them too evasive and bias Devan Speakers make things more undemocratic.

It is MP's rights on behalf the Malaysian public to seek explanation on matters relating national developments. A responsible minister is ought to explain to Devan in details and if time is a factor and a written reply will have to be followed. I wonder if Parliament were to accept answers without explanation as we are witnessing now, then the MPs and ministers must not be addressed "Yang Berhormat", instead they should be addressed "Yang Berdungus".

ARE WE INTERESTED IN YANG BERDUNGUS?

She cut the 5 states off out of spite that Umno (and BN) did not win. So she says to the rakyat of those states, you don't want us there you don't get our service. But she forgot that when she withdrew the MOUs, she was dealing with the taxpayer's money and these 5 states are part of that taxpayer. And she as gormen, must act as gormen and not as BN or Umno rep. Now she trapped herself and cannot answer. The only way out for her is to resign as minister.

VISIT BN YEAR 2008? A very simple solution.

Tourism promotion should be handed back to the states. The budgets can either be disbursed equally to the states, or taxpayers from each state have a % of their tax dollars paid to the STATE TOURISM BOARD.

Then we can disband Tourism Malaysia. You take away Penang, Langkawi, Pulau Perhentian, Pangkor, Everything in K.L. and Selangor (incl. F1). Then there is bugger all to promote - so give us back the tax dollars.

Mr. Azalina, you stand for everything wrong about BN and it's narrow minded childish policies. If there was ever an advertisement for how handouts stupefy people. SHE IS A CLASSIC CASE.
